UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMELIA H. \VARD, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOOK AND MUSIC HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,839, dated April 27, 1886.
(No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMELIA H. WARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Book and Music Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in book and music holders; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book and music holder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line a: a", Fig. 1..
In the drawings, a a indicate the two parts of the back of the holder, and b the base strip thereof, also in two parts, secured by one edge to said back parts near the lower edge of the front side of the latter and pro jecting at right angles therefrom, thereby forming a rest or support for the book or other thing placed on the holder. An end piece, 0, is fixed to one end of the back piece a and of the said base-strip b, as shown, having thereon, near its outer edge, a leaf-holder, d, of wire or other suitable material, which reaches more or less over the back piece a, and serves to retain a portion of the leaves of a book or sheets of music in a proper position when on the holder. The back piece a, which is shorter than said piece a, has a similar end piece, e, to-said piece 0, attached thereto, but the end piece eis hinged at the end of the back piece a, and is provided with one or more leaf-holdersf, of wire, like the leafholder d, which project from its edge. The lower endof the hinged end piece 6 terminates at the upper side of the base-strip I). Said hinged end piece 6 is capable of being swung from the position shown in Fig. l to that there shown in dotted lines, or more or less toward the face of the back piece a, in order to bring the piece 6 and the leafholders thereon over onto a part of theleaves of the book. In order to cause the said end piece e to retain its position when turned over onto said book-leaves,'and hold the latter from swinging upward, the hinges x are made to swing on their pintles with more or less friction, thereby preventing a too free vibratory motion of said end piece.
The holder is made substantially in two sections, as described, and the latter are united adj ustably by the bevel-edged strips h h, which are secured by one end to the rear side of the back piece a, and their opposite ends engage with the inner opposite undercut edges of the slats i i, which are secured on the rear side of the back piece a. The ends of said strips h are united by a crosspiece, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The abovedeseribed manner of uniting the said two sections of the holder provides for sliding the latter apart or from and toward each other to adjust the length of the holder to thewidth of the book or music to be held thereon. as the strips h slide under the edges of the slats Land are by the latter held firmly against the back side of the piece a. A brace, z, is hung to the back side of the holder, to support the same in an inclined position when it is set on a table, and rubber bearingstnds n (shown in Fig. 2 and in dotted lines in Fig. 1) are fixed in the back and lower edge of the book-holder to prevent the latter from marring the music-rack of a piano when placed thereon and to give it a certain frictional hold on a table when placed thereon.
The said holder is made preferably of any suitable wood, and is by reason of its said adjustable feature adapted to hold books and sheet-music of various dimensions.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is- A book and music holder consisting of the back piece a, having the undercut slats 2' i thereon, the back piece a, having the beveled edge stripsiz secured thereto, havingasliding engagement with said slats i, the end piece 0, fixed to one end of said back piece (1,, and having the leaf-holder cl thereon, the end piece 0, hinged at one end of said back piece a, and having one or more leaf-holders f thereon, and a basest-rip, b, in two parts, fixed at the lower edge of said back parts and projecting at right angles therefrom, substantially as set forth. AMELIA I-I. WARD.
