Description
J. M. DE VQE HAIL BOX Fil ed Feb 6, 1925' INVLNTO? WITNESS Patented Aug. 24, 1926.
UNITED STATES JOSEPH M. DE VOE, or LIMA,.0HIO.
MAIL BOX.
Application filed February 6, 1925.
The object of my said invention is the provision of a mail box that is, at once, simple and inexpensive in construction, neat in appearance, convenient in use, and possessed of the capacity of containing a considerable number of letters as well as holding newspapers and the like.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a front elevation of the box constituting the preferred embodiment of my invention as the same appears when closed.
Figure 2 is a side elevation showing by full lines the box in closed state, and by dotted lines the position in which the inner box section is placed for the removal of mail matter from the box.
Figure 3 is a horizontalsection taken in the plane indicated by the line 33 of Figure 2. I
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail vertical section of a part hereinafter explicitly referred to.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
Among other elements my novel box which is preferably formed of metal comprises an outer box section 1, adapted to befastened to a house front or to any other appropriatesupport, and open at its upper end designated by 2 and also open at its front as designated by 3. The said outer section 1 is provided with a bottom wall 1.
In addition to the outer box section 1 the improved box includes an inner box section 5 hinged at 6 to the outer box section 1. The inner section 5 is provided interiorly at a point near the lower end of its front'wall 7 with a projection 4*, designed when the in ner section 5 is in closed position to occupy the position illustrated relative to the outer section 1.
The projection 42 is designed to fit snugly against the bottom wall 1, Figure 4, and thereby prevent letters slipping between the wall 7 and the forward edge of the wall 1-.
On the upper end of the outer section 1 is hinged at S a lid 9 which overhangs the in:
Serial No. 7,364.
I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to this latter provision inasmuch as in the discretion of the manufacturer the holder alluded to may be either employed or altogether omitted without involving departure from the scope of my invention. I
The pintles for the hinge connection at 6 of the inner section 5 to the outer section 1 are formed by terminals 12 on a bail 13 deadapted to be quickly moved to the dotted line position in Figure 2 for the convenient removal of the box contents, and it will also be noted that the said inner Section 5 may be readily restored to the position it occupies normally with respect to the outer section'l. It will further be observed that while compact in construction, the box is possessed of large capacity for the secure holding of letters as well as the secure holding of papers and magazines. 7
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said-embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as conlining myself to the specific construction and relative arrangement of parts inasmuch as in the future practice of the invention various changes and modifications may be made such as fall within the scope of my invention as defined in my appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent,
the outer section, a lid. hingedly connected to said outer section with its outer edge extending beyond the frontwall of the inner section, and a bail for holding newspapers and magazines to the box,.said bail having terminal portions hingedly connecting the inner section to the outer section andalso having pendent loops and a front upwardly extending loop, the inner section being-provided with a stop on the inner side of the lower portion of its front wall designed to friotionally engage over the bottom wall of the outer section to close the opening be tween said wall and the lower portion of the front wall of the inner section.
, In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JOSEPH M. DE VOE.
