5, of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Pressed-Gut,

Raised, or Embossed Corner-Pieces for Bags; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and'to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The present invention relates, generally, to improvements in traveling bags, suitcases, and the like; and, this invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel form and construction of traveling bag, suit-case, or the like, comprising a main body of leather or other suitable material, and provided at its corners, and if desired, also along its various marginal edge-portions with edge-members, said corners and edgemembers being independent of and separate from the main body of the bag, suit-case, or the like, and having their main body-portions formed with pressed-out, raised, or embossed portions, providing with the body of 'the bag, suit-case, or the like, and with the parts thereof, suitable pockets orspaces for the reception and arrangement therein of suitable reinforcing material, said pressed-out, raised, or embossed portions of the corner-pieces or edge-members being bounded by depressedvmarginal flange-like elements or portionsfor securing the cornerpiecesl or edge-members in position by means of stitching or sewing through the said'iiiargnal flange-like elements or portions and the rearwardly located body-portions of the bag, suit-case, or the like.

rlhe principal object of the present invention is to provide in connection with the body of a bag, suit-case, or the like, made of leather or other suitable material, cornerpieces or edge-members made independent of and separate from the body of the bag, suit-case, or the like, and provided with outwardly extending pressed-out, raised, or embossed body-portions, bounded by depressed marginal lflange-like elements o-r portions,

through'which the sewing-stitches are made closely to, or approximately so, the marginal raised and rounded parts of said pressed-out, raised, 0r embossed portions, to provide a thread-protecting and safety- 'means for the stitching or` sewing, so as not to expose the latter to wear, chafng, or becoming broken, and thereby preventing or reducing to a minimum the possibility of `the corner-pieces or edge-members working loose land becoming unsightly.v

The present invention has for its further object to provide a novel and simple body of leather or analogous material forbags, suit-cases, and other bodies, having sewcd thereto independent and separate cornerpieces or edge-members formedk with pressed-out, raised, or embossed main bodyportions, with a view of economizing in 'the leather or analogous material of the main body of the bag, suit-case, or the like; also greatly reducing the cost of manufacture; and furthermore providing a much stronger and greatly strengthened and reinforced body for bags, suit-cases, and the like; and one, -the general appearance 'of which is greatly enhanced.

Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.

With the various objects of the present invention in view, the saidV invention consists, primarily, in the novel combined body and independently made corner-pieces therefor, the latter being provided with pressedout, raised, or embossed body-portions for stiffening and vstrengthening purposes, with thread-protecting portions, and with sewing flanges; and, the invention consists, furtheriiiore, inthe novel arrangements andcombinations of the various devices and parts,` as well `as in the details of .the construction of the said parts, all of which Will be more fully described inthe following specification, and then finally embodied'in Y the clauses of the claim which are appended to and whichform an essential part of the said specification. i

The inventionis clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but while in the said drawings I have illustrated mypresent invention as applied to the body. of a leather traveling bag, the fact remains that the invention is applicable to all kinds of bodies, and to the bodies of all styles and iio all kinds of bags, as well as to suit-cases, and the like.

