PHILIP IV. IRTH, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
FILE FOR DUPLICATE SALES-SLIPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 792,486, dated June 13, 1905.
Application filed December 17, 1903. Serial No. 185,481.
To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP I/V. IVIRTH, of Minneapolis, Hcnnepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Files for D u plicate Sales-Slips, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to devices for keeping small running accounts; and the object of the invention is to provide a device wherein the duplicate sales-slips can be readily filed and conveniently examined at any time.
A further object is to provide an improved means in connection with the duplicate-slip file for holding a customers name-plate to enable the merchant or clerk to select at a glance the file appropriated for the sales-slips of any customer.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a slip-file embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same broken away to show the manner of securing the slip-retaining spring on the back-cover. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line y y of Fig. 2.
In the drawings, 2 represents a back-cover, preferably of strawboard or other suitable material. and 3 a plate of thinner material, between which and said cover a sheet-metal plate 4 is arranged. At one end the plate 4 has an upwardly-turned part or flange 5, terminating in an inwardly-turned flange 6, that overhangs the end of the file and between which and the back-cover the ends of the duplicate slips are inserted. The opposite end of the plate 4 is provided with an upwardlyturned part7, having an outwardly-turned lip 8, between which and the part 7 a narrow groove or recess is formed to receive the upper edge of the nameplate 9, whereon the name of the customer is placed. A space 10 is provided between flange 7 and the contiguous end of the cover 2, into which the inwardly-turned lower edge of the name-plate is inserted, and the upper edge being held by the lip 8 it will manifestly be impossible for the plate to slip out of place while the file is in use. The plate 4 extends the full length of the back-cover, forming a substantial support therefor, and near one end clips or tongues 11 are formed that overlap the inwardly-turned ends 12 of a spring 13, the main portion of which bears upon the backcover at a point preferably midway between its ends. Extensions 14, projecting at right angles to the ends 12, prevent the accidental disengagement of the spring 13 from the clips 11. The ends 12 are preferably inserted between the metal plate 4 and the cover 3 and are, with the clips 11, invisible and do not in any way detract from the neat appearance of the file, the side portions of the spring and the connecting cross-bar being the only parts that are exposed when the file is in use. (See Fig. 1.)
A series of duplicate slips 15 are shown in the file, being retained at one end by the overhanging flange 6 and gripped in the middle by the pressure-spring. This means for holding the slips in the file permits the clerk or other person to very readily and easily turn back either end of the slips to refer to the entry on any slip in the file.
The metal plate extending the full length of the back-cover greatly adds to the strength and rigidity of the file, and the upturned ends of said plate serve to protect the ends of the duplicate slips, preventing them from turning up and at the same time allowing convenient and ready inspection of the same.
I claim as my invention 1. A file for duplicate sales-slips, comprising a back-cover having an upwardly-turned part 7 at one end, the upper edge of said part being outwardly turned forming a lip 8, and a name-plate having its upper edge inserted under said lip and its lower edge into a recess provided in the end of said cover, substantially as described.
2. A file for duplicate sales-slips, comprising a back-cover, a metallic plate secured thereon and having an upwardly-turned end substantially flush with one end of said cover, a recess being formed between said end and said cover, an outwardly-turned lip provided on said upwardly-turned end, and a nameplate having its upper edge inserted under said lip and its lower edge into said recess.
3. A file for duplicate sales-slips, comprising a back-cover, a metallic plate secured thereon, a suitable covering for said plate, clips pressed out of said plate near one end and a spring-pressure device having its ends inwardly turned and secured by said clips and its middle portion resting upon said plate near the center thereof, substantially as described.
4. A file for duplicate sales-slips, comprising a back-cover, a metallic plate thereon, the ends of said metallic plate being upwardly turned and substantially flush with the ends of said cover, one end of said metallic plate having an inwardly-turned flange beneath which the ends of the sales-slips are inserted, an outwardly-turned lip provided on the opposite end of said metallic plate to receive 20
