Description
'C. 1. BROWN. NOTE BOOK ANDYHOLDER FOR SAME.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 19. m2.
I 1 1 5 2,702 Patented Sept. 7, 1915.

no'rnfnook ann HOLDER non Sim.
ritavoa.
To all whom it may con oern Be it known that l, CLARK J. Brown, a
citizen ofthe. United States, and a resident of Petersburg, in the county of Dinwiddie and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Note- Books and Holders for the Same, of which the following is a specification, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in notebooks and holders for thesame, and comprises two. still board covers which are loosely connected by means of two similar spring wire holders which permit the book covers to be folded back Ashaped, so that the book will stand upright: and the primary object of my invention, is to provide a notebook of a simple and inexpensive nature and of a compact and durable construction, arranged so that new leaves can beeasily inserted. r
With these and other objects in view, the
present invention consists in the combiaa tion and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and finally pointed out in the appended claims, itbeing further understood that changesin the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims, not departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure" 1, shows an edge view of a notebook and holder constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2, shows an enlarged detached detail of oneof the holders. Fig. 3, shows a sectional view through the notebook, which is shown as closed. Fig. 4, shows the method of holding the book while in use. Fig. 5, shows an inner face view of the back cover with parts removed.
In my present invention I provide a notebook which is so constructed that the book can be folded back and held A-shaped, enabling the notes being easily read.
In carrying out the aim of my invention, I provide a stiil back cover 1,,having two apertures 2 near one edge, as indicated in Fig. 5, which are reinforced by means of the eyelets 3. Held below one of the flanges of each eyelet, in the manner shown in Figs. 3 and 5, is a terminal eye 4, forming part of a spring wire holder, two such holders being used in my invention. Extending Specification of Letters Patent.

from the terminal eye 4, is a base stem, 5, having an offset shoulder .6, intermediate of its ends, the stem being continued at rightanglesqin an end section 7, from which extends an Leshaped hook, 8, ending in the point 9 normally held within the connected securingfeyelet, as is shown in Fig.3. It will be noticed that the member 7, and the end 10 of the hook extend in parallel spaced relation. 1 These holders aremade of spring w1're.-
' Loosely held upon the hook extension, is
a sti-iftop cover 12, while held between the covers, 1 and 12, are the loose leaves 13. As shown in Fig.4, the coversl and 12 may be held in; divergent spaced relation so that the book may stand on the ends of the co* ers with itsleaves in an almost upright position, enabling the notes being easily seen.
In order to prevent thebacks slipping outward, as might be the case upon a polished desk surface, I use a holder. in Fig. 1, I have shown .a holder comprising the stifi cardboard members 14: and :2l,swhich are held V-shaped by means of a holder comprising a sheet metal member 15, having its ends 16, recurved to form suitable pin sleeves, engaging the shoulders 17, of a suitable fclip. Each clip includes a loop 18, while extending from the shoulders 17, are
the stems 19,, ending in the curved ears 20.
The book covers, land 12, or the holder members 14 and 21, are arranged to be clampedbetweenthe loops 18 and the stem l9. These stems are held in spring pressed condition. The holder comprising the members 1a and 21, shown in Fig. 1, are intended to be used where notebooks are employed, having pliable covers. Wherestift covers are used, these holding members are not necessary, and the spring clips are then secured to the lower edges of the stiff book covers in the manner shown in Fig. 4. l/Vhile I have described the connecting member 15, as being made of sheet metal, the same can be made of pliable material, such as a tape.
A notebook constructed according to my invention, will lie perfectly flat on a deskor 1 table. Owing to the fact that the leaf holders are made of spring wire, the leaves can be easily removed and new ones substituted. The stiff covers further serve as a support for the tablet while transcribing notes. F urther the front cover can be snugly folded back against the back cover for convenience in holding the notebook in the hand Where that is necessary to take notes while stand- V United States Letters Patent is:
