To all whom. it may concern:

Be it known that l. Lonseo'r'r Montana, a citizen of the United States, and resident of \Vatertown, in the county of Jefferson and State of Wisconsin. have invented certain new: and useful Improvements in BoxFasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

Mv invention consists in what is herein particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims of this specification, ts ObIIQtL lKI- ing to provide sim le, economical, efhoient and durable boxastcners especially designed for returnable shipping-boxes havin hinged covers.

l ig'ure 1 of the drawings represents a front elevation of one of my improved boxfasteners partly broken away, together with a fragment of a sealing-strip applied thereto, and Fig. 2, a sectional view indicated by line 2-2 in Fig. 1.

Referring by numerals to the drawings, 8 indicates a plate attachable to the top of the lid of a box to roject somewhat from the adjacent edge 0% the same. The other, thick end of the latch has a slot 15 therein registrable with the slot 12 in the plate-lug ll when said latch is in its normal vertical position abutting the stop-flange 13 of said lug. The light end of the latch 14 opposes the hasp (i caught in engagement with the flanges 8 ol the plate 9, to fasten the box-lid in closed position and said latch is fastened in this position by a metallic-seal wire or strip l(' engaging the registering slots 12 and 15 aforesaid.

To release the hasp 3, the latch H is swung on its pivot to have its light end clear said hasp, the movement of its heavy end being away from the stop-flange of the late-lug 11. After a disengagement oi the iasp 6 from the catch-plate Ehthe latch is permitted to return to normal position where it remains back of said hasp that is from time to time reiinguged with said catch-plate while the box is in use. To again fasten the box lid in closed position, the latch 14 is swung out of its normal position to permit of the hasp 6 falling full back in the notch between the ilanges 8 ol the catch-plate 9, and said latch being freed it returns to normal position forward of said has to hold the same.in its engagement wit said catch-plate.

I claim:

1. A fastener comprising a plate-member attachable to the lid of a box to project at one end therefrom, another plate-member attachable to the front of the box-body and having a recessed upper outer ilange, a hasp-member having its upper end in swinging connection with the outer end of the box-lid plate-member and which is engageable with the recess of the flange of the boxbody plate-member to extend under said flange, and a hasp-fncing gravity latch-membcr in pivotal connection with said box-body plate member.

A fastener comprising a plate-member attachable to the lid of a box to project at one end therefrom, a hasp-melnber hung in connection with the outer end of said platemembcr and having the longitudinal ed es thereof angularly notched adjacent to its lower end,another plate-member attachable to the front of the box-body and having an upper outer flange provided with a recess withwhich the narrow portion of the husp membcr between its notches is engageable,

and a hasp-facing gravity latch-member in pivotal connection with the box-body platememher. I

3. A fastener comprising a plate-mem- L) her attachable to the lid of a box to project at one end therefrom, another late-member attachable to the front of-the ox-body and having a recessed upper outer flange and a depending lug provi ed with an outer stop- 10 flange; ahasp-member having its upper end in swingin connection with the outer end of the box-l d plate-member and which is engageable with the recess of the flange of the box-body plate-member to extend under said 1 flange, anc ahasp-faeing gravity latch-memher in pivotal connection with said box-body plate member, said stop-flan e serving to limit swing of the latch-mem er in one direction.
