My invention relates to holders for articles. Holders embodying my invention are particularly suitable for, although in no way limited to, use in connection with an article of adornment 5 such as a handerchief which is placed in the breast pocket of a garment witha portion protruding, and one object of my invention is to provide a holder which will maintain such an article in a neatly folded condition and with a 10 selected amount protruding from the pocket.

Another object of my invention is to provide a holderof the type described which includes a compartment for receiving a picture, identification card, or the like. 15 A further object of my invention is to provide a holder of the type described which shall be attractive in appearance, durable, and easy to manufacture. Other objects and characteristic features of n my invention will appear as the description proceeds.

,I shall describe several forms of holders embodying my invention, and shall then point out the novel features thereof in claims.

As waspointed out hereinbefore, a holder embodying my invention'is intended primarily for 4 and 5 are sectional views taken on the lines a use for maintaining an article of adornment, such asa handkerchief which is placed in the breast pocket of a garment, in a neatly folded condition and with a selected amount protruding from the pocket, and, in general, the holder comprises a body portion which, when the holder is in use, is placed in the pocket with its lower end resting on the bottom of the pocket, and which is provided with suitable means for securing the handkerchief to the holder in such manher that the handkerchief will be maintained in any positionto which it has been previously folded, and at the elevation in the pocket selected by the user. The holder may assume a variety of forms; and in the form illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6, inclusive, the body portion is indicated by the reference character I, and the attaching means are indicated by the reference characters 2 and 3. The body portion I may be made of any suitable material, but will preferably be made of a non-metallic flexible material which has suillcient stiffness to remain in an'upright position when placed in a garment pocket in the intended manner, but which will bend intermediate its endsto conform to the general shape the pocket assumes when the garment is being worn. Some materials which may, for example, be used are heavy paper or thin cardboard, leather, a fabric material to which some stiffening has been added, or the like, or any combination of such materials. In the embodiment illustrated, the body portion consists of two layers or plies l and 5 of leather fastened together at their side and bottom-edges by a suitable adhesive in a manner to form a compartment '6 between the two layers, the back layer preferably being made somewhat shorter than the front layer to provide more ready access to the compartment 6, and for a further purpose which will appear presently. It will be understood, of course, that the two layers may be secured together in other ways than by means of an adhesive, and in case the compartment 6 is not wanted, the two plies may be secured together over their entire areas. The body portion will preferably have an ornamental shape, the particular shape shownbeing substantially crest shaped. I

The holding or attaching portions 2 and 3 are located at the opposite sides of the body portion at its upper end, and are made integral with the front layer or ply 4. To cause the attaching portions to bend'at the desired locations. notches I, are preferably formed in the opposite sides of the attaching portions adjacent the points where they join the body portion. These 'notches, however, are not essential to my invention, and may, if desired, be replaced by any equivalent means for causing the attaching portions to bend at the desired locations, or may be omitted altogether.

For the purpose of retaining the attaching portions in engagement with the handkerchief in a manner to secure the holder to and to simultaneously retain the handkerchief in a neatly folded condition, a non-elastic metallic stiffener 8 is provided. It is preferable that this stiffener should be removable in order to permit it to be readily replaced if it breaks due to successive bending of the attaching portions, and to this end pockets 9 are formed in the attaching portions by bending portions of the material back onto themselves and stitching or gluing them together at their outer edges. Thestiffener is preferably of the proper length to fit snugly within these pockets at its ends, and may be inserted into, the pockets by bending its ends substantially at right angles to its central portion at approximately the locations ,which fall opposite the notches I when the stiffener is in place, bending the attaching portions forwardly at right angles to the body portion, sliding the bent ends of the stiffener into the pockets 9, and then bending the attaching portions with the stiffener in place back to the positionsin which the stiffener is flat. If desired, longitudinal depressions It] may be formed in the ends and central portion of the stiffener in the manner shown to cause the stiffener to bend in the general region of the notches without causing it to always bend at the same.

can be quickly replaced by a new stiffener. It should be pointed out, however, that while I prefer to secure the stiffener to the holder in the manner just described, it may, if desired, be fastened to the holder in any other convenient manner, as bygluing it to the back of the outer ply e, or tacking it fast by means of thread or thelike, or the back ply 5 may be made longer than is'shown, and the stiffener may be glued or sewed fast between the two plies.

