The invention relates to handkerchief holders generally, but more particularly to a holder adapted to receive a full size handerchief which has been pre-folded into the predetermined fold arrangement found most satisfactory to the individual user, and which is then removably inserted as a unit into the pocket of a coat or other garment worn.

The invention has among its objects the production of a holder of the kind described, that will be of extremely simple construction and correspondingly easy to use, relatively low in cost, neat and attractive in appearance, and otherwise satisfactory and efficient for use wherever deemed applicable.

One of the objects of the invention is to so construct a holder of the kind described, so that the same may be readily and easily inserted into and removed from the pocket of the garment without having any of its parts arrested in such movement by catching against any portion of the pocket, and wherein there will be no unsightly bulges visible from the exterior of the pocket due to use of such a device.

Another object of my invention is to so construct such a device so that a full size handkerchief may be positioned thereon in its pre-foldecl position, in an extremely thin and compact placement, so as to produce a pleasing and attractive appearance when worn.

A further object of my invention is to so construct such holder that the lowermost folded portion of the full size handkerchief will be received within a trough adjacent the bottom of the holder and be snugly held against the latter, without likelihood of an lateral shifting of the handkerchief relative to its placement on the holder, thus insuring a continued retention in the pocket in its desired and originally intended position.

A still further object of this invention is to so construct a holder of th kind described, that the lowermost edges of the handkerchief engaging means at the bottom and top of the holder, shall be directed inwardly toward the adjacent face of the holder, to thereby prevent such edges catching in the material of the pocket during its insertion thereinto or removal therefrom.

Many other objects and advantages of the construction of the device herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, as will be apparent from the disclosures herein given.

To this end, my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts herein shown and described, and the uses mentioned, as will be more clearly pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, wherein I have illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, A represents a pocket generally to be found on the upper left hand portlon of a mans coat, and many persons prefer to carry a handkerchief in this pocket. In order to make the appearance of such a handkerchief more pleasing, such a handkerchief is quite often folded in a predetermined manner to suit the wearers tastes, as with the plurality of points or corners all arranged uppermost. These corners may protrude and extend any preferred distance beyond the top of the pocket, of course.

When the handkerchief is simpl placed within the pocket, it soon becomes disarranged, especially if the wearer is active while wearing the coat, and the appearance is untidy, and hence objec; tionable.

To insure neatness and attractiveness of the handkerchief, and maintain it in constant position in the pocketeven though the wearer is active, I have provided a holder 'to form a unit with the handkerchief and whereby the latter in its full size is folded to the shape most tasteful to the wearer and removably positioned, on such a holder, so that the'entire unit may then be dropped into the pocket without any fuss or bother, and without the use of pins, hooks or any fastening means whatsoever, to maintain the unit in place, and whereupon the desired points or corners of the handkerchief will be displayed attra'ctively from above or beyond the top of the coat pocket.

Handkerchiefs of different materials, colors or designs may be interchangeably mounted on the holder, for use with the same or different coats, and the units thus formed may be easily and conveniently dropped into place in the coat pockets, and just as easily lifted therefrom when no longer needed, as will be obvious from the following description of its construction.

A backing member consisting of the plate I, of any suitably sturdy, light and flexible material, such as leather, Celluloid, fibre-board, and many other substances, may be employed, said member being of such a size that it will extend from the bottom of the pocket to adjacent its top, and of a, width slightly smaller than that of said pocket. This .member will thus be retained in its desired original position without shifting in the pocket, and will be supported by the bottom of the pocket. It will conform to the body shape of the wearer while so worn.

A groove, channel or trough 2 is provided across the bottom of said plate, this trough being somewhat U-shaped in cross-section longitudinally of the plate,,and having its opening toward the upper end. Although this trough may be formed sepa-. rately from the plate material, and afiixed thereto, it is shown as integral therewith, and there are side edge stops 3 to prevent lateral shifting of the handkerchief H when in the trough.

It is to be particularly noted that the lower portion of the trough 2 is rounded off or tapered toward the plate, or in other words, that this lower portion of the trough is directed inwardly and downwardly toward the opposed face of the plate. In this manner, it is possible to insert the plate in the pocket simply by letting it drop to the bottom of the latter, and without any likelihood of any sharply overhanging portions catching in the material of the pocket and preventing the intended simple operation of insertion; The rounded off lower edge permits of this free and easy operation.

A preferably flexible band 4 is arranged ad- J'acent the top of the plate I, one end being fixed at 5 to a side edge of the plate, and the length of said band being such that it is long enough to at least reach the opposite side edge of said plate, and if desired a snap fastener 6 the opposed face of the :plate and through which the handkerchief passes, as shown, this slot being substantially of the full Width of the plate, and substantially equal in length to the trough opening and with which it is in registry for the purpose described. For the same reason as that hereinbefore ascribed to the lower edge of the trough, the lower edge of the band 4 is also pref erably directed downwardly and. inwardly toward the opposed face of the plate.

Substantially the full area of the plate is used as a backing or support for the handkerchief, previously folded into the shape predetermined, and the trough and top band form registering openings for receiving the lower and upper portions of the pre-folded handkerchief, to hold the same snugly against the plate, this ample support enabling a minimum of thickness to result from folding the handkerchief and thus making for a compact and thin unit for easy and ready insertion into and removal from the pocket.-

There will be little chance of the handkerchief shifting from its pre-folded position either on the holder or in the pocket after placement on the holder, on account of the maximum backing and support for the handkerchief, and with a minimum of play of the holder in the pocket.

Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial changes may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my, invention; hence I do, not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, or uses mentioned, except as limited by the art to which this inventionappertains, or the claims hereunto appended.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a handkerchief display device, a flexible sturdy plate of a size to'be removably received and concealed within a garment pocket, a trough permanently. across the bottom of one face of said plate and open at its upper edge, the trough opening being narrower at its intermediate height than at its top or bottom, and a flexible band mounted on said plate and movable to and from said face of the latter that has said trough thereon, whereby the handkerchief may be prefolded and positioned flat against the full height of said plate with the trough receiving the bottom of said handkerchief and the band engaging across a portion of the latter spaced upwardly from said trough.

2. Ina retainer of the kind described for re movably positioning a pre-folded full sized hand:- kerchief in a garment pocket, a substantially flat flexible plate conformable to rounded body contours and adapted to be supported on the bottom of said pocket and extend to adjacent the top, a trough permanentlyacross the lower endofsaid plate and open along its upper edge, said trough being spaced closer to said plate at the lowermost portion than at an intermediate portion of the trough; and a flexible band having one end mounted on one side edge of the plate and the other end releasably engageable with saidjplate to form a slot therewith in registry with said trough, and whereby said pre-folded handkerchief may be superimposed on said plate with-its lower portion in said trough and with its upper portion in said slot, and with a portion of said handkerchief projecting beyond said slot for display.

3, In a retainer for holding a handkerchief pre-folded thereon forremovable placement in a garment pocket, a substantially flat plate of such size as to be supported on the bottom of said pocket and to extend to adjacent its top, a U-shaped element adjacent the bottom of said plate to form together therewith an upwardly directed trough extending across said plate, and a band mounted to extend across said plate adjacent its top and spaced from the opposed faceof the plate to define a slot, said band being; reduced in thickness along its lower edge, whereby the folded handkerchief may be placed against said plate with the lower portion of the hand,- kerchief within said trough and with its upper portion within said slot.
