APPLICATION men Dc.23.1916.

BOOK-SU'PPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led December 23, 1916. Serial ll'or 138,534.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST RIEBE, a citi- Zen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Supports, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to a device particularly adapted and intended to be supported by and in front of the user, and to receive and support a book or similar' object in proper position to be easily read or examined by the user. It may also be used as a writing table and for other purposes.
The object of my invention is to produce a device or this kind that will be strong, compact and light, and which can be easily adjusted and held in position in front of Y the user.
In the drawing accompanying and forming a part of this specification, I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention. f
Referring to the drawing Figure l shows the complete device in use;
Fig. 2 is a planview; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring in detail to the structure shown, the device comprises a :dat board ortable l provided at its rear edge with a strip or stop 2 and is adapted to receive and support a book or similar object, as shown at 8 in Fig. 1.
In order that` the table 1 may be readily adjusted to and supported by the body of the user, I provide arms 4 whichy extend rearwardly. These arms are located one near each end of the table and slide in grooves 5 formed lin the transverse strips 6 secured to the lower side of the board. A spring member 8 is secured to each arm at 9, and the cross member 10 which extends between the arms is secured to these spring members and operates to hold the arms in proper alinement. The pins 11 are secured to the spring members 8 and are adapted to enter a series of holes 12 formed in the table, and thereby to hold the arms in any desired point of adjustment. The cross member l() not only operates to secure the arms to each other, but provides an easy means whereby the user may withdraw the pins and adjust the arms et by sliding them in or out, as desired.
13 is a flexible band adjustable as to length by the buckle 14 adapted to bear against the body of the user. l5 is an adjustable band having its ends secured to the table l, and
this band is adapted to pass' behind the neck or shoulders ol the user, as shown in Fig.y l, so as to coperate with the other band and to support the table, as shown. The band 15 may be adjusted as to length by the buckle 16. By adjusting the lengths of the bands 13 and 15 and the position of the arms 4, the device can readily be adjusted to the body of the user so as to support a book or similar object in proper position to be read or examined, thereby relieving the hands and arms of the user from this duty. It
may also be adjusted so as to be used as a desk or table for writing and similar uses.
While I have described only one embodiment of my invention, I am aware that modifications thereoi: may be made by those skilled in the art without departing 'from A the scope of my claims.
What I claim is:
1. A device ofthe kind described, comprising a table, rearwardly extending arms slidably secured to the table, a spring member secured to the inner end of each arm, a cross member secured to said spring members and adapted to hold said arms in alinement, a series of holes in said table, pins secured to said spring members and adapted to enter said holes, and to hold the arms in any desired point of adjustment, means secured to the outer ends of said arms and adapted to bear against the body ol' the operator, and means secured to the table for .supporting the device from the body of the operator, all for the purpose described.
2. A device of the kind described, comprising a table, rearwardly extending arms slidably secured to the lower surface of the table adjacent its ends, a spring member secured to the inner end of each arm, a cross member secured to said spring members and adapted to hold said arms in alinement, a series of holes in said table, pins secured to said spring members and adapted to enter said holes and to hold the arms in any de' sired point'of adjustment, a band secured to the outer ends of said arms, and a band secured to the table, all for the purpose de scribed.
ERNEST RIEBE.