ln the said drawings, Figure 1 represents one style of bag, the bag-body of which has attached thereto by sewing, corner-pieces having pressed-out, raised, or 'embossed bodies and depressed sewing flanges, as well as thread or sewing-protecting portions, all made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary face-view of one of the corner-portions of a bag, shown in a liattened or straightened out condition, provided with a reinforcing corner-piece, and showing one embodiment of the principles of the present invention, and said view illustrating in connect-ion therewith, portions of thereinforcing filler, backings, and other parts em ployed in connection with the said bag-body. Fig.'3 is a horizontal sectional representation of the various parts illustrated in said Fig. y2, said section being taken on line 3-3 in said Fig. 2, and showing the pocket-like portion of the corner-piece provided with a plurality of reinforcing layers or fillers; and F ig. i is a similar sectional representation of the same parts, the pocket-like portion of the corner-piece, in this instance, being provided with but a single reinforcing layer. Fig. 5 is a bottom view of the bag represented in said Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a bag provided with pressed-out, raised, or embossed edge-mem bers made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention, and made in the form of combined corner-pieces and edge-members extending along the gusset-ends and sides of the bag-body; and Fig. Z is a fragmentary perspective view of a bag-body provided with slightly modified forms or reinforcing members for a bagbody in the form of combined corner-pieces and edge-members extending along the gusset-ends 0f the bag-body. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a bag provided with independent corner-pieces embodying the principles of the present invention, but illustrating a modified method, from that represented in Fig. 1, of securing the cornerpieces in their respective locations at the corners of the bag. Fig. 9 is a fragmentary vertical sectional representation, taken on line 9-'9 in said Fig. 1; Fig. 10 is a similar sectional representation, taken on line 10-10 in Fig. 8; and Fig. 11 is .a similar fragmentary vertical sectional representation, showing a slightly modified arrangement of the parts represented in said Fig. 10, said Figs. 9, 10, and 11 being made on a more or less exaggerated scale. Fig. 12 is a perspective view of still another style of bag provided with corner-pieces embodying the principles of and attached to the body of the bag in the manner of the present invention; and Fig. 13 is a perspective view of one of the detached corner-pieces, the main body of which is made with the pressed-out, raised, or embossed portion.

Similar characters of reference are ein-- ployed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates thev body of a bag which may be made of leather, or any other suitable material, and which may be made of two main pieces, as indicated in Figs. 1, 6, 7 and 8 of the drawings, said pieces being stitched together, as at 2, at the gusset-ends of the bag; or, the body may be made as represented in Fig. 12, in which case the gusset-ends and sides of the bag-body are stitched together along their marginal edges 3, as at As illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the various sides and gusset-ends of the said bag-bodies, represented more particularly in said Figs. 1, 8 and 12 of the drawings, are turned inwardly at their lower marginal edge-portions, as at 5, and are suitably secured in any manner to a bottom 6.

The corner-portions of the bag-body proper may be retained, as indicated at 7 in Figs. 2, 3 and 4 of the drawings; or, if desired, the said corner-portions of the bagl body may be cut away, in conformity to the corner-pieces, substantially as indicated at 8 in Figs. 9, 10 and 11 of the drawings. ln like manner, the lower edge-portions of the sides and gusset-ends of the bag-body may be retained, s0 that the pressed-out, raised, or embossed edge-members may be attached directly over said edge-portions of the bagbody, `in the manner of the corner-pieces in said Figs. 2, 3 and 4L, or the said marginal edge-portions of the sides and gusset-ends of the bag-body may be cut away, in the manner of the corner-pieces in said Figs. 9, 10 and 11. lt will thus be evident, that when the bag-body proper is made with such cut-away or omitted corner-p0rtions and marginal edge-portions, there will be a great saving in leather; and, furthermore, the cut-away corner-portions of the bagbody proper may be used for making pressed-out, raised, or embossed cornerpieces which can be employed in the manufacture of the smaller sizes of bags. and in fact may be used, if desired, in the form of fiat corner-pieces to be secured to the usual forms of bag-bodies now in ordinary use.

2, 3, 4l, 9 and 12, the corners 10 are placed in position, the stitching or sewing 9 being made through the flange-like elements 12, close to the rounded connecting elements or portions 14, and through the bag-body 1, and the usual filler or fillers 15, and inner lining 16. Within the pocket-like portion of the corner-piece 10, back of the pressedout, raised, or embossed body-portion 11,

