UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABNER LINWOOD I-IOLTON, OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.
TABLET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,260, dated June 24, 1902.
Application filed April 1, 1902- Serial No. 101,010. (No model.)
To a whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ABNER LINWOOD I-IOL- TON, of Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented a new and tablets, and particularly in that class of such tablets comprising a number of loose leaves or sheets and means for holding them to gether, such as are commonly used by stenographers and others for note-books; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinationsof parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tablet embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the binder or holder.
The sheets or leaves A may be ruled to suit stenographic use or otherwise, as desired, and are provided near one end with the openings at to receive the bows of the holder.
The holder B comprises the end bows O and the connecting-rod D,Which extends between and connects the opposite bows, as will be understood from Figs. 1 and 3. As shown, the holder is preferably formed of a length of wire of suitable weight extending on a straight line between the bows to form the connecting-rod and the bows at the ends of said rod. The bows are alike, and each includes a fixed base-section 1, bent from the rod D at a right angle thereto, the arch 2,curving back over the section 1 and extending to the opposite side of the rod D a distance about equal the length of the section 1, and the base-section 3,approximately in alinement with the section 1 and whose extremity at I is free and lies normally adjacent to the connecting-rod D. The sections 1 and 3 constitute a flat base for the bow.
In use the sheets when written upon are thrown over the arches of the bows to the opposite side, and when all the sheets have been written upon on one side the tablet can be reversed and the opposite sides of the leaves be written upon, as will be readily understood from Fig. 1 by those familiar with the use of this class of tablets.
It will be noticed, especially from Fig. 3
that the base-sections 1 depart from the main cross-bar I) at aright angle thereto, and the juncture of the cross-bar D and the basesections 1, as clearly shown in the said Fig. 3. By this construction I am able to secure a bow or arch 2 of ample length of a base double the length of the sections 1 and also seen re the location of the cross-bar D approximately concentric with the bows or arches 2, as will be understood from the drawings.
A special and important advantage results from locating the connecting-rod D of my device midway between the ends of the bows and concentric therewith, as thereby I am able to make the fixed base-section 1 comparatively short, thus giving a more rigid supportfor the curved portion of the bow and also arrange the said connecting-bar so it will not underlie the leaves of the tablet in either adjustment of the said leaves, so that the leaves may lie flat upon the table or other support entirely to their upper edges in both adjustments.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The holder for tablets substantially as herein described and shown, having a cross or connecting rod and provided at the ends thereof with projecting base-sections at approximately right angles to the connectingrod, the bows or arches extending from the outer ends of the base-sections over the same and thence to a point beyond the connectingrod approximately equal to the length of the said base-sections and provided at such ends of the bows or arches with returned base-sections approximately equal to the length of the base-sectionsprojecting from the ends of the connecting-rod, all substantially as set forth, whereby the connecting-rod is located approximately concentric with the bows or arches and midway between the ends of the base of said bows or arches, as and for the purposes set forth.
ABNER LINWOOD HOLTON.
