((31. 24-3 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE the holder is located within the coat pocket the folded over portion lies between the exterior surface of the holder and the interior surface of the pocket. The top portion of the handkerchief projecting through the top opening, also projects through the coat pocket and is arranged in the desired manner. A strap is provided across the width of the holder and also secured to the edges thereof. The strap serves as an additional clamping arrangement whereby the lower portion of the handkerchief after being folded over is also tucked beneath the strap. The lower portion of a handkerchief is thus securely held between the strap and the exterior surface of one of the walls of the holder.

Background of the invention It is customary to insert a handkerchief into the breast pocket of mens coats. These handkerchiefs are folded so that one or more corners project out of the pocket. However, difliculties are encountered in maintaining the handkerchief within the pocket, in a prearranged manner. Thus, while carrying the coat and the inserted handkerchief, the latter may become displaced, and the desired folded arrangement may be altered. This holds particularly for cases when eyeglasses or holders therefor are also inserted into the breast pocket.

To overcome the preceding disadvantages, the invention provides a protective holder which may be carried within the breast pocket of mens jackets and which will retain a handkerchief, folded as desired, and exposed or projecting from the pocket in the required manner. The handkerchief, in accordance with the present invention, will retain its position in folded state, while the coat is being carried.

The protective holder, in accordance with the present invention, comprises essentially a flat-walled holder which is hollow and open at the upper and lower edges. The dimensions of the holder are adapted to correspond to those of the breast pocket. The handkerchief is inserted into this hollow holder, in the desired folded manner.

Since the flat-walled holder is open at the lower edge, the inserted handkerchief may extend past this lower edge, and may be folded over thislower edge. In this manner the position of the handkerchief is secured.

In a modified embodiment of the holder, in accordance with the present invention, a strap is provided near the lower opening of the holder. The lower end of the handkerchief drawn through the opening at the lower edge of the holder, may be inserted through this strap. The strap serves the purpose of securing the excess length of the inserted handkerchief, resulting from adjusting the handkerchief to the desired length within the breast pocket. With the aid of the strap, the excess length of ice the inserted handkerchief cannot introduce undesirable effects.

In a further embodiment of the invention, the handkerchief holder is provided with a slit situated near the lower edge of the holder and extending substantially the full width of the holder. With this arrangement the handkerchief can be drawn through the slit, and the end projecting from the slit may be bent or folded upward. On the other hand, the handkerchief may be drawn through the holder from the lower opening, and the corner of the drawn-through end of the handkerchief may be made to project through the slit. This corner is then retained properly within the fiat-walled holder.

The two upper edges of the two walls of the holder, do not have to coincide. Thus, the upper edges may be arranged so that one extends above the other. By causing the upper edge of one of the walls to project above the upper edge of the other wall, the holder may be adapted to different size pockets, and at the same time, not reveal the presence of the holder within the pocket.

The walls of the hollow holder, as well as the strap, may be made from the same or different material. In general, the protective holder may be produced from leather or synthetic material. The holder may also be made of material which is more or less transparent and may have its upper surface shaped in a predetermined manner. In order to permit the insertion of the handkerchief easily and readily, it is desirable that the ends of the seams securing the walls of the holder, extend somewhat below the upper edge of the holder. Thus, it is desirable that the seams due to sewing, gluing or thermal adhesion, be discontinued below the upper edge of the holder.

The inner surfaces of the walls, of the holder may also be serrated or knurled, to provide further means for securing and holding the inserted handkerchief in place, within the holder.

Summary of the invention A protective holder for retaining a folded handkerchief within an outer coat pocket comprising, in combination:

(a) A front wall and rear wall secured to each other so as to form a passage having openings at the upper and lower portion of said holder and adapted to retain a folded handkerchief with a portion of the same projecting at least from the upper opening and out of said coat pocket.

The novel features which are considered as characteristic for the invention are set forth in particular in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, both as to its construction and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will be best understood from the following description of specific embodiments when read in connection with the accompanying drawing.

