Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 19, 1917.
Application filed July 31, 1916. Serial No. 112,357.
To all coir am it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED M. BLANCHARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bill-Folds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has as its object to provide a bill fold and memorandum card pocket of novel design and construction and possessing numerous advantages not to be found in articles of this class now in general use.
It is one aim of the invention to provide a bill fold so constructed that when the same is withdrawn from the pocket there will be no likelihood of the bills being lost, the bills in their properly folded condition being at all times securely held within the fold in such manner as to prevent their relative disarrangement and yet to permit of the ready selection and withdrawal of a bill of any desired denomination.
Another aim of the invention is to provide an article of this class so constructed that any number of bills in properly folded condition may be arranged within the fold and securely held in place.
Another aim of the invention is to provide an article of this class which will serve also as a pocket for a celluloid or similar memorandum card, the card being housed in such manner as to insure against obliteration of the memoranda thereon which is liable when such cards are carried loose in the coat pocket.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the article embodying the present invention and the manner in which the bills held thereby may be manipulated to provide for selection of a bill of the desired. denomination;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the article alone;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on a line passing through the bill retaining band.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
The article embodying the present invention includes a relatively stiff back 1 and a relatively stifi' front 2, the said front and back being united by lines ofstitching as in- 'dicated at 3 along their lateral edges and their lower edges. While it is preferable that this portion of the article be manufactured from leather and stitched, it will be understood that any other suitable material may be employed for its manufacture and that the front and back may be secured together at their said edges in any desired manner other than by a line of stitching. The front and back form between them a pocket l designed to receive a memorandum card 5 which may be of celluloid or any other suitable material, and in order to permit of ready removal of the card from the pocket the upper edges of the front and back are cut away as at 6.
In order that a number of bills may be held firmly in flat condition against the back 1 of the article, an elastic strap 7 is provided and this strap extends transversely of the said back about midway between the upper and lower ends thereof and has its ends turned in and fitted between the lateral edges of the back and front as indicated at 8, the lines of stitching 3 passing through the inserted ends of the strap and also through the strap near the folds thereof. By securing the ends of the strap 7 in the manner stated, the article can be more readily and cheaply manufactured than would be possible if the ends of the strap were secured in some other manner and inasmuch as the united edges of the front and back 1 and 2 are held firmly closed by the lines of stitching, the inturned or inserted ends of the strap will be frictionally held as well as being held by the stitching.
From the foregoing description and from an inspection of Fig. 1 of the drawings, it will be understood that any desired number of bills in proper folded condition may be arranged beneath the strap and between the same and the outer face of the back 1 and that the upper ends of the folded bills may be turned down so as to permit of the selection of the desired bill, the withdrawal of the bill from the article being 1gclrtzlomplished without disturbing the other The body of the device embodying the present invention may be formed from any material suitable for the purpose, rigid or semi-flexible, and in several pieces or integral throughout, and if the back and front are formed separate, they may be united in portions passed about the lateral edges of 10 any desired manner and, if desired, provided the said back'and inserted between the lat- With a covering of any suitable character. eral edges of the back and front, and lines of Having thus described the invention, stitching uniting the said lateral edges of What is claimed as new is: the back and front, the said lines of stitch- In an article of the class described, a relaing passing also through the inserted ends 15 tively stifl back, a relatively stiff front, an of the strap. elastic strap extending transversely of the In testimony whereof I aifiX my signature. outer face of the back and having its end FRED M.
