Filed Jan. 2l, 1938 Patented May 1o, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE RECEPTACLE` WITH PICTURE DISPLAY `Application January 21, 1938, Serial No. 186,211
9 Claims.
The invention relates to receptacles generally, but may be particularly `adapted to compacts, cigarette cases, l combinationV cigarette case, lighter and compact, and other receptacles for personal use especially such as are adapted to be carried on the person in a pocket or a bag.
It is a purpose of the present invention to provide in such a receptacle a frame or locket-like device in which may be displayed a picture or insignia or the like. In one form the invention may take it is possible to display two pictures, insignia or the like, one of which is visible from the outside when the receptacle is closed and the other is visible from the inside when the receptacle is open. The frame or locket may be hinged so as to be adjustable or movable in the receptacle member to which it is attached. Means may be provided for removing and replacing the conte-nts of the locket so that different pictures 2O or insignia may be substituted from Atime to time or when desirable. Preferably meansv are provided to hold the locket in position for display. The locket may be associated with a frame or collar into which it ts more or less neatly and which may assist in holding in position the portion of the locket which may be removed for changing the material to be displayed.
In such a receptacle it may be `convenient to put the frame or locket-like device into one member of the receptacle so as to be accessible and visible from the outside. It is immaterial which member of the receptacle is so used but for purposes of illustration and description the frame is illustrated as attached to the cover of the receptacle. The term cover, however, is not employed in a limiting sense. It is to be understood that as here used the term cover is merely used as a convenient means for describing one member of a receptacle and may signify any member of a receptacle to which the frame or locket is applied.
In the accompanying drawing is illustrated one specific embodiment of the invention. Figure 1 is a top plan view of a closed receptacle provided with the new picture display frame. Fig. 2 is a plan view similar to Fig. 1 with the cover opened. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 dotted lines being employed to indicate a position to which the frame may be moved. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary vertical section on the line 5--5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary transverse horizontal section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2, the frame or locket being shown empty. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the portion of the frame or locket which `may be removed to allow access to the interior of the frame.
The particular structure illustrated in the drawing is a compact having a base or bottom l5 of standard construction. Hinged to this is the other member of the receptacle which will hereinafter be referred to as the cover li. The cover li may carry a mirror l2 which may be held in place by a lining member i3 which has an appropriate aperture for the mirror i2. The cover i! has appropriately located an opening ld which may be provided with an ornamental or reinforcing border l5. In the lining i3 is an opening IB registering with the opening hi in the cover H. Surrounding the opening i5 is a raised collar il.
The collar il is provided with a hinge mechanism I8 carrying a frame E9 which may be substantially the same size as the holes Ul and The frame i9 is preferably so carried that I5. one surface will, in closed position, be at substantially the level of the border i5. When the frame IG is in closed position indicated in full lines throughout the drawing it lies within the L collar l1. At its side opposite` the hinge i8 the frame I4 may be provided with a suitable catch mechanism indicated as overturned lugs 2E to engage upset portions 2l in the collar l'l to hold the frame in position in the collar. The frame I9 has apertured face members 22 and 23 through which may be display-ed pictures, insignia or the like 24 and 25 when the frame is filled. Underlying the face members 22 and 23 may be sheets of suitable transparent material 26 and 2l such as glass, cellulcid, cellotex, etc., against which may lie pictures, insignia or the like 24 and 25. A filling block 23 may be inserted between these so as to hold the material to be displayed against the transparent plates 2S, 21 or against the face members 22 and 23 if the transparent plates are omitted. Preferably the top, bottom and one side of the frame I9 will be integral with the face members 22 and 23, being stamped or welded or soldered or otherwise attached thereto. This leaves one side of the frame open and when the frame is turned on its hinge 18 to the position indicated in dotted lines in Figs. 3 and 4 the contents of the frame I9 may be supplied, removed or changed.
In order to hold the contents in the frame i9 there may be provided a U-shaped member 29 to iill the open side of the frame I9. The arms 30 and 3l of the U-shaped member 2S when in position lie closely against the top and bottom members of the frame I9. The arms 39 and 3! may be provided with lugs 32 to engage corresponding openings 33 in the top and bottom members of the frame I9 so as to open the locket or hold the member 29 in position. It will be noted that the member 29 will lie more or less snugly against one side of the collar I1 when the frame I9 is in the position indicated in full lines in the drawing. Thus the member 29 will tend to be held in position by the collar Il.
When desired the face member 22 may have an outwardly extending lip 34 to rest against the edge of the collar I'I and form a neat cover for th'e closure. rIhe member 29 when in position may lie under and closely engage the edges of the face members 22 and 23. When the frame member I9 is in the position indicated in dotted lines any suitable mechanism such as an awl, needle or the like may be inserted through the hole 33 to engage the lugs 32 or the arms 3D or 3| and force the member 29 outward. When it has been forced beyond the edge of the face plate 23 the member 29 itself may be engaged by the finger or by any suitable tool and thus withdrawn from the frame member I9 to allow insertion, rearrangement or substitution of the contents of the frame member I9.
While pictures 24 and 25 have been illustrated as suitable display contents for the frame I9 any desired material may be thus displayed and either or both sides may be left blank without any display material or may contain material which augments, contrasts with or harmonizes with the surface ornamentation of the receptacle or of the lining.
The invention may be embodied in other forms which may vary in detail, construction, arrangement and location from the specific embodiment illustrated.
I claim as my invention:
l. In a receptacle a cover having a hole therein, a lining for the cover having a hole registering with the hole in the cover, a collar about the hole in the lining, a frame open at one side and provided with display openings at its front and back and registering with the holes, a hinge connection between the collar and the frame, means on the frame engaging the collar to hold the frame in the collar, a U-shaped member closing the open side of the frame with the arms of the U extending into the frame, and means on the arms of the U-shaped member to engage the frame and hold it in place.
tering with the hole in the cover, a collar about the holel in the lining, a frame registering with the holes and a hinge connection between the collar and the frame.
