UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GARDNER L. PLUMLEY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HOLDER FOR SNELL FLY-HOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 657,786, dated September 11, 1900.
Application led April 9, 1900. Serial No. 12,071. (No model.)
To all wwnt t may concern:
Be it known that LGARDNER L. PLUMLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements iu Holders for Snell Fly- Hooks,of which the followingis afull and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to holders for snell fly-hooks, and belongs to that class of these devices which are usually made in book form, said books containing a plurality of leaves or sheets with which the snell fly-hooks are connected.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which like reference characters denote like parts in the several views, Figure l represents one sheet or leaf of a snell ily-hook book; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3, a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l; Fig. 4, a View similar to Fig. l, showing a modified form of construction; Fig. 5, a longitudinal section thereof on the line 5 5; Fig. 6, a transverse section on the line 6 6; and Fig. 7, a view at right angles to Fig. 6, showing another modication.
In practice Iform the leaves or sheets which I employ and which are also in practice bound into books of ordinary pasteboard, cardboard, or any other suitable material, and in Figs. l and 2 one of said sheets or leaves is designated by the reference character A. Across each end of the sheet or leaf A, in the form-of construction shown in Figs. l and 2, is placed a row of hooks B, and across the central portion of the sheet is secured a bar C, which is preferably angular in cross-section and the ends of which are bent backwardly and secured to the leaf or sheet, as shown at D. As thus made, the body portion of the bar C sets out from the sheet or leaf, and mounted thereon are a plurality of blocks E, which are free to slide on said bar. In connecting the blocks F. with the bar C slots G are made in one side of said blocks and the bar C slipped thereinto, and said slots are afterward lled with any suitable material, so as to hold the block E on said bar.
In the form of construction shown in Fig.
1 a spiral spring H is mounted on the bar C, midway thereof, and this spring serves to force said blocks in opposite directions and to hold them securely together. The bar C is provided at its opposite ends with angular portions K, against which the blocks are forced by the spring H, and in connecting the snell fly-hooks with this form of holder the hook L is connected with one of the hooks B and the snell M is passed downwardly between two of the blocks E, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The spring H forces the blocks together' and holds the snells securely in position, and in this position said snells will beheld until removed, as will be readily understood.
In the form of construction shown in Figs. 4 to 6, inclusive, the hooks Bare arranged only at one end, while the bar C is arranged adjacent to the opposite end. In this form of construction the blocks E are convex in cross-section on their outer surfaces and at on their inner or bottom surfaces and two of the springs H are employed, one at each end of the bar C, and said bar C is also preferably made in the form of a cylindrical rod, and the springs H serve to force the blocks E toward the center of said rod. The application of the snell and hook to this form ot'v holder is shown in Fig. l and is the same as hereinbefore described, and the springs H force the blocks together, so as to securely hold the snell. 1
In Fig. 7 I have shown another modilication in which the blocks E are provided at the opposite sides with grooves, and a piece of sheet metal K is secured to the leaf or sheet A and provided with inwardly directed flanges L, which fit in said grooves and which hold the blocks E in position while permitting the same to move longitudinally of the holder, and it will be understood that suitable springs are used to force the blocks E together.
As hereinbefore stated, the separate sheets or leaves A are in practice bound into a book, and it will be apparent that other changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I
ICO
claim as neW and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a holder for Snell-hooks, a sheet or leaf provided with a transverse roW of hooks, and also with a transverse rod or bar on which are mounted slidable spring-operated blocks, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a holder for Snell-hooks, a sheet or leaf provided at each end With a transverse row of hooks, and centrally thereof With a transverse rod or bar,and a plu rality of springoperated blocks mounted on said rod or bar, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a device of the class described, a sheet or leaf provided with a transverse row of hooks, and a transverse rod or bar, a plurality of slidable blocks mounted on said rod or bar, and springs arranged on said rod or bar and.
adapted to force said blocks together, substantially as shown and described.
Il. A Snell-hook holder comprising a sheet or leaf provided With a row of hook attachments, and a rod or bar arranged substan tially parallel With said hook attachments, and provided with a plurality of separate spring-operated Snell-holders loosely and slidably mounted thereon, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 7th day of April, 1900.
