UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OHAELEs BALL, OE PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
CLIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 522,774, dated July 10,1894.
Applicationiiled March 21, 1894. Serial No. 504,509. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.: Y
Be it known that I, CHARLES BALL, Of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clips; and I do hereby declare that 'the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
`This invention has reference to improvements in devices for grasping thin objects, such as sheets of paper.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and useful clip to which a tablet may be removably secured and firmly held.
The invention consistsin the peculiar construction of the `front portion Of the clip whereby a tablet may be removably secured thereto.
The invention also consists in such other peculiar features of construction and combination Of parts` as may hereinafter be more v fully described and pointed out in the claims.
represents a front view of the clip with the i tablet securing-device in the open position.
plates 7-7 of the base-plate.
Fig. 4 represents a rear view of the front plate with the securing-device Opened. Fig. 5 represents a cross-sectional view of the same, the tablet being in place.
Similar numbers of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.
In the drawings 6 indicates the back or base plate of the clip of any usual form and hav-` ing the upwardly-turned sideplates 77.` To the center of this plate is secured the arm 8 of the bent spring 9, the arm 10 thereof being furnished with the longitudinal-slot 11. The front plate 12 has the downwardly-bent side-plates 13-l3 which are pivoted tO the On its face it is furnished with the raised side-stri ps 111-14 and with the upwardly-turned lip 15. At its upper end 16 the metal of this plate is bent back on a plane parallel with but to the rear of the front plate, and through this portion at the point of juncture with the main portion of the plate is cut the cross slot 17. From the ends of this slot the metal of the front plate is concaved to form the two parallel convex ribs 18-18 On the back Ot the plate 12.
Between the ribs 18 on the back of the plate 12' is the sliding plate 19 having the finger 2O which engages the slot 1l in the arm 10 of the spring, the ribs serving as guides for this plate the upper end 21 whereof forms the orna mented top of the clip. To this upper end 2l is secured the transverse convex lip 22 the lower edge of which is ou the plane of the raised side-strips 14..
The tablet 23 may be of any usual material, being left blank for memoranda, orit may consist of several thin sheets printed with the days of the week or month. This tablet is of such size and thickness that it will lie between the sides 14, its lower end being inserted beneath the lip 15 while its upper end is held in place by sliding the plate 19 with the top 2l and the lip 22 downward, the lip 22 then eX- tending over the upper end of the tablet.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Ina clip, the combination with a. front plate pivotally supported having raised edges and an upwardlyturned lip at its lower end, of a plate vertically movable between guides at the Irear Ot' said front plate, a transverse downwardly-extending lip on said movable plate, and a tablet secured under said upper and lower lips, as described.
2. The combination with the back-plate 6 having the side-plates 7 7, the spring 9, having the slotted arm 10, secured to the back plate, and the front plate 12 having the side plates 13-13 pivoted to the plates 7 7, the lip 15, the raised sides 14C-14, the ribs 18 extending from the back, the upper end 16 and the slot 17 cut through the same, of the plate 19 extending through the slot 17 and movable between the ribs 18 and provided with the end 21 and transverse-lip 22, and a tablet adapted to be contained between the sides 14. and to be held by the lips l5 and 22, as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
CHARLES BALL.
