UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
AUGUST LUNDBERG, OF IVORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOOK-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,494, dated June 1, 1897.
Application filed August 11, 1896. Serial No. 602,435. (No model.)
To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST LUNDBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVorcester, in the count-y of IVoroester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in book-supporters, the object of the same being to provide a simple and cheaply-constructed device for holding in vertical position the books at the end of the row upon a shelf which is not completely full.
The invention consists of a supporter made of a strip of sheet metal or wire bent so that the arms thereof lie parallel one to the other and also bent at a point adjacent to the centers of the two arms, so that the outer ends thereof lie at right angles to the curved part thereof, the said arms being adapted to fit' within grooves in the book-shelf and being covered by a plate upon which the outer books rest.
The invention also consists in other details of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of the preferred form of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section through a book-shelf with my supporter applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section through the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the different views.
The book-shelf 1 is formed with longitudinal grooves 2 2 in its upper surface, or the same may have parallel strips of wood tacked or otherwise secured to it, which are separated one from the other, forming grooves.
My supporter is made up of a strip 3 of wire or sheet metal bent at its upper end, forming the curved portion 4, with the arms 5 5 thereof lying parallel to each other. The said arms are themselves bent at points adjacent to their centers at right angles to the main part of the supporter, forming flanges 6 6, which are adapted to fit within the grooves 2 2 in the shelf 1. Riveted or otherwise secured to the flanges 6 upon the top side thereof is a plate 7, of metal, which is adapted to slide upon the top surface of the shelf 1.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the supporter may be moved back and forth on the shelf 1, so that the vertical portion thereof may be adjusted at any point desired, the outer books lying upon the plate '7 and preventing the same from falling.
Having now described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a book-shelf having longitudinal grooves therein, of a book-supporter made up of a curved strip of wire or sheet metal, the arms of which lie parallel to one another and are formed with flanges 1ying at right angles to the main portion thereof, said flanges being adapted to fit and move within the grooves in said shelf, and a plate of metal separate from but riveted or otherwise secured to said flanges and adapted to slip upon the top surface of said shelf.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AUGUST LUNDBERG. Witnesses: ARTHUR G. WARREN, EDWARD A. GAGE.
