UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

BQOK-MARK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,348, dated May 24, 1892.
Application filed February 23, 1892. Serial No. 422,500. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, SAMUEL L. SAUNDERS and CHARLES A. L. SAUNDERS, both of Lynn, in the county of Essex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Book-Markers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view representing a book with our marker applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view representing the marker detached.
The device comprises a marker a, which is mounted to swing loosely on its supportingwire 6. As represented in the present. instance, said wire is bent to form an end bar 2 and the rearwardly-extending prongs 4 4. Then combined with a book, (see Fig. 1,) the prongs 4 4 are extended between the leaves and back-binding, with the bar 2 extending across the edge face of the book, as shown. The wire is bentto form angles ff, whereby the bar 2 is set away from the back-binding of the book, so that the marker can be readilymoved from a position out of the book, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. l, to a position between the book-leaves, as shown.
The marker is adapted to be moved on the bar 2, so as to be placed between any leaves of the book that may be desired.
As shown in the present instance, the device is intended to be combined detachably with a book, to which end the device is preferably made of spring-wire and has its prongs bent so that when extended between the leafedges and back-binding the prongs will bear against the binding, and thus hold the device in place.
Obviously the device may be combined with the book by having the prongs 4 4 bound in between the back-binding and leaf edges, in which case the prongs may be made of any suitable formation to fit most conveniently between the binding and leaf edges.
We claim- 1. The combination, with a book, of the marker a, the bar 2, and its supporting-prongs, constructed substantially as described.
2. As an article of manufacture, the herein described book-marker, composed of marker a, wire 6, bent to form the bar 2, adapted for extension across the edge of the book, and the prongs 4 4, adapted for combination with a book, substantially as described.
8. The combination of the marker at and wire 6, formed of spring material and having bar 2, the prongs 4 4, and angles ff, as and for the purposes described.
Signed at Lynn, Massachusetts, this 8th day of January, A. D. 1892.
SAMUEL L. SAUNDERS. CHARLES A. L. SAUNDERS.
