LOOSE LEAF BINDER Filed July 30, 1930 Arm/Mfrs Patented Feb. 16, 1932 narran 'strains PATENT erstes JUST'US LOUIS SOHLICHTNG, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS Loose LEAF Binnen Application filed July 30,
A, binder.
Another object is to provide an indiciaholding device which is so constructed as to permit it to be manufactured and incorporated in a bock easily and cheaply. f
@ther objects and advantages relate to the size, shape and arrangement of parts all as will more fully appear from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved binder.
Figure 2 is a sect-ion on line-2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an elevation, partially broken l; away, showing the back of the binder and the indicia retaining portion thereof.
Figure 4 is a section on line 4 4 of Figure 1.
My invention is adapted to be used with various types of loose leaf binders but for the purpose of explaining its operation I have here shown it as used with a well known type of split ring binders. Y
As here shown, the binder 1 has a back 2 l' .l and opposed covers 3 and 4. The back 2 comprises a metal back plate 5 having a central aperture 6 bordered by an outwardly oset rim 7. Y
At one end of the aperture 6 is provided in back plate 5 a slot 8 for a purpose hereinafter to be described.
A supplementary metal plate 9 is secured to the inner Jface of back plate 5 as by welding. v
On the inner face of plate 9 is adhesively secured a strip of cardboard 10. The rear face of back plate 5 is cover-ed with a cover-v ing material 11 such as leather (or canvas, such covering 11 being cutaway to expose the aperture 6 and slot 8. Y
The covering 11V extends outwardly Jfrom both edges of the back member 2 and has one end adhesively secured to the bookbinders board 12 of which cover 3 is formed, and has the'other end adhesively secured to the 1930. Serial No. 471,682.
bookbinders board 13 of which cover 4 is formed.
On the inner face of the cardboard member 10 is adhesively secured a covering material 14 of leather or other appropriate material. The covering 14 extends outwardly from both edges of baclr` member 2 and has one end adhesively secured to the inner sur-v iacev of the boolbinders board 12 and has the other' end adhesively secured to the inner surface of boolibinders board 13.
Bookbinders boards 12 and 18 are spaced from back member V2 so that flexible coverings'll and 14 function ashinges between covers 3 and 4 and back member 2.
On the inner face of back member 2 there is secured as by rivets, nonehere being shown, a spring back plate 15 having its longitudinaledges return-bent as shown at -aand -bto form opposed channels.
Aplate 16 having secured thereto a plurality, one only being shown, of' spacedhalf rings 17 has one longitudinal edge seated in channel -ZJ- and has its other longitudinal' edge seated between the heads of a plurality o'fdouble headed buttons 18, one only being shown.
A second plate 19 having secured thereto a plurality, one only being shown, oitl half rings 17 has one longitudinal edge seated in channel -aand has its other longitudinal edge seated between the heads of buttons 18.
rThe over-all width of plates 16 and 19 and the shank of buttons 18 is slightly greater than the distance between the channels fzand so that the resiliency of spring back plate 15 will releasably hold the plates 16 and 19 either in the raised or lowered position. f
When the plates 16 and 19 are in the lowered position, the ends of opposed half rings 17 and 20 will be in registration to form a pllfised ring upon which loose leaves may be When the plates 16 and 19 are in the raised position, the opposed half rings 17 and 20 will be spaced from each other to permit the withdrawal or insertion oit' loose leaves.
A cover plate 21 having its opposite longitudinal edges return bent, as shown at 0 and -d has such edges sprung' over the opposite longitudinal edges of spring back plate 15.
Cover plate 21 is provided with apertures 22 through which half rings 17 and 20 extend.
Slot 8 is provided so that an indicia carrying card 23 may be inserted therethrough and positioned between the outer surface of plate 9 and rim 7 of plate 5.
It Will be understood that although I have shown a particular type ot what is usually called a split ring binder, my invention may be used with binders of various types or With permanently bound books, if desired.
It will also be understood that certain changes in the number andrelation of parts may be made it desired Without departing` from the spirit of my invention for although I have shown and described a specific strueture and form and relation of parts as an exempliiication of an embodiment o1e my invention, I do not desire to restrict myself to the exact size, shape or relation of parts, as various changes may be made Within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A loose leaf binder comprising a back plate having an aperture therein, With an out-Wardly oifset rim, said back pla-te having' a slot therein at one end of the aperture adjacent the end rim section, a metal plate secured to the inner face of the back plate with the slotted portion of the bach plate spaced outwardly of said metal plate, the offset rim providing an indicia card-receiving pocket with the slot, substantially alined therewith, a'lexible cov ering having an opening therein exposing the back plate rim and slot, and means for securing loose leaves in the binder.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 22nd day ot July, 1930.
JUSTUS LOUIS SCIILICHTING.
