FOLIO FOR BAND MUSIC.

Be it known that I, JAMES L. RorNs,

citizen of the United States, residing at Oil City, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folios for Band Music, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a folio for band music and more especially for the music of those bands which are generally termed brass bands, or any other band whose instrumental equipment is suitable for outdoorservice, which is usually rendered un'- der such conditions that the score or music must be held in a device termed the lyre lthat is carried by an instrument.

My folio is however well adapted for general band and orchestral service.

By means .of my improved folio for band music, I am enabled to attain a'number of desirable objects, which have not heretofore been attained, some of which objects are:

l. To provide a folio or carrying means for a number of sheets of band music. into and from which said sheets or any of them may be inserted and removed at will:

2. To provide a folio in which the sheets may be kept separate, retained in the desired order and arrangement and readily located: y

3. To provide a folio wherein the order, accessibility and exposure of each iece of music is such that the direct han ling of it is unnecessary and is eliminated:

4. To provide a folio or carrying means for band music in which the sheets of music which represent the various selections or numbers of a program may be arranged in the proper order, and so retained as long as that particular program is in service, and wherein rearrangements or substitutions may be made at will:

5. To provide a folio into which the sheets of music may be inserted and securely retained without in any way mutilatingor defacing them, wherein they will be fully protected from becoming `soiled and worn and from which they may be readily removed as desired and may be exchanged for other music or sold as desired:

point that it may he readily and compactly folded reversely so as to, place the outer faces of the covers in full contact with each other, thus adapting the folio to be readily insertableand securely retainable in the lyre or 'folio holder of the instrument.

The musicof nearly all lnarches, as well as other classes of music, for the use of those bands above designated, and more especially the score for each individual instrument thereof, `is printed upon one side of a sheet having dimensions of approximately seven inches by five inches, the whole of a selection being contained upon one sheet. l i

Heretofore the folios for such music have been objectionable in certain respects, the principal ones of which are:

l. That the sheets of musicy must be se cured therein in such a manner that/they could not be yremoved therefrom without mutilating them, hence revisions and substitutions `could not be readily made and they were not protected from wear and tear; or

2. The sheets were placed loosely in the folio and were liable to disarrangeinent, loss and to be-come soiled, worn and torn.

In this latter class of folios the sheets of music which compose the selections of a stated pro ram, if primarily arranged in the desire order, cannot remain so arranged, as each sheet must be transposed. to the rear of the next 'sheet in order-,to expose it to view, and because of this. the sheets are liable to disarran-gement. loss and wear.

Said objections are eliminated in my folio,

- and many additional objects and advantages are secured.

.The construction and arrangement Whereby I am enabled to embody my inventivek idea in a folio for band music, are clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which: 1

Fig. 3 is a face view of one of the duplex leaf members of my folio engaged by a clip by means of which I prefer to attach the leaf members to the cover structure of the folio.

Fig. 4 is a section taken longitudinally of the hinge section of my folio.

Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the attaching clip shown in Fig. 3, in the open position.

Fig. 6 is an end view of the hook end of said clip.

Fig. 7 is a side view of the clip in the closed position.

The construction and arrangement shown in said drawings is substantially as follows:

For the cover member of my folio, I employ a duplex structure comprising the two sections l, l, which, preferably are slightly a trifle longer and wider than the leaf members. Said cover sections are joined together adjacent one of their margins, permanently, by means of a hinge device 2., consisting preferably of a suitable fabric or like material of the required flexibility. Said hinge device is of such a nature as to flexibility that said covers may be folded reversely so that their outer faces may be placed in complete contact for the purpose of placing the folio inthe music holder of the instrument, as indicated in Fig. 2.

The leaf members of my folio are also dupleX structures composed of the two

3, 3, each of which sections comprises a pocket 3', 3', and consists of two sides or faces 4, 4, of transparent material, such as celluloid. Said two sides of each section are united adjacent to and throughout the eX- tent of three of their margins by means of a suitable binding 5 and a hinge piece 6 which piece also serves to unite the adjacent margins of the two

3, 3, thus forming what I term the duplex leaf members. 'Ihe fourth or remaining margin of said sides or faces 4 are not united, and may be freely separated or opened as shown or illustrated by the leaf members which are positioned adjacent the cover in Fig. 1. Said open` ing is for the insertion into said pocket of two sheets of music, 7 7, arranged back to back with their printed faces adjacent and clearly visible through said transparent sides 4, 4.

Said leaf members are secured through their respective hinge portions 6 to the hinge portion of the cover by means of either a removable cord C, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or by means of a removable, resilient, metallic clip, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.