The compartment 6 may be used as a receptacle for a picture. identification card, or the like, and to enable the card to be seen without removing it from the compartment, a window ll may be provided in the front ply 4. Furthermore, this window may be closed by a transparent protecting member such as a piece l2 of celluloid or the like which may be secured between the front and back plies 4 and 5 when these plies are fastened together. The picture, card or the like may be inserted into the compartment at its upper end, and in the drawings a picture I3 is shown in place in the compartment, it being noted that this picture is clearly visible through the window ll and transparent protecting member i2.

In utilizing the holder, a handkerchief which is designated by the reference character M in the drawings, is first folded in the desired shape, and the attaching portions 2 and 3 are then bent over in a manner to grip the handkerchief and maintain it in a folded condition as shown in Fig. 6. The holder with the handkerchief in place is next inserted into the garment pocket in the manner shown in Fig. 1 with the bottom thereof resting on the bottom of the pocket, and it will be seen, therefore, that the handkerchief will then be held in a fixed position in the garment pocket. The amount of the handkerchief that protrudes may be regulated by varying the position in which the holderis attached to the handkerchief.

Referring now to Fig. '7, the holder in the form here shown is identical with that shown in the preceding views except for the means for securing the holder to the handkerchief, which means comprise two straps l6 and I1 which are formed integrally with one of the plies of the body portion, and which are provided at their free ends with cooperating male and female portions Wu and Nb of a snap fastenen, In using this form of the holder the straps are bent around the handkerchief in thedesired position and the snap is then fastened. The handkerchief will then be held in place in a manner which will be readily understood from the foregoing description without further detailed description.

In the modification shown in Fig, 8, the means for securing the holder to the handkerchief comprises straps 20 and ii which are preferably formed integrally with one of the plies of the body portion, and one of which 20 is provided at its free end with a plurality of slots 22 which form tongues 23. The other strap 2! is provided at its free end with a hook portion 24 adapted to interlockingly engage with any of the slots 22 on the strap 28 when the straps are placed around a handkerchief in a manner to permit the holder to be adapted to different size handkerchiefs.

Referring now to Figs. 9, 10 and 11, in the form of holder here illustrated the body portion of the holder comprises two plies 25 and 26 of leather sewed together at their side'and bottom edges in a manner to form a compartment between the two plies, and the means for attaching the holder to a handkerchief or like article comprises a strap 21 which is sewed at its ends to the rear side of the back ply 26. The two plies are preferably rounded at their lower ends to conform to the general shape of the bottom of the pocket into which the holder is to be inserted, and the front ply is preferably made somewhat shorter than the back ply to provides-more ready access to the compartment formed between the two plies and to improve the appearance of the holder. The upper edges of both the front and back plies may have any suitable shapes which ,will tend to improve the appearance of the holder, and as shown they have centrally located . semicircular depressions 25a and 26a formed in the upper edges.

Inusing the holder the handkerchief or other article is first folded, and its lower end is then placed between the strap 2'! and the back ply 26, and the handkerchief is pulled downwardly to such a position that when the holder is inserted into the pocket, the handkerchief will be located at the desired elevation. To facilitate inserting the handkerchief between the strap and the back ply a stiffening member 28 which is. slightly longer than the distance between the points at which the strap is secured to the back ply may be inserted between the strap and the back ply and bent into a semi-U shape in such manner that the strap will bow away from the back ply in the manner causes considerable force advertising purposes,

The compartment between the two plies serves as an inner pocket and may be used as a receptacle for any desired article, as for example, a picture-or the like.

It should be pointed out that while the holder will usually be inserted into the garment pocket in theposition in which the handkerchief is disposed at theback of the pocket, the holder will function equally well when it is inserted into the pocket in the position in which the handkerchief is disposed at the front of the pocket. Referring now to Figs. 12 and i3, the'holder in the form here shown is adapted particularly for and the construction is such that it can be manufactured at a minimum cost; The holder is preferably made from heavy paper,

thin cardboard or fiberboard; although any other suitable material may be used, and comprises a lower or body portion 30 and an integral upper portion 3| provided with two vertically spaced slots 32 and 33 through which the folded handkerchief I4 is adapted to be inserted in the manner shown in Fig. 13. The lower end of the holder is preferably rounded to conform somewhat to the shape of the garment pocket into which the holder is to be inserted, and the holder may be given any overall shape desired. The upper portion 3| with itstwo slots 32 and 33 comprise the means for securing a handkerchief to the holder,- and in using the holder the handkerchief, after being insertedinto the slots, is moved downwardly or upwardly to such a position that when the holder is placed in a garment pocket the desired amount of the handkerchief will protrude. Any suitable advertising or printed matter may be placed on the body or top portion. For example, if the holder is used to advertise a laundry directions for using the holder together with the name of the laundry furnishing it, and such other information as may be desired may be placed on the holder.

