UNrrnn Sra'rns n'rnnr OFFICE.
ARTHUR WILLIAM VAN-DEMARK, OF LESTERSIIIRE, NEV YORK.
cLoTHlEsf-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part'of Letters Patent NO.,707,880,'datedAugust 26, '1902. Application filed April 16, 1902. Serial No. 103,128. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ wiz/ont it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR WILLIAM VAN DEMARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lestershire, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes- Hangers, of which the following is a full and complete speciiication, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The obj ect of this invention is to provide an improved hanger or hook for suspending clothes therefrom and which is adapted to be secured to any suitable support in a closet orV wardrobe or wherever such a device is necessary and which will serve as a hanger for coats, hats, and other garments and for umbrellas and other articles.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Y Figure l is a front view of my improved hook or hanger and the supports thereof; Fig. 2, a sectional side View thereof; and Fig. 3, a plan view, part of the hook or hanger being in section.
In the drawings forming part of this speciiication I have shown at a a supportwhich may be secured in af closet or wardrobe or to a wall or any other support, and said support a may consist of a wall or of the side or back of a closet or wardrobe, and in the` practice of my invention I provide twokeepers, in the present instance consisting of hook-screws h, which are adapted to be screwed into the su pport a and on which is mounted a platespring c, the central portion of which is curved outwardly. I also provide a rod d, which is adapted to be passed intothe heads of the hook-screwsb, and the rod d is provided at its upper and lower ends with hooks d and d2, respectively. The. hook cl3- is projected forward farther than the lower hook d2.
It will be observed that the spring c, which bears on the rod d, holds said rod in the head of the hook-screws h, and in passing said rod into the head of said hook-screws the spring is forced backwardly, and this operation is repeated whenever it is desired to detach the rod d from the head of hook-screws b. The friction occasioned by the spring c pressing on the rod d is sufficient to hold said rod at any desired vertical adjustment, and by means o f the hooks d2 and d3 said rod may be raised or lowered, as desired, and if at any time it becomes necessary to increase this friction the rod d is detached from the hook-screws b and said screws are turned farther in the support d. One end of the spring c is preferably slotted where the corresponding screwed shank passes therethrough, as shown. in Fig. 2, which construction facilitates the operation of said support and the adjustment of the pressure thereon, together with the adjustment of the rod el. This device is simple in construction and operation and is comparatively inexpensive and well adapted to accomplish the obj ect for which it was intended, and changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention o r sacricing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v l. A hanger of the class described, comprising a support, hook screws adapted to be .screwed thereinto, a plate-spring mounted on said screws, and a rod inserted in the heads of the hook-screws and bearing onvthe said spring, said rod being provided with hooks, substantially as shown and described.
2. A device of the class described comprising a support, keepers secured thereto, a vertically-adjusta'ble member mounted in said keepers, and provided with a plurality of hooks and a spring placed between said support and said vertically-adjustable member, substantially as shown and described.v
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses.
ARTHUR WILLIAM VAN DEMARK.
