M. A. HAWKINS. BOX FOR, PLAYER PIANO MUSIC ROLLS.
-APPLiCATl0N FILED AY24 1,309,030. I I PatentedJuly ,191
MASON ALBERT HAWKINS, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
BOX FOR PLAYER-PIANO MUSIC-ROLLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 8, 1919.
Application filed May 24, 1917. Serial No. 170,732.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MASON A. HAWKINS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boxes for Player-Piano Music-Rolls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to music roll holding receptacles, and has for its primary object to provide a simple and effective means, applicable to containers for music rolls and the like, whereby the contents of the container may be moved slightly forward upon the opening of the container, and thus enable the person, desiring to remove the contents, to easily and effectively grasp the object which is to be removed.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device which will facilitate the removing of the contents, but on the other hand will not serve as a hindrance when the object which has been removed is desired to be replaced within its container.
A further object of my invention is to provide a novel means for facilitating the removal of the contents of a container of the class described, and which will be effective and reliable in its operation, and of such a character which will not necessitate a departure from the conventional form of container in order to render it applicable and efl'ective when used for the purpose as described.
The above and other objects and advantages of my invention will fully appear from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the particular features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claims. I wish it understood, however, that this disclosure is illustrative only, and that the principles of my invention can be embodied in construction other than the one specified herein.
In the drawings in which similar characters of reference denote similar parts in the several views.
Figure 1 represents the preferred form of my invention, shown in perspective and applied to a music roll container,
Fig. 2 is a modified form shown in perspective, of my preferred form and applied to a music roll container, and
Fig. 3 represents another modified form,
shown in perspective, ofmy preferred form and applied to a music roll container,
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents the main body portion of a music roll holder to which is securely attached a binding 2, preferably of metal, by any suitable and desired means. It is to be understood that the main body, as indicated by the numeral 1, need not necessarily be of the particular shape that I have shown in my disclosure, but it may be of any desired shape or form, as for instance oblong, triangular, round, or otherwise. To the metal binding 2, is hingedly attached a closure 3 which is held by means of a hinge 4 to the metal binding 2.
The closure 3, when in a closed position, with respect to the music roll container, is
adapted to fit closely to the edges 5 of the metal binding 2 in order to prevent dust, moisture, or any other undesirable foreign matter from entering the container 1, and thereby deteriorating the quality of the'contents retained within the container. In order to facilitate the removal ofthe music roll, or other article contained within the container, an L-shaped member 6 is securely attached to the inner portion of the closure 3 and held imposition by means of rivets 7 and 7 passed through the foot 8 of the L-shaped member 6 and the closure 3.
At the free end of the L-shaped member 6 there is provided a catch 9 formed integral with the L-shaped member 6 by turning down a strip carried by its longitudinal edge and at right angles to it. The catch 9 is provided at its lower end with a downturned portion to form a hook 10 which serves to engage the shoulder 11 of the music roll 12 when the closure 3 is in the act of being opened as illustrated in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a modified form of my invention in which I have embodied the same principles shown in my preferred form indicated by Fig. 1. I have in Fig. 2 shown a closure 13 attached directly to the main body 14 of the music roll container by a hinge of any desired and suitable design. In this form I prefer to construct my closure 13 of the same material, preferably fibrous material, as that which I employ in the main body 14 of the container. The closure 13 is provided with flanges 15 formed by turning down a portion of the main body of the closure 13. The flanges 15 are adapted to fit closely within the end of the receptacle 14 when the closure 13 has been moved to a closed position with respect to the container 14. To the flange 15 is secured a catch 16 which performs substantially the same function as the catch employed in my preferred form and indicated by the numeral 6 in Fig. 1.
The catch 16, although performing the same function as the catch 6 in Fig. 1, is of a modified design and adapted to be secured to the flange 15 of the closure 13.
In Fig. 3, I have shown another modified form of my invention which is adapted to be used in connection with the same detailed construct-ion of the container and closure as illustrated in Fig. 2. I have, in this infstance, shown another modified form of catch, as illustrated by 17, which is adapted to be secured to the main portion 13 of the closure rather than to the flange 15' and in the same manner as is illustrated in Fig. 2.
It is to be understood that the operation of my device, shown in Figs. 2 and 3, is substantially the same as that of Fig. 1 which is as follows:
IVhen it is desired to remove a roll, the closure 3 is opened. By this operation, the hook 10 carried by the catch 6, is brought into engagement with shoulder 11 of the spool 12, this spool 12 is thereby moved forwardly to such a position as will readily permit it to be grasped and removed from within its container.
The operation of my device as shown in Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 7 is as follows:
Vhen it is desired by one to remove a roll, tllBClOS'LllB 18 is removed from the end of the receptacle 19, and'moved outwardly.
as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. In moving the closure outwardly the elongated member 21, carrying the hook 25, is moved longitudinally between the portions 21 and 22, thereby bringing the hook 25 into contact with the end of the roll, as illustrated in Fig. 5, whereupon the roll is moved a suflicient distance out of the container to enable one to readily grasp and completely remove the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described comprising an elongated music roll receptacle having an open end, a closure hingedly secured to said receptacle at the open end thereof, and a catch secured to the inner side of said closure, said catch being adapted to move into engagement with the music roll to move the same forward upon the opening of said closure.
2. In a device of the character described comprising an elongated music roll receptacle having an open end, a metal binding secured to said receptacle at its open end, a closure hingedly secured to said metal binding, and an L shaped member secured to the inner side of said closure, a. catch provided with a hook secured to the free end of the L shaped member, said hook being adapted to move into engagement with the music roll to move the same forward upon the opening of said closure.
MASON ALBERT HAWKINS.