Referring now to Figs. 14 and 15, the holder in the modified form here shown is constructed from a single piece 35 of suitable material such as paperor fiberboard, and comprises a body portion 36 provided adjacent its upper end with. a transversely extending slot 31, and with oppositely disposed bends 38 in line with the two laterally extending edges of the slot end of the body portion is offset from the remainder of the body portion, and the slot 31 is caused 'to'be in a plane which is disposed atan angle to the main part of the body portion. The holder also comprises an integral attaching portion 39 formed by providing a cut 40 in the piece 35 and making bends ll at the upper ends of the 14.- An integral tongue 421s provided on the upper or free end of the attaching portion, and this tongue cooperates with an opening 43 formed in the upper endof the body portion to hold the upper end of the body portion in its proper offset relation and to secure the upper end of the attaching portion to the body portion in a manner to cause it to maintain a handkerchief in place in the holder. The attaching portion 33 is then bent upwardly, and the tongue" is inserted into the opening 43, thus fastening the handkerchief in place and maintaining the upper end of the'body portion in the proper offset relation. Finally, the holder is inserted into the garment pocket in a manner which wi'l readily be understood from an inspection of Fig. l'of the drawings, and from the foregoing description.

Although I have herein shown and described insrted into the slot 31 in only a few forms of holders embodying my invenet a handkerchief which is placed in the pocket with a portion protruding, said holder comprising a body portion consisting of two piles of material secured together at their edges in a manner to form .a compartment for the reception ofa picture, card, or the like, a window formed in one picture, card or the like may be seen, and means for attaching the handkerchief to the body portion in a manner to maintain the handkerchief in a folded condition.

2. A holder for positioning in a garment pocket a handkerchief which is placed in the pocket with a portion protruding, said holder comprising a body portion consisting of two piles of material secured together at their edges in a manner to form a compartment for the reception. of a picture, card, or the like, a window formed in one ply through which the picture, card or the like may be seen, a transparent medium secured to one of said plies and closing said window, and means for attaching the handkerchief to the body portion in a manner to maintain it in a folded condition.

3. A holder for positioning in a garment pocket a handkerchief which is placed in the pocket with a comprising a body portion the lower endof which rests on the bottom of the pocket and which consists of two plies of relatively flexible material secured together in a manner to form a compartment between them, two attaching portions secured to said body portion and adapted to be bent around the handkerchief to maintain it in a folded condition and to secure it to the holder, and a stiffening member extending transversely of said body portion and secured to said attaching portions for maintaining them in any position to which they are bent.

A holder for positioning in a garment pocket a handkerchief which is placed in the pocket with a-portion protruding, said holder comprising a body portion of relatively'flexible material such as leather resting at its lower end on the of the pocket, and two straps secured to said body portion at its edges and encircling the handkerchief and provided at their ends with adjustable means for securing them together to secure the handkerchief to the holder in an adjusted position.

6. A holder for a handkerchief which is placed in the pocket with a portion protruding, said holder comprising a body portion of relatively flexible material such i v handkerchief, one of v at its free end with as leather resting at its lower end on the bottom of the pocket, and two straps secured to said body portion at its edges and encircling the said straps being provided a plurality of slots which form tongues and the other said strap being provided at its free end with a hook portion adapted to interlockingly engage with any of said tongues when the straps are encircling the handkerchiefto permit the holder to be adapted to different size handkerchiefs.

7. A holder for positioning in a garment pocket a handkerchief which is placed in the pocket with a portion protruding, said holder comprising a body portion of flexible material such as leather resting at its lower end on the bottom of the pocket, two flexible attaching portions secured to the opposite sides of said body portion and provided with pockets, and a metallic stiffening member inserted at its ends into said pockets and acting to maintain said attaching portions in any position to which they are bent to permit them to grip the handkerchief in a. manner to adjustably secure it to the holder in a predetermined folded condition.

A holder for positioning in a garment pocket a handkerchief which is placed in the pocket with a portion protruding, said holder comprising a body portion of relatively flexible material resting at its lower end on the bottom of the pocket, two attaching portions secured to said body portion at its opposite sides and adapted to at least partly encircle the handkerchief after it has been folded in the desired manner to secure the handkerchief to the holder and to maintain it in its prefolded condition, said attaching portions being adjustable to enablethe handkerchief to be gripped in different positions and to accommodate different folds and different sizes and types of handkerchiefs.