Brief description of the drawing FIG. 1 is an elevational plan view of the protective holder, and shows the relationship between the fiat walls of the holder and the manner in which they are secured to each other; and

FIG. 2 is a partial elevational view of the protective holder, of FIG. 1, and shows another embodiment in which the securing strap is situated substantially above the lower edge of the holder.

Description of the preferred embodiments Referring to the drawing and in particular to FIG. 1, the protective holder has a front wall 1 and a rear wall 2. The securing strap 3 is located in the vicinity of the lowor edge of the holder, and extends along the width of the holder. These slits through which the handkerchief may be drawn in a modified application of the embodiment, may be located along the line 4, coinciding with the upper edge of the securing strap 3. The slit is present in one of the two fiat walls of the holder, and extends along the entire width of the holder near the lower portion thereof. The two

1 and 2 are secured to each other by the seams 5. As shown in the drawing, these seams cease somewhat below the upper edge of the holder in order to facilitate insertion of the handkerchief.

FIG. 2 shows another embodiment for the construction of the protective holder, in which the securing strap 3 is somewhat differently located. Thus, as shown in the drawing, the lower edge of the securing strap 3 is located above the lower edges of the holder. Furthermore, it is not necessary that the rear wall 2 extend somewhat above the front wall 1, as shown in FIG. 1. The upper edges of these two walls may completely coincide, as shown in FIG. 2. It will be understood that each of the elements described above, or two or more together, may also find a useful application in other types of handkerchief holders differing from the types described above.

While the invention has been illustrated and described as embodied in a handkerchief holder, it is not intended to be limited to the details shown, since various modifications and structural changes may be made Without departing in any way from the spirit of the present invention.

Without further analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of the present invention that others can by applying current knowledge readily adapt it for various applications without omitting features that, from the standpoint of prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this invention and, therefore, such adaptations should and are intended to be comprehended within the meaning and range of equivalence of the following claims.

What is claimed as new and desired to be protected by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. A protective holder for retaining a folded handkerchief within an outer coat pocket comprising, in combination, a front wall and a rear wall secured to each other so as to form a passage having openings at the upper and lower portion of said holder and adapted to retain a folded handkerchief with a portion of the same projecting at least from the upper opening and out of said coat pocket, the shape and dimensions of said front wall corresponding substantially to those of said rear wall; and non-elastic strap means located in the vicinity of the lower portion of said holder and secured to said holder for permitting the lower portion of said handkerchief to be folded and inserted between said strap and said holder.

2. A protective holder as defined in claim 1, wherein the upper corners of said holder are rounded.

A protective holder for retaining a folded handkerchief within an outer coat pocket, comprising, in combination, a front wall and a rear wall secured to each other so as to form a passage having openings at the upper and lower portion of said holder and adapted to retain a folded handkerchief with a portion of the same projecting at least from the upper opening and out of said coat pocket, the shape and dimensions of said front wall corresponding substantially to those of said rear Wall; and a nonelastic additional elongated wall located adjacent to said rear wall secured to opposite edges thereof for permitting the lower portion of said handkerchief to be folded and inserted between said additional elongated wall and said holder.

4. A protective holder as defined in claim 3 wherein one of said walls extends above the other one of said walls at the upper portion of said holder.

5. A protective holder for retaining a folded handkerchief within an outer coat pocket, comprising, in combination, a front wall and a rear wall secured to each other so as to form a passage having openings at the upper and lower portion of said holder and adapted to retain a folded handkerchief within a portion of the same projecting from the upper and lower openings of said holder, one of said walls of said holder having a slit located near the lower portion of said holder and extending substantially along the entire width of said holder whereby the handkerchief portion projecting from said upper opening is permitted to project out of said coat pocket and the handkerchief portion projecting from the lower opening is folded over and into said slit so as to maintain said handkerchief in a substantially fixed position relative to said holder.