Each duplex leaf member requires but one clip or other securing means to attach it to the cover, and this is true regardless of the number of'leaf members employed, as any number of them that are likely to be required may be secured in position by one securing device.

By an inspection of Figs. 5, 6 and 7, it will be noted that said clip, which constitutes the preferred means of securing said leaf members to said cover, comprises a shank 8 which is bent upon itself forming an open curve at one end and is extended to form a tongue 9: the other end of said clip is formed into a hook l0 for the engagement of the free end of said tongue, which, normally through its resiliency occupies the position sho-wn in Fig. 5. The central por tion of said tongue curves inwardly toward said shank, and when it is engaged by said hook 10 it normally occupies the position shown in Fig. 7 with its central portion in contact with said shank. However, intervening engaged material, such as that of the hinges 2 or 6 will cause said tongue to occupy or approach Ithe position shown in Fig. 4, but in all positions which it may be caused to assume because of a greater or less'amount of hinge material, it will bear firmly' thereon and retain said cover and said leaf members firmly in their proper relative positions.

lVhen it becomes desirable to remove leaf members from my folio or to add others thereto, it is only necessary to untie the cord C, or to disengage the tongue 9 from the hook 10, whereupon leaf members may be removed or added, after which a union of said cord or the reengagement of said tongue, as the case may be, will resecure the members of the folio in their respective relative positions.

The extreme flexibility of my folio at its hinge portion is one of the desirable and superior features, and one that is essential to a successful folio. The reason for this lies in the fact that, under some conditions which a band must play, as in marching for example, the folio must be carried in the lyre of the instrument, hence it is necessary that the folio be so constructed that it may be folded reversely with the outer faces of its cover sections in full contact with each other, so that the opposite, or outer faces of the leaves shall be parallel: if it were otherwise, the folio would not be securely retained by the lyre.

I claim the following:

l. A folio for band music comprising in combination, a duplex cove-r structure the two sections of which are united adjacent one of their margins by a hinge device of such nature that said sections may be folded thereon so as to place their outer faces into Contact with each other, duplex leaf members, the two sections of which are each composed of two sheets of transparent material, which two sheets are united adjacent. three of their respective edges to form a pocket for the reception of two sheets of music. said sections being spaced apart and united intermediate their juxtaposed edges by means of flexible material forming a centrally-positioned hinge for said leaf member,

and means engaging said cover structure and said leaf members at their respective hinge portions retaining them in their assembled order and relation, said means being disengageable at will for the removal or insertion of leaf members.

2. A folio for band music comprising in combination, a duplex cover structure the two sections of which are flexibly joined together adjacent one of their respective margins in such manner that said sections may be folded in either direction so that both their inner faces and outer faces may be placed in contact with each other with equal facility, duplex leaf members, the two sections of which are each composed of two sheets of transparent material, which two sheets are united adjacent three of their respective edges. to form a" pocket for the reception of two .sheets of music, 'said sections being spaced apart and united 'intermediate their juxtaposed edges by means of iexible material forming a centrally-positioned hinge for said leaf member, and means engaging said cover structure and said leaf members at their respective hinge portions retaining them in their assembled order and relation, said means being disengageable at will for the removal orinsertion of leaf members.

3. A folio for band music comprising in combination, a duplex cover structure the two sections of which are united adjacent one of their respective margins by means of an intermediate hinge device which is of such nature that said sections may be folded thereon so as to place either their inner faces or their outer faces into complete contact with each other, duplex leaf members, the two sections of which are each composed of two sheets of transparent material, which two sheets are united adjacent three of their respective edges to form a pocket for the reception of two sheets of music, said sections being spaced apartand united intermediate their juxtaposed edges by means of 'iexible material forming a centrally-positioned hinge for said leaf member, and means engaging said cover structure and said leaf members at their respective hinge portions retaining them in their assembled order and relation, said means being disengageable at will for the removal or insertion of leaf members.

5. A folio for band music comprising in combination, a duplex cover structure the two sections of which are flexibly joined together adjacent one of their respective' margins in such manner that said sections may be folded in either direction so that both their inner faces and outer faces may be placed in contact with each other with equal facility, duplex leaf members, each of the two sections of which are composed of two sheets of transparent material superposed upon each other and united adjacent three of their margins whereby each section forms a pocket for the reception of two sheets of music arranged back to back and the compositions thereon adjacent to and visible through the respective transparent sheets, said sections being.fleXibly united at their adjacent margins in such manner that they may be folded in either direction with equal facility, and means engaging said cover structure and said leaf members at their respective hinge portions retaining them in their assembled order and relation, said means being disengageable at will for the removal and insertion of leaf members.

