UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,

BOOK-MARK.)
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 13, 1908.
Application filed March 16, 1907. Serial No. 362,761.
To all whom 'Ltma'y concern:
Be it known that we, WVI LIAM FRANKLIN BRooKEr'r, of Anthony, in the county of Harper and State of Kansas, and NORMAN HUGH BEEBE, of Wichita, in the county 'of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book- Marks, of which the following is a speoification. 7 I
Our invention relates to improvements in book marks so-called, which is equally adapted to serve as a reference card or slip. Its
objects are to promote great simplicity and lightness as to structure; to provide for its attachment to the book-back whether of limp or flexible nature or otherwise; to enable the ready and proper closing of the book as though the device were not attached there-- to; and to carry out these various objects with facility and expedition. Said invention consists of certain features or instrumentalities substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and specifically pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of our inventionFigure 1 is a broken perspective view thereof as applied for actual use. Fig. 2 is a detached plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a broken like view of the reference card or slip alone. Fig. 4 is a disassembled per-' spective view of one form of the radius or attaching rod. Fig. 5 is a like view of the clasp member. Fig. 6 is a detached perspective view of the reference-card carrying member. Fig. 7 is an end view thereof. Fig. 8 is a modification of the radius or attaching rod member.
In the disclosure of our invention, we employ a clasp or clip 1 preferably of the structural outline disclosed, for attachment or application to the back of a book whether it may be of the flexible or limp type or other character. Said clip or clasp is preferably in a single piece of stout wire or metal, which is bent into oblong or rectangular form as at 2, for a purpose presently noted, and then coiled or wound upon itself with two opposite turns as at 3 and finally extended to form two opposed jaws 4c, 5. These jawforming portions are flattened and one disposed edgewise vertically and the other with its greater area arranged horizontally and accordingly having its flat surface presented to the edge of the aforesaid jaw for their clip 1 thus being articulated or pivoted to the forming wire of said loop for the ready flexing thereof with the opening and closing movement of the book to which it is applied. Said radius rod-member 6 is preferably twisted or coiled upon itself, outward from the eyes or ring-formations 7, as at 8, and thence formed or terminated at its inner end into a loop 9 the purpose of which will presently appear.
A holder or carrying member 10 for the reference slip or card 11, is formed of a metal piece folded or doubled so as to form two spaced-apart parallel plate portions 12 with their inner longitudinal edges joined by a tubular continuation thereof 13 to receive the forming wire of the loop 9 of the radius -rod 6, thus also providing for articulating or pivoting said reference-card "holder to said radius-rod to further conform to the opening and closing movement of the book. Said holder 10 has one of its opposite longitudinal edgesprovided with downwardextended lugs 14 practically abutting the other corresponding edge of said holder, and which lugs are effective, after the insertion of the reference-card the requisite distance in between the plate portions 12 of said holder to be inserted into apertures 15 in said reference-card, thus providing for the effective retention of the latter in place in said holder.
As suggested by the modification disclosed by Fig. 8, in lieu of the radius -rod member6, we may employ the staple-like contrivance 16, the adaptation or application of which is readily apparent.
It will be noted that the memorandum or reference-card 11 is, in practice, interposed between the leaves of the book, at any point it may be subsequently desired to again refer to and upon it may be noted any data or memoranda which may be desired for future use. Also that, by the use of this contrivance, the reference-card or slip with its book-attaching means may remain continuously in its attached position without interference whatsoever with the otherwise use of the book or the turning of the leaves, the flexible connection for the reference or memorandum card readily conforming or yielding thereto, also that the contrivance may be duplicated for other leaves of the book if desired.
1. As an article of manufacture, a book mark comprising a spring clasp, a radius rod hinged directly to the clasp and a card hinged to the outer end of the radius rod.
2. As an article of manufacture, a book mark, comprising a clasp bent at one end into oblong or rectangular form, then coiled or Wound upon itself and terminating in jaws, a radius rod composed of wire, a por tion of which is coiled upon itself and the ends of which are pivoted to the oblong or rectangular portion of the clasp, and a holder comprising a metal piece folded or doubled to loosely embrace the outer end of the radius rod and a reference slip or card held by the holder.
3. A device as described, comprising a clasp, a holder for the purpose stated, and connecting means between said clasp and said holder, consisting of a radius-rod hav 1 ing a loop at one end, with a portion bent at a right angle and then returned and twisted upon itself and deflected therefrom diagonally and terminated at a point opposed to the outer end of said radius-rod, for etiect ing pivotal connection with said clasp, and holder.
4-. A device of the character described. comprising a holder for the purpose stated having opposed plate portions terminating in a tubular formation, one of said plateportions provided oppositely to said tubular formation with downward extended lugs abutting the corresponding edge of the other plate-portion means for attachment to the back of a book and connecting means be tween said holder and said book back attaching means.
In testimony whereof we aiiix our signatures, in presence of two witnesses.
