To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, .loi-IN Davin DUNFoRD ltlon'rriiun, a subject of the King of England, residing at Newport, Monmouth, England, have invented a new and useful Filing Device, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to liling devices, and has for its principal object to provide a novel means for filing away copies of bills of lading, invoices, statements or other papers, so that they may be readily accessible for reference.

A further object of the invention is to provide an improved iile in the form of a pair of wires or rods which may be suitably supported in position for the reception of the papers, and which when filled may be readily removed for storage.

fr still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this nat-ure in which the tiling wires or rods, together with the papers thereon, may be placed within a suitable cover or case and filed away in the form of a book.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a supporting ineans for holding the file until the latter is filled, and to arrange the same in connection with perforating and other devices for convenience in use.

`With these and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size and minor details of the structure may be made without departing` from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a filing device con structed and arranged in accordance with the invention, showing the same supported in position within a suitable cabinet. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the support detached. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the filing wires or rods as arranged within a cover or casing. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of the same showing the manner in which the papers may be assembled in the form of a book.

ln carrying out the invention, a suitable casing 1() is preferably employed, the bottom 11 of the casing being forwardly eX- tended for convenience in filling out the bills of lading, invoices, or the like, while the back l2 of the casing is arranged for the reception of the filing device and the support. rit the rear of the base plate is a platform 13 on which is mounted a perforating device lil, so that the papers may be perforated for convenience in placing on the filing wires or rods.

Secured within the upper portion of the back 12 is a plate 15 which is provided with ltwo pairs of vertical flanges 16, the flanges being slightly spaced from each other, and being preferably formed integral with said plate Between the 'sets of flanges are arranged hooks 1T which may be of any de.- sired construction, and which may be formed integral with the plate or as separate niembers attached to said plate in any suitable manner.

The filing device is formed of a strip of heavy wire, the central portion of which is bent to form a cross bar 20. At the ends of the cross bar the wire is bent outward at a right angle to form an arm 21, and thence is rebent to form a second arm 22, parallel with the first, the two arms 21 and 22 forming a U-shaped clip. 22 the wire is bent at a right angle to form an arm 23 and thence is bent to form the paper supporting rods 24e, while the eXtreme ends are bent upward in a direction parallel with the arms 23 and are threaded as indicated at 25.

This device is mounted on the supporter 15, the cross bar 2O fitting in the bills of the hooks 17 and the arms 23 extending between the ribs or flanges 16 and resting against the face of the base plate, so that the wire supporting rods 24 will be held outward from the back plate, the rods being preferably so supported that their outer ends are slightly lower than their inner ends.

When a paper is to be placed on the lile, the clerk slightly folds the papers in two for the purpose of forming a slight crease at the center of the width of the paper. This creased line is placed in alinement with a mark, such as as on a normally vertical plate 23, which is hinged to a normally horizontal plate 29 carried by the member 13,

At the end of the arm there being a spring 30 in this connection in order that the plate 28 may be automatically returned to initial position after each operation. The plate 28 carries a pair of male dies 3l which are arranged to register with female dies 32 formed in the plate 29, so that when the plate 2S is turned down to horizontal position, the sheet of paper will be punched at two points equilistant from the center of the plate and spaced from each other a distance equal to the distance between the paper carrying rods 24. The paper may then be slipped over the ends 25 of the file and moved backward on the rods 24. After the file has been filled, it is merely necessary to lift the same from the support 2land insert a new filing device or paper carrier.

This filing device may be hung on the wall or in places where they are readily accessible for reference, but it is preferred to inclose each within a suitable cover, so that a complete lile will be in the form of a book. The book cover or casing comprises a pair of cover boards 35, 36 which are connected by a flexible back 37, the back being preferably formed of two flexibly connected sections for convenience in placing al tiling device in position, and the upper of these sections has openings 38 for the passage of the threaded ends of the wires or rods. To the inner face of the back is secured a metallic strip 4i) bent outward at the center to form a pocket for the reception of the bar 20, and arms 2l of the file, and the curved loop which is formed between the arms 2l and 22 will rest against the uppermost edge of this bar or strip 40. The ends of the wire or rod having been passed through the openings 3S, suitable nuts 42 are applied to the threaded portions thereof and after the nuts have been turned up tight, the filing device will be firmly locked in place, while all of the papers are readily accessible for reference.

There the slips of paper on the filing device refer to transactions extending over a long period, such, for instance, as a number of months, the different months may be separated from each other by suitable divi sion boards or the like.

I claim l. A filing device comprising a wire frame centrally bent to form a cross bar, and a plurality of parallel arms, the wire being further bent to form a pair of parallel filing rods having upturned terminals, and a support having hooks for receiving the base, and vertical flanges for engaging the arms to thereby prevent lateral play.

A filing device comprising a wire frame bent to form a cross bar, and a. plurality of parallel arms, the wire being further bent to fo 1m a plurality of filing rods having npturned terminals, and a support comprising a base plate, a pair of sets of flanges, each set being arranged for the reception of one of the arms, and hooks carried by the base plate and arranged to receive the cross bar.

3. ln a ling device, a cover member comprising a back and cover boards, the bacl; being provided with a pair of openings, a strip secured to the back, and a paper receiving file detachable from the cover, said file comprising a base member having a plurality of spaced arms and bent to form a pair of parallel filing rods having upturned and threaded terminals, the arms being arranged to engage the strip, and the terminals to pass tln'ough the openings` in the back, and nuts for engaging the threaded terminals of the rods to thereby confine the file within the cover.

l. A filing device comprising a wire frame bent to form a base and a pair of parallel U-shaped clips at the terminals of the base, said clips merging into parallel arms and terminating in end portions extending approximately at right angles therefrom and a support for engagement with the base.