6. A folio for band musiccomprising in combination, a duplex cover structure the two sections of which are unitedl adjacent one of their respective margins'by means of an intermediate hinge device which is of such nature that said sections may be folded thereon so as to place their inner faces or their outer. faces into complete contact with each other, duplex leaf members, each of the two sections of which are composed of two sheets of transparent material superposed upon each other and united adjacent three of their margins whereby each section forms a pocket for the reception of two sheets of music arranged back to back and the compositions thereon adjacent to and visible through the respective transparent sheets, said sections being flexibly united at their adjacent margins in such manner that they may be folded in either direction with equal facility, and means engaging said cover structure and said leaf members at their respective hinge portions retaining them in their assembled order and relation, said means being disengageable at will for the removal or insertion of leaf members.

7. A folio for band music comprising in llO combination, a duplex cover structure the two sections of which are united adjacent one of their margins by a hinge device of such nature that said sections may be folded thereon so as to place their outer faces into contact with each other, duplex leaf members the two sections of which are each composed of two sheets of transparent material superposed upon each other and united adjacent three oftheir edges to form a pocket for the reception of two sheets of music arranged back to back with the music thereon facing and visible through the respective transparent sheets, said sections being spaced apart and united by means of flexible material extending across said space and engaging the adjacent margins of the respective sections whereby a hinge is formed intermediate said sections, and means engaging said cover structure and said leaf members at their respective hinge portions retaining them in their assembled order and relation, said means being disengageable at will for the removal and insertion of leaf members.

8. A folio for band music comprising in combination, a duplex cover structure the two .sect-ions of which are flexibly joined together adjacent one of their respective margins in such manner that said sections may be folded in either direction so that both their inner faces and their outer faces maybe placed in contact with each other with equal facility, duplex leaf members the two sections of which are each composed of two sheets of transparent material superposed upon each other and united adjacent three of their edges to form a pocket for the reception of two sheets of music arranged back to back with the music thereon facing and visible through the respective transparent sheets, said sections being spaced apart and united by means of flexible material extending across said space and engaging the adjacent margins of the respective sections whereby a hinge is formed intermediate said sections, and means engaging said cover structure and said leaf members at their respective hinge portions retaining them in their assembled order and relation, said means being disengageable at will for the removal or insertion of leaf members.

9. A folio for band music comprising in combination, a duplex cover structure the two'sections of which are united adjacent one of their respective margins by means of an intermediate hinge device which is of such nature that said sections may be folded thereon so as to place either their inner faces or their outer faces into complete contact with each other, duplex leaf members the two sections of which are composed of two sheets of transparent material superposed upon each other and united adjacent three of their edges to form a pocket for the mesme reception of two sheets of music arranged back to back with the music thereon facing and visible through the respective transparent sheets, said sections being spaced apart and united by means of flexible ma.- terial extending across said space and engaging the adjacent margins of the respective sections whereby a hinge is formed intermediate said sections, and means engaging said cover structure and said leaf members at their respective hinge portions retaining them in their assembled order and relation, said means being disengageable at will for the removal and insertion of leaf members. f

10. A folio for band music comprising in combination, a duplex cover structure the two sections of which are united adjacent one of their margins by a hinge device of such a nature that said sections may be folded thereon so as to place their outer faces into contact with each other, duplex leaf members, the two sections of which are composed of two sheets of transparent material, which two sheets are united adjacent three of their respective edges to form a pocket for the reception of two sheets of music, said sections being spaced apart and united intermediate their juxtaposed edges by means of flexible material forming a centrally positioned hinge for said leaf member, and a single, flexible, disengageable element engaging said cover structure and said leaf members through their respective hinge portions whereby they are retalned in their desired arrangement and relation t0 each other.

A folio for band music comprising in combination, a duplex cover structure the two sections of which are flexibly joined together adjacent one of their respective margins in such a manner that Said sections may be folded in either direction so that both their inner faces and outer faces may be placed in contact with each other with equal facility, duplex leaf members, each of the two sections of which are composed of two sheets of transparent material superposed upon each other and united adjacent three of their margins whereby each section forms a pocket for the reception of two sheets of music arranged back to back and the compositions thereon adjacent to and visible through the respective transparent sheets, said sections being flexibly united at their adjacent margins in such manner that they may be folded in either direction with equal facility, and a single, fiexible, disengageable element engaging said cover structure and said leaf members through their respective hinge portions whereby they are retained in their desired arrangement and relation to each other.
