COMBINED BOOK SUPPORT AND LABEL HOLDER. No. 575,294. r 4 Patented Jan. 12, 1897 mul NITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM A. BORDEN, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO EDWVARD A. BURGESS, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED BOOK-SUPPORT AND LABEL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 575,294, dated January 12, 1897. Application filed October 29,1894. SerialNo. 527,133. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM A. BORDEN, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in a Combined Book-Support and Label-Holder; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification and represents a perspective view of a combined book-support and label-holder.
This invention relates to an improvement in book-supports, and particularly such as are formed from sheet metal bent at right angles, one portion to stand beneath a book on a shelf or table, the other portion standing upright beside the book and so as to support the said book in an upright position, it being understood that a support is applied next to the last book on the shelf.
The object of this invention is to construct the support so that it will retain its position on the shelf, and also to combine with the support a label-holder, to which a card bearing the name of the author or other desirable information may be applied; and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
The support is formed from a sheet of thin metal bent to form a shelf-plate A and an upright B, which stand at right angles to each other. The forward edge of the plate is bent downward, the length of the downward bend corresponding to the thickness of the shelf to which the support is to be applied. Preferably the forward edge of the upright 13 will extend outward beyond the edge of the shelf, so as to be readily grasped for adjustment. The downward extension D forms a space to which labels may be attached, but as it is frequently necessary to change the labels I form a pocket at the forward edge into which cards may be readily inserted or removed, andthis is done by forming an extension or lip C integral with an outer plate E, and securing the said outer plate E to the downward extension D by pins or rivets a. To ofiset the outer plate E from the downward extension D, washers may be inserted between the plates and through which the rivets a may extend, or the outer plate may-be slightly offset so as to form a central opening at the top. The central portion of the plate E is removed, forming a sight-opening F to expose the face of the card inserted into the opening. This holder is readily applied to the shelf, and by means of the rearwardlyextending lip below the shelf will be held in an upright position, whether or not a book be placed upon the plate A.
It will be readily seen that this support cannot be pushed backward upon the shelf, is readily moved either to the right or left, as required, and the plate and upright having smooth surfaces do not wear the binding of the books, and,if desired, books may be placed either side of the upright, so that the said up right may form a division between sets or series of books, the upright extending beyond the edge of the shelf indicating such division and to so mark the position of said support that a careless person will not try to push in a book on both sides of it.
I am aware that book-supports consisting of a plate and an upright formed integral with each other are old, and I therefore do not wish to be understood as claiming, broadly, such as my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
1. The herein-described book-support comprising a horizontal plate, a vertical upright and a depending flange formed from a single piece of sheet metal, a second plate secured to said flange, and so as to leave an opening at its top between said plate and flange, said second plate constructed with a sight-opening, and a rearwardly-extended lip, substantially as described.
2. The herein described book support formed from sheet metal, and comprising a plate formed with a downwardly-depending flange at its forward end, an upright formed integral. with said plate, the forward edge of said upright extending outward beyond the plane of said flange, a second plate applied to said flange, and so as to leave an opening at the top between said plate and flange, said second plate constructed With a sight-opening and a rearwardly-extended lip, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
WM. A. BORDEN.
