Description

narran sfrafrns rarnnfi* ortica,
FREDERICK II. FOSTER, OF RACINE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO FOSTER AND WILLIAMS MANUFACTRING COMPANY, OFVRACINE, WISCONSIN,
A CORPORATION OF WISCONSIN.
Y PAPER-PAD HOLDER.
Fo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK HENRY Fosrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper- Pad Holders, of which the following is a specication. Y
My invention relates to certain improvements in holders for pads of paper which may be used for any purpose desired, either memorandum pads, sale slips, letter or bill heads, or in fact packages or pads of paper adapted to be used for any desired' purpose.
The object of my invention is to provide a holder of this character which is cheap and simple in construction, composed of few parts and durable.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in certain constructions,
Specification of Letters Patent. Application led October 20, 1908.
Patented April 20, 1909.
Serial No. 458,732.
in Figs. l and 2, triangular form as shown in Fig. 3, or of any other shape as may be founddesirable, the only essential being that it shall provide two edges, one adapted to engage the groove Aiand the other the pad of paper to clamp the pad firmly in position.
,')referably and as shown the side edges of the back lare inturned to form strengthi ening anges 6, these {ianges preferably eX- l 1 l l combinations and arrangements of parts the l preferred form of which will be rst described in connection with the accompanying drawings and then the invention particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustrationI have shown one form of pad holder embodying one of the forms to which my invention is adapted and wherein the same part is designated by the same reference numeral wherever it occurs Figure l is a perspective view of the pad holder open; Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the parts separated, showing a con-v struction adapted to connect a sheet to the end of the back and Fig. l is a detail perspective view partly broken away with parts separated to more clearly show my constructilfin, and showing a modified form of spring c p.
l designates the body vportion which, as shown, is preferably made of sheet 'metal and having at one end the up-turned end 2 against which the head of the pad of paper 3 is adapted to rest.
i designates a groove or depression eX- tending across the body portion 1 a short distance back from the upturned end 2. One edge of the spring clip 5 is adapted to enter this groove so that it will firmly engage the back l and the other edge of the clip rests upon the top of the 'pad as illustrated. This clip is formed of spring metal and may be of cylindrical form, as shown tending from the groove of the back.
Then it is desired to provide the pad holder with a flexible cover of leather, canvas or similar material, or when it is desired to have a backing sheet of Celluloid or the like which is adapted to be placed immediately beneath the first sheet of the pad for the purpose of giving a hard surface upon which to write, or when a carbon sheet is needed I preferably form a holder for such flexible cover or the like by slightly raising the flanges 6, as shown at 7, so that a plate 8 may be slipped in between the flanges and the body of the back, whereby the iieXible sheet 9 vwhich may be a cover, a Celluloid sheet, or other device will be clamped between the back l and the plate 8 and held frictionally in position. In order to avoid any tendency to 'tear the material to the outer edge so clamped I oreferably turn over the outer edge of the p ate, as shown at 10.
f 11 designates the cover which preferably has its longitudinal edges inturned, as shown at l2, in order to strengthen the cover and present smooth sides, and at its inner end has the inturned flange 13 in which is secured a bail lil. rIhe free loop of this bail is so positioned away from the inner end of the cover that the clip 5 can loosely pass therethrough, in order to hinge the cover to the holder, as clearly illustrated in the drawin s.
In assembling my device for use a pad of paperis laid upon lhe back l with the top edge of the pad against the upturned end 2 to the lower edge of the back by means of the plate 8.
It is to be understood that my holder is adapted for general use and that it can be used with or Without the carbon holder as desired.
I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of construction and arrangement of parts Without departing from the appended claims, and I therefore do not intend to limit myself to the specific form shown and described.
What I claim as new and by Letters Patent is` In a pad holder the combination with the back portion of a cover portion provided With aV bail desire to secure said clip passing through the bail of the cover to form a inge.
2. In a pad holder the combination With l aback having an upturned end, of a cover provided with a bail at one spring clip adapted tion and to, said clip passing' through the bail of the cover to form a hinge.
In a pad holder the combination with a back portion provided with a groove adjacent one end, a cover provided with a bail extending from one end thereof, a spring clip adapted to secure a pad on the back, said spring Clip when in position passing through the bail of the cover and having its engaging edges resting upon the pad and in the groove of the back.
l-. In a pad holder the combination with a back portion, of means for securing a pad o paper thereon, said back portion havin()` inturned flanges and a plate adapted to be inserted under the fianges at the for the purpose described.
In testimony whereofl I aiiix my in presence of two Witnesses.
