COMBINED PICTURE-FRAME AND MATCH SAFE OR RECEPTACLE.

Be it known that I, JOSEPH VICTOR CHRISTL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Picture-Frame and Match Safe or Receptacle; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The objects of this invention are to provide a match box or safe having a concealed picture frame or receptacle which will have therein, more perfectly concealed, the said framepto avoid the use of joints,which tend to indicate the presence of the picture, said joints being otherwise objectionable in that they mar the appearance of the case; to reduce the 'cost of construction; to enable the picture to be viewed with ease, and'to secure other advantages and results, some of which may be referred to hereinafter in connection "with the description of the working parts The invention consists in the improved picture-frame and match-receptacle and in the arrangements and combinations of parts thereof, all substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embraced in the clauses of the claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved match receptacle and picture frame combined. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same,taken on line 00. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line y, and Figs. 4: and 5 are respectively a detail elevation and edge view or plan of the sliding picture-frame adapted to be concealed within the box.

In said drawings, a indicates the body of the box, and 1) indicates a hinged cover thereof. Said box is formed of sheet metal, the body being devoid of open joints, any seams formed therein being completely closed with solder or otherwise, so as not to be apparent At the upper open end of the box the same is provided with a flange a, which is set back a little, so as to form a seat at the base to receive the lower edge of the cover, so that said flange will enter said cover and prevent any lateral play thereof when said cover is closed. At one side of the said box this flange is cut partly away, as indicated in Fig. 1, and in line with the ends of said flange is arranged the upper edge of a picture-frame c, the body of which frame 0 lies closely against the inside of said box in suitable slideways d d, Fig. 3, which permit said picture-frame to slide vertically within said box out from the open end thereof, as indicated in Fig. 1. Suitable stops are provided, as at e, Fig. 2, to limit the inward movement of the frame and hold the upper edge thereof as nearly as possible in line with the upper edge of the flange a", so that the said upper edge of the pictureframe supplements the said flange and serves as a complement thereto. Thus when the cover of the box is open the top of the picture-frame, whileappearing to view, simply appears to be a portion of the said flange and is hardly observable or distinguishable as an independent part.

The upper or outward movements of the picture-frame are also limited by stops f, Figs. 1 and 2. These serve, in connection with cooperating stops f at the lower end of 'said picture-frame, to prevent the complete withdrawal of the picture-frame from the case. WVhen drawn to its outward position, said frame will be held, as indicated in outline in Fig. 1, so that the picture therein will be plainly in View. When the frame is pressed down to its lower limit, the upper edge coincides with and gives'continuity to the tongue, which enters the hollow of the cover I) when the latter is closed down.

The upper end of the picture-frame is provided with a thumb-nail slot g, serving to facilitate the withdrawal of the said pictureframe. The said picture-frame is held in its withdrawn position by the frictional contact of the slideways. The said picture-frame is centrally open and provided, a little back from the edge of the opening, with a bezel 77, of a width sufficient to form a receptacle for a transparent face-plate and the picture or photograph to be held in said frame. Said bezel may be cut at its projecting edge, as shown in Figs. and 5, to form tongues i '2", adapted to be bent against the back of the picture or photograph to hold the same within the frame. The picture-frame beingforced inward within the match-receptacle, the cover I) may be turned down and over the projecting edge of the picture-frame and held by a suitable spring j at the hinge or by a catch, and thus said picture-frame is suiliciently and entirely concealed from view, and I dispense with the use of outside joints, as above indicated.

llaving thus described the invention, what I claim as new is- 1. The improved picture-frame and match box or receptacle, comprising the box-body open at one end, and provided at said open end with a hinged cover, said body having formed on the inside thereof slideways and stops, a picture-frame arranged within said box-body on said slideways and limited in its sliding movement by said stops, the upper edge of said frame extending to the upper edge of the box-body at the open end and thereat provided with a nail-slot, and the center of said frame being open to receive a picture, substantially as set forth 2. The combination with the body portion of a match-safe, open at one end and having interiorslideways and ahinge-cover to cover said end opening, of a sliding picture-frame arranged within said body and adapted to be withdrawn when the cover is open, the said picture-frame being centrally open and rovided with a bezel to receive the picture and hold the picture against the inside of the body portion, where the pictured surface will not be injured by the matches, substantially as set forth.
