J. W. GEARHART.
BLANK BOOK COVER.
APPLICATION YILBD MAn.21,1o1a.

JOHN W. GEARHART, or FRESNO, CALIFRNIA.
BLANK-nooit COVER.
meneer.
To all whom ttm/,zy concer/a Be it known that I, JOHN W. Gnnnrmnr, a citizen "of the United States, residing at Fresno, in the county of Fresno and State oit California, have invented new and useful improvements in Blank-Book Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to blank book covers and especially to covers for receiving a filler, such as a stenographers note book.
One object of the present invention is to simplify and improve the cover construction.
Another object of the invention is to associate with one side member ot the cover a back member constituting also a holder with` which a tiller may easily be detachably connected.
A further object ot the invention is to provide in connection with the book cover a pivotally supported loop or yoke which may be used for supporting the side members ot the cover in a tilted position with respect to one another or in approximate Ashape, thereby supporting the filler in a convenient position for transcribingnotes thereon; said loop when not in present use for supporting purposes being accommodated between the filler supporting back member and a flexible back member whereby the side cover' members are connected together.
lVith these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
ln the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however', understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the d awing,--Figure 1 is a perspec- 'tive view showing the improved blank book cover with a filler therein in position for transcribing. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken longitudinally through the book cover and filler, the topmost side cover being thrown open. F ig. 3 is a top plan view of the device as seen in Fig. 2. Fig. l is a erspective detail view of a portion of the liack member having the filler attaching Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 21, 1913.
Patented July 28, 1914. serial No. 755,973.
device. Fig. 5 is a perspective detail view ol a portion of `a filler holder cooperating therewith.
Corresponding `parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters oi. re'lnence.
The side cover members A. and B of the improved device are connected together by a flexible back member 10. One ot' the side cover members includes in its construction a plate 11 oil sheet metal, one end et which .is upturned at .right angles to the body o'l the plate so as to 'form `a flange 12. Suitably connected with the flange 12 are angle lugs 13 which combine to lorm a T-head, as will be best seen in Fig. 4;. The flange 12 is formed adjacent to the flexible back niember 10, which latter folds upon said tlange when the side members of the cover are folded together.
A filler C provided, the same consisting oit a plurality ot loose leaves which are connected together by a holder consisting of a channel strip 141; of sheet metal, the same being clamped upon the stack of leaves at one edge thereof, and said channel strip being provided with a T-shaped notch 15 adapted to be placed in engagement with the T-hcad termed by the angle lugs 13 for the purpose of assembling the filler with the cover.
The metallic stifening plate 11 o1 the cover member A is rolled or bent at one end to :form a sleeve 1G for the reception of pivot members 17 formed by bending the ends of the limbs or side members 1S olf a yoke constructed of suitable wire; the bridge piece 19 of said yoke being of a length equal to the width of the side members et the hack cover. Vhcn the latter is folded together, the bridge piece ot' the yoke may be disposed between the upstanding flange 12 and the flexible back portion 10, as seen in Fig. 2, and the cover may then be closed upon the filler, as will be readily understood. Vhen the device is laid down flat on a table, the top cover member B may be thrown open, as seen Ain Fig. 2, and the leaves of the filler may then be successively turned :for the writing ot' notes, said leaves being preferably wzakened adjacent to their connected edges in accordance with the construction previously patented to me. Vhen the notes are to be transcribed, the side members A and B of the cover are placed in a tilted position with respect to one another, and the lower edge of the cover member B is confined within the yoke, thereby preventing the side members from spreading and supporting the filler in a convenient position for transcribing.
While the invention has been described particularly with reference to stenographers note books, it will be understood that it may be used for a variety of purposes, and that no limitation is intended in this respect.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new, is
il. A book cover comprising side cover members and a flexible back member con-- necting the same, one of said side cover members having an upstanding rigid flange provided with filler attaching means, and a yoke pivotally connected With one side cover member, spanning` the other side cover member and including a bridge piece adapted to rest in the angle between the flexible back member and the upstanding rigid flange.
2. A book cover for blank leaves com prising side cover members, a flexible back member connecting the same and a filler support adjacent to the back member, and a yoke pivotally connected with one side cover member and adapted to span the filler support and the other side cover member.
3. A book cover comprising side cover members and a flexible back member oonnecting the same, one of said side cover members including va metallic reinforcing plate having an upturned flange adjacent to the back member and constituting a filler support and having at its opposite end a rolled portion forming a sleeve, and a yoke pivoted in said sleeve and adapted to span the filler support and the other side cover member. s
ln testimony whereof ll affix my signature in presence of tvvo Witnesses.
