7 Claims. i
the securing means and construction of the back for the book, loose leaves and the like, will be concealed thereby providing my device with a desired feature at the same time making it of aesthetic appeal.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a device of this type which will have an opadue rear or bottom sheet, flexible at least at its inner margin, the back of the binder being formed from said flexible portion of the rear including a novel, simple, efcient means to secure said transparent top thereto and providing said concealing means for the inner construction of the device and its securing means.
Further objects of this invention will be apparent as the specification of the same proceeds or willbe pointed out therein.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification and accompanying the same:
Fig. 1 is a plan View of a preferred embodiment of my invention, and
Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof7 on a larger scale, the section being taken on the line 2 2 of Figl 1; f
Fig. 3 is a sectional fragmentary and diagrammatic view of a modification, and
Fig. 4 is a similar view of another modification.
Referring now to the drawings more in detail by characters of reference, the numeral Il)V ini dicates the preferred embodiment of my invention, in general, being a cover or binder for loose leaf books or other similar articles.
It is composed of two main elements, an opaque, preferably flexible, rear member or cover sheet II, and a front or top transparent cover or sheet I2.
In the preferred embodiment shown in Figs. l and 2 the rear sheet II is continued at its inner end in several folds, generally indicated by the numeral I3, which jointly with appropriate portions of the transparentY top I2 and other parts and connecting devices will form the back of the binder or book cover Ill.
The preferred arrangement of the folds I3 in the back of the device will be formed by first an upwardly turned portion or fold I4, then a downward one I5, the two having the bend I6 between them. The material of the rear sheet II then is continued in an upward bend II and an upward innermost fold I8 whereupon the same is turned horizontally forming a top flange I9. The top sheet I2 of my device preferably will be made of flexible but resilient transparent material, like an appropriate plastic, many of which are well known in this art.
The inner marginal end thereof will be turned downwardly into a fold 20 which will be inserted between the two inner fold members I5 and I3 of the rear sheet II, after which all the mentioned folds and the downwardly turned marginal inner end 20 of the top sheet will be secured together by any appropriate means.
It will be seen that in this simple manner I will provide a cover or binder for books and the like which will have a transparent top wherethrough the top page of the book, or loose leaves, or the like, inserted into my novel binder and cover will be shown, may be observed, or read to great advantage and convenience, at` the same time being novel and attractive.
However, all the mechanism and possibly securing means at the back I3 of the book, or other article within my binder or cover, will be concealed by the opaque forward top ange I9 of the rear sheet;
In the preferred embodimentof Figs. l and 2, I show my binder or cover as employed for loose leaves and I indicate at 2| the loose leaf pages threaded on a ring 22, which, as usual in such .1.
devices, may be open and further pages threaded on it or removed therefrom as is well known in this art.
The various parts of the back I3 may be secured together as has been mentioned by any appropriate means, in the embodiment shown rivets 23 being indicated for this purpose which also may be used to secure the loose leaf rings and their usual base 24 on the back I3 of the binder or cover.
In Fig. 3 I sho-w a modification of my device in which the rear cover here also indicated by the numeral I I will simply have an upward bend 26 at its inner end 25 continued in a forward covering flange 2'I similarly arranged and for the same purpose as the opaque flange I9 was indicated in the preferred embodiment of Figs. 1
and 2.
The transparent top I2 here also will have a downward rear margin 20 simply folded rdiattened on the upward bend or fold 26 in the opaque rear cover, and a specifically prepared back 28 will be secured over the parts 26 and 28 by any appropriate means, as it is well known in the bookbinding art, the back 28 preferably being in the form of a curved solid rigid strip or'bar as usual.
In Fig. 4 another modification of my device is indicated wherein the opaque rear cover II yis continued in similar bends or folds I4, I5 and I8 as has been described in the preferred modification of Fig. 1 and is terminated by the concealing upper flange I9. The transparentl top I2 again will have a similar downward bend or fold and the mentioned bends or folds of the rear cover, and the downward ange 28 of the transparent top, will be secured together by any appropriate means, and in this manner a simple but stiff back will be formed for my cover or binder for a book, or any other appropriate object, wherein the inner margin of the book or vother article with its possible securing means will be concealed while the top of the cover or binder .will be transparent.
One element in said securing means may consist ina row of stitches 29 between the upper ends of the two inner folds l5 and I8 of the opaque rear sheet I'I passing through the upper end of the downward flange 20 of the transparent top i2 and in this manner securing the parts together with means which will be invisible to the outside, the ,outermost eld I4 of the rear cover being then vsecured thereon by any appropriate means if `desired..
A It is to be 'understood that such concealed securing stitches may be employed at the top of the back of other modifications of my invention, as they are indicated at 29 .in Fig. 2.
Also, if desired, my device may be made without the concealing flange or flap I9, the top of the same then having a clear attractive transparent appearance, particularly if the inner mechanism observable therethrough is attractive,
'like gold plated rings and the like.
What I claim as new and want to protect by Letters Patent of the United States, is: 1. A binder or cover for books, magazines, loose leaf sheets and the like, comprising, incombination, a rear sheet having a flexible inner marginal portion, upwardly standing folds formed from said inner margin thereof, offering an upward opening therebetween, a final lateral narrow ange at the upper end of the innermost fold, a top sheet for the device, the inner marginal portion thereof being folded downwardly and inserted into said upward opening in the folds of the rear sheet, and means to secure together the vertical folds thus formed of the rear and the top thereby forming the back of the device.
2. In a device, as set forth in claim 1, said top being of transparent material, said inner marginal portion and the final flange of said rear sheet being of opaque material.
3. In a device, as set forth in claim 1, said inner marginal portion and the nal ange of said rear sheet being of opaque material, said top being of stiff but resilient flexible and transparent material.
4. In a device, as set forth in claim 1, a horizontal row of stitches provided between the tops of the inner vertical folds of the folds in the back and the top of the downward ange of the upper sheet folded therebetween.
5. A binder or cover for books, magazines, loose leaf sheets and the like, comprising, in com,- bination, a rear sheet having a flexible inner marginal portion, upwardly standing folds formed from said inner margin thereof, offering an upward opening therebetween, a top sheet for the device, the inner marginal portion thereof being folded downwardly and inserted into said upward opening in the folds of the rear sheet, and means to secure together the vertical folds thus formed of the rear and the top thereby forming the back of the device.
6. In a device, as set forth in claim 5, said top being of transparent material.
7. In a device, as set forth in claim 5, said top being of transparent material, said inner marginal portion and the folds of said rear sheet being of opaque material.
