STAND FOR TABLETS OR CALENDARS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,635, dated August 5, 1890. Application filed December 16, 1889- Serial No. 333,941. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRED M. TURCK,:1. citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stands for Tablets or Calendars, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and serviceable construction of tablet or calendarstand orholder which can be made at small cost; also, to provide the stand with means for permitting a book or pack of tablet or calendar leaves to be held open and in a flat condition.

To the attainment of the foregoing and other useful ends my invention consists in matters hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a blank from which the stand can be formed. Fig. 2 represents in perspective the blank bent to partially form the stand. Fig. 3 shows in perspective the completed stand with a set of memoranda or calendar leaves held thereon. Fig. 4 represents on a largerseale a horizontal section taken through the back of the stand and the leaves thereon at a point to showoneof the staples by which the leaves are attached to said back. Fig. 5 represents the staple of Fig. I prior to bending its ends.

In Fig. l, A indicates the blank,which can be either of sheet metal or card-imard, but preferablythc latter. In said figure the dotted lines 1 1 z? 3 3 indicate lines along which the blank is to be bent, while the full lines I 4 denote linesof separation. The blank may therefore be said to be divided by said lines into the followingparts, to wit: the main rectangular body portion a, which is to form the back of the stand, the side flaps or wings a. a and a a which are to form the sides of the stand, and the narrow edge portion a, which is to form a ledge along the lowcrportion of the stand. \Vhere the blank is cut from card-board, it will preferably be scored along the dotted lines, so as to permit it to be readily bent along such lines,while on the other hand it will be cut through along the lines 4 4. In order to form a complete stand from said blank, I bend back the wings a, as in Fig. 2, and bend forward the marginal portion a along line 9, so as to bring it at or about at right angles to the body portion a, as in Fig. II, also bending back the wings (1 so that they shall .be brought against the wings a. I then secure each wing it to one oi the wings a by staples or other suitable fasteners 1 it being observed that in forming the blank I find it convenient to out therein suitable openings for the legs of the staples or fasteners. liy such arrangement, therefore, the portion (A of the'blank forms the back of the stand, the wings (1' and a form the sides of the stand, and the portion forms a. flange or l'orwardly-projecting ledge along the lower portion or base of the holder.

The leaves are attached to the back of the stand by any desired number of bowed or archedstaples l),whieh have their legsinserted through the back and bent down upon the rear side thereof. The staples Dare desirably shouldered at the points where their arched body portions are prolonged to form the legs, so that the legs can be inserted through the back (I up to said shoulders. The principal feat urc ol' importance, however, involved in the part or ledge a is that it holds,strengthens, and connects the wings or flaps (1 with the back or body of the calendar-stand and holds them rigidly at right angles thereto.

\Yhat I claim as my invention is l. A stand comprising a body portion a and side flaps or wings a a, formed from a single piece, said side flaps or wings being bent at an angle to the said body portion, so that one edge of each oi". said flaps or wings will be in position to support said stand, the plane in which said edges lie being at less than a right angle to said body portion,whereby said body portion will stand in a tilted position, substantially as set forth.

2. A stand comprising a body portion a and two sets of side flaps or wings a uand (1 oF, formed from a single pieee, said side flaps or wings being bent and secured together at an angle to said body portion and arranged to support said stand by one edge of each of said ilaps or wings, substantially as described.
