UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

' PLAT-FILING CABINET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
vented certain new and useful Improvements in Plat-Filing Cabinets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of this invention is to, provide a cabinet, especially constructed to 'hold maps, charts, plats and the like in a pendant position, in the manner permitting the map or chart being readily removed and replaced when not in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cabinet of this general character, of a simple and inexpensive nature, and of a light, compact and durable construction, which shall be capable of holding a plat, map, or the like in such a condition that the cabinet.
With these and other objects in view, the presentinvention consists in the combinaion and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and finally pointed out in the appended claims, it .being further understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the, scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views:
Figure 1, shows a perspective view of a cabinet embodying our invention, disclosing the arrangement of the holding members.
one of the holding members, disclosing the same in a flat unbent condition.
Fig. 3, shows an enlarged detached detail of one of the holding members with a portion of a map secured thereto.
Fig. 4, shows a central sectional viewtion to which is hinged shown each rail has an same will not be creased while held in the F1g. 2, 1s an enlarged detached detail of I Patented Feb. 27, 191 *7.
Application filed September 8, 1914. Serial No. 860,706.
In our present invention we provide a cabinetarranged for-the safe and convenient keeping of plats, maps, photographs, drawings,-and the like, in a .manner permitting a holder and its connected map being remaps, the holding members being numerically or alphabetically arranged.
In the drawings,,1 indicates the bottom, 2 the front, 3 the ends, and 4 the back of a rectangular cabinet embodying our invenat p 5.
Secured tothe ends 3, in parallel spaced relation are the two similar rails a; As upstanding flange 6, of double thickness, and a securing edge 7,
this construction being best shown in Fig. 4. I
These rails are preferably made of sheet metal.
Slidably held upon these rails are a plurality of similar U-shaped holding members 9, which are preferably made of sheet I metal and bent U-shaped to provide the face 10, which has the window openings 11, and the edge entering openings 00. In addition, each U-shaped holding member is provided with the apertures 6 intermediate of the ends, through which the fastening members 14, pass that ar employed to hold the map, chart, or plat to the holder.
In Figs. 6 and 7, we-have shown a crosssectional view of two holding members. In these drawings the holding members are arranged to receive but a single plat. If it is desired, of course, two or more plats may be held within the groove of each holder.
Each plat to be secured to a holder is provided with three apertures a', as'shown in Fig. 5, where a plat P, is shown.
The means employed to hold a plat to the holder are ordinary paper fasteners, such as the McGill paper fasteners, which after being inserted within the openings have their ends bent to prevent casual displacement.
In Fig. 2, we have shown a sheet metal holding member provided with the central line '1), upon which the member is bent to provide a U-shaped receiving device. The plats'P, are provided with names which are preferably so.placed that they come below the window openings 11.
As shown in Fig. 1, the lid 5, is provided with the holding flanges 20, below which is removably held an index 21, and this index is made to include numbers or letters which are repeated upon the holding members 9,
so that in selecting prevent the holding members slipping ofl and falling to the bottom of the case. As shown, the openings m are located near the ends of the member and these openings are arranged in sets of two opposite one another, insuring the U-shaped member being held ap proximately at a right angle to the flanges.
It is of course understood that cabinets embodying our invention are made in Various sizes. a r
The holding members, while being described as made of sheet metal, may if desired be made of wooden strips provided with a slot or a solid wooden strip may be used, to which the maps are detachably secured.
From the foregoing it will be noticed that we provide a dust proof cabinet within 2 5 which are held in pendant position the maps, plats, or charts, these being removably secured to suitably held members slidably held upon suitable supporting rails.
If desired in place of the window openings 11, parallel flanges 12, may be stamped out from the holding members arranged to receive an index slip 13, as shown in Figs. 6 and 3.
Having thus described our said invention,
.5 what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A plat filing device of the character described, including in combination, a rectangular cabinet, a rail secured to each end of to said cabinet, each rail having an upstanding flange, a holding member made of sheet metal bent U-shaped and having apertures mamas intermediate of its ends, said U-shaped member having an edge-entering opening near each end, said openings being arranged in sets of two opposite one another for engagement with said flanges, whereby said U- shaped member is held approximately at a right angle to said flanges, and securing members passingthrough said apertures, as, and for the purpose set forth.
2. A plat filing device of the character described, including in combination, a rectangular cabinet, a rail secured to each end of said cabinet, each rail having an upstanding flange, and a holding member made of sheet metal bent lJ-shaped having an edge-entering opening near each end, said openings being arranged in sets of two opposite one another for engagement with said flanges, whereby said U-shaped member is held approximately at a right angle to said flanges.
3. A plat filing device of the character described, including in combination, a rectangular cabinet, a rail secured to each end of said cabinet, each rail having an upstanding flange, a holding member made of sheet metal bent U-shaped and having apertures intermediate of its ends, said U-shaped member having an edge-entering opening near each end, said openings being arranged in sets of two opposite one another for engagement with said flanges, whereby said U- shaped member is held approximately at a right angle to said flanges, and securing members passing through said apertures, as, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
