REMOVABLE BOOK GOVER- I .dttornej s her. wnahinginn, D4 0.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS D. PRICE, or OARROLLTON, ILLINOIS.
REMOVABLE BOOK-COVER.
SPECIFIGATIONformingpart of Letters Patent No. 255,331, dated March 21, 1882.
Application filed December 17, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS D. PRICE, of Oarrolltou, in thecounty of Greene and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Removable Book-Covers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cover detached. Fig; 2 is a perspective view of the pad detached. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the cover with the pad in position. Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section of the same, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the cover and pad complete.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to note and memorandum books; and it consists of an improved cover adapted to receive a pad of blank leaves and ablotting-pad, and means for holding the same in place detachably, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the cover, which consists of the sides B B, connected by the back 0. The latter is provided at its ends with flat inturned metallic hooksD D, preferably of a width corresponding to the thickness of the back, and which, as in the drawings, may be formed of a single piece or strip of metal, E, turned in at the ends, as shown. By this construction the strip E serves to stiffen the back; or it may actually form the back by hinging or flexibly connecting the sides of the cover to said strip.
F is a pad of blank leaves (or printed when desired, as the device may be employed as a temporary binder) suitably bound or se cured together at one end or edge. To the under side of the pad F, at said end or edge, is glued or otherwise secured a flexible strip, G, of strong paper, parchment, leather, or other suitable materialsufficiently flexible in its nature to answer the purpose for which it is intended. To the projecting end of said flexible strip, at, a distance from the end or edge of the pad at least equal to the thickness of said pad, is secured a sheet, H, of blottingpaper of a size equal to the size of the leaves of the pad. For the blotting-paper, however, may be substituted a sheet of card-board or other suitable material of the required size, or simply a cross-piece of thin wood or sheet metal or other material equal in width to the width of the pad.
The strip Gr should be so much narrower than the pad that it will enter readily between the ends of the hooks D.
I is a flat strip of wood, metal, or other ma terial adapted to fit nicely between the hooks D, adjoining the back 0 of the cover.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood by reference to the drawings hereto, annexed. To adjust the pad, itis placed upon one of the sides of the open cover. blotter His raised, so as to introduce the connecting-strip G between the hooks D, and the strip I is then placed between the hooks, thus confining the flexible strip G between said strip and the back of the cover, andv thus securing the pad in position.
- To remove the pad it is only necessary, after opening the cover, to lift or pull the blotter H upward, thus disengaging the holdingstrip 1, when the pad may be immediately removed.
This device is exceedingly simple and convenient for numerous purposes, which will readily suggest themselves, and it may be manufactured at a trifling expense. The pads may be supplied separately with the blotters attached.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination of the cover, the back of which is provided at its ends with inturned hooks, the pad, having a blotter attached by means'ot' a flexible strip secured to the under side of the pad, as described, and the holding strip I, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aftixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS D. PRICE.