'and in front of the corner-portion of the bag-body 1, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, there may be a plurality of fillers or reinforcing members 17, of card-board or the like, or there may be a single ller or reinforcing member 18, as indicated in Fig. 4; or, when the corner-portion of the body 1 has been cut away, as represented in Fig. 9 of the` drawings, there may be a suitable arrangement of card-board or analogous fillers or reinforcing members 19 and 20, which are arranged in substantially the manner represented in said Fig. 9. Instead of placing the corner-piece upon the bag-body 1 in the manner herein-above described, so that the flange-like element 12 will be located upon the outer face-portions of the body 1, as shown in said Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, 9 and 12 of the drawings, the flange-like element 12 may extend into the cut-away portion of the bagbody and located back of said body, as shown in Figs. 8, 10 and 11 of the drawings, in which case the marginal portions of the body 1 may be folded upon and around the flange-like element in a manner, as indicated at 21 in Fig. 10, or it may be folded as at 22, and as shown in Fig. 11, the stitching or sewing 9 through thesaid parts being as shown in said Figs. 8, 10 and 11. vThe arrangement of the fillers 15, 16, 19 and 20, as will be noticed from said Figs. 10 and 11, is practically the same as that shown in said Fig. 9. As illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings, the combined corner-piece and edgemember 23 comprises the pressed-out, raised, or embossed side-members 24, corner-pieces 241, and end-members 25, which are respectively bounded by the rounded thread-protecting portions 26, 27 and 28, and the respective depressed and flange- like members 29, 30 and 31. In the construction represented in said Fig.V 7 the combined reinforcing and thread-protecting corner-piece and edge-member 23 comprises a pair of end pressed-out, raised, ,or embossed corner-portions 32 and a connecting pressed-out, raised,

or embossed end-member 33, which are re.- v

spectively bounded by the rounded threadprotecting portions`34 and 35 and the respective depressed and flange- like members 36 and 37. In otherV respects, these combined f corner-pieces and edge- members 23 and 23 are made the same as the previously described corner-pieces 10, and they are used with the same members of the bag and are attached to the bag-body by means ofthe stitching or sewing 9 in precisely the same manner as described in connection with the construction illustrated in said Figs. 1, 2, 3, a', 5, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 of the drawings.

From the foregoing descriptionY of the present invention it will'be seen that I have provided a `means which, while it greatly Y strengthens and reinforces the corners, well as other parts of the bag, and the stitching or sewing being made, in practice, through the flange-like members and close to the round portions, is protected against wear and chafng, so that the stitching or sewing can not become accidentally cut or worn through, and thereby providethe bagbody with unsightly and loose corner-pieces or combined corner-pieces and edge-members, as will be clearly evident.

Vhile in the above, I have described my present invention as applied to the leather bodies of traveling bags of the various kinds, it will be understood, that the invention is also applicable to other Vsuitably shaped bodies, such as suit-cases and the like, and the said bodies may also be made of any other suitable material. The invention may also be readily applied to other classes of exact arrangements and combinations of the said devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

I claim 1. A bag or case comprising a body, and an edge-member separate from said body, said edge-member having an outwardly extending pressed-out, raised, or embossed body-portion, bounded by an abrupt off-set and a depressed marginal flange-like element, said oH-set providing a thread-protecting element connecting said flange-like element With said pressed-out, raised, or embossed body-portion, and stitching through said fiange-like element located in close proximity to said thread-protecting element for attaching said edge-member to the body of the bag.

2. A bag or case comprising a body, and an edge-member separate from said body, said edge-member having an outwardly ex'- tending pressed-out, raised7 or embossed body-portion, bounded 'by an abrupt off-set and a depressed marginal flange-like element, said off-,set providing a thread-protecting element connecting said flange-like element with said pressed-out, raised, or embossed body-portion, stitching through said iiange-like element located in close proximity to said thread-protecting element for attaching said edge-member to the body of the bag, the body of the lbag having a lining, and a reinforcing filler located in the pocket-like portion formed by the pressed-out, raised, or embossed body-portion of said edge-member.

8. A corner-piece adapted to be attached to the body of a bag or case, said cornerpiece having an outwardly extending pressed-out, raised, orembossed body-portion, bounded by an abrupt o-set and a depressed marginal flange-like element, said oit-set providing a thread-protecting element connecting said flange-like element With said pressed-out, raised, 0r embossed body-portion.
