To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FLOYD A. GARRISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Periodical-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to the class of racks and rests and more particularly to a holder or rack adapted to be used in connec' tion with the filing of magazines or other periodicals.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a periodical rack or holder of such novel and peculiar construction as to have filed or supported thereupon a number of magazines or other periodicals in the order in which they are published or issued, thus enabling future reference to any particular magazine to be made without inconvenience or loss of time to the person referring thereto. 1

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is capable of being quickly and expeditiously expanded or enlarged, thereby permitting a greater number of magazines to .be su pended therefrom than would ordinarily be the case, were the device made incapable of enlargement.

A further object of the invention is to provide a periodical rack or holder upon which magazines and other books are supported in such a manner as to enable reference thereto or reading therefrom without detaching the book or in any other Way altering or operating the holder.

With the above and various other objects in view, the invention consists essentially in the provision of a two-part rack adapted to be attached to and supported by any suitable structure, one part or section of which may he slid upon the other, thereby enlarging or expanding the rack as desired.

Certain other features of construction, together with the combination and arrangement of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claim must be reasonably considered in determining the advantages and novel features of this invention.

In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote sections, and Fig. 1 is a similar view of the fastening elements.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, the numeral 1 designates one portion or section of the rack or holder, upon which is slidably mounted the other section 2, each of which has formed integral therewith and upon its upper edge a tongue 3, bent to form a hook by means of which the holder is supported or suspended upon a cord, wire or other element (not shown).

The section 1 is constructed so as to provide an upper arm a and a lower arm 5, the latter arm having a head or enlargement 6 formed integral therewith and upon. one extremity thereof, the purpose of which will hereinafter fully appear.

While the section 2 is of substantially the same shape and size as the section 1, it having an upper arm 7 and a lower arm 8, in detail, however, it is materially different, as the edges of the arm 7 are bent so as to form guides 9 between or within which the upper arm 4 of the section 1 is fitted, while the lower arm 8 has formed upon its inner extremity a pair of lips 10 bent to form a second guide within which the lower arm is fitted.

By the above construction, lateral adjust-- ment or enlargement of the holder is permitted, as the sections 1 and 2 are capable of sliding one upon the other throughout the entire length of the arm, as contact between the head 6 and the lips 10 limits such adjustment and prevents entire separation of the two sections.

A plurality of links 11 are disposed upon the lower arms 5 and 8 of the two sections, each of which is preferably composed of a single strand of wire, one end of which is bent to form a loop 12 through which the said arms pass, while the other end is bent to form a hook 13 by means of which the hooks 14 of a suitable fastening member 15 are secured.

The fastening member 15 comprises a hook shaped member 16, pointed in order ings, that by merely laterally adjusting that the binding or cover 17 of a periodical or magazine may be pierced and entered for suspending the same therefrom. A coil 18 is formed upon this member 16 to which the hooks 14: are loosely connected through the medium of a coil 19 formed therefrom.

By securing, as above set forth, one fastening member near the upper and another near the lOWQl edge of a magazine or periodical, and securing the hooks 13 and 14, it will be seen the Same may be supported or suspended in such a manner as to be readily referred to, should occasion demand; that by disposing a holder both above and below the hook, any number of the latter may be supported or filed according to the number of links provided upon the arms.

It will be seen from the above, taken in connection With the accompanying drawthe holder, an increased number of period1- cals may be filed; that by piercing the binding or cover of a book and hooking the fastoning member to the links as above described, is all that is required in the filing of said books or books: and that access may be had to any book either for reference or reading Without detaching the same from its file.

1 Attention is also called to the fact that a device of this character is not only simple in construction but reliable and eflicient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.

It is thought from the foregoing that the advantages and novel features of this invention will be readily comprehended.

I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and Copies of this patent may be obtained for in the arrangement and combination of the several parts, provided such changes fall Within the scope of the subjoined claim.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A periodical holder comprising a longitudinally extensible bracket composed of two independent sections arranged for slid-. ing movement one upon the other to define a space, each oi? the said sections being substantially U-shaped and arranged with their connecting portions remote, tongues formed integrally with and upon each of the said sections to form a means of suspension for the holder, an enlargement formed upon one arm of one of the said sections, an enlargement formed upon the extremity of one of the arms "of the other of the said sections, the enlarged portion of the said last mentioned arm being curved laterally to overlap the arm first mentioned, said overlapping portion being adapted to our brace said first mentioned arm to form a guide therefor, the said overlapping portion being further adapted to engage the said enlargement of the first mentioned arm to limit "sliding movement of the holder section, and parallel guide flanges formed upon the other of the arms of the said last mentioned section to engage the other arm of the said first mentioned section to maintain the said sections in parallel relation, the connecting portion of the respective sections servinp as abutments limiting movement of the periodical engaging means hung to suspend from the bracket. 7
