ADAM MIEDEN, OF DEADWOOD, CALIFORNIA.
POCKET MEMORANDUM-BOOK.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ADAM MIEDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Deadwood, in the county of Trinity and State of California, have invented a new and useful Pocket Memorandum-Book, of which the following is a specication.
The invention relates to improvements in memorandum books.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of memorandum books, and to equip the same with simple, durable and inexpensive means for holding writing material and writing implements and for securely retaining a memorandum book in the pocket of a garment.
A further object of the invention is to provide an eiiicient clip, adapted to be readily applied to the cover of a memorandum book, and capable of retaining itself in position on the same and of also presenting inner and outer engaging portions, located at the inner and outer faces of the cover so as to operate both interiorly and exteriorly thereof.
With theseand other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying dra-wings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a memorandum book equipped with clips, constructed in accordance with this invention, the book being open to show the inner engaging portions. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, the memorandum book being closed. Fig. 3 is a central longitudnal sectional view, the book being closed. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4, the lever being arranged for holding the inner portion of the clip out of engagement with theY tablet. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view on the line 6 6 of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of the clip of one of the covers. Fig. S is a similar view of the clip of the other cover. tablet holding clip. Figs. 11 and 12 are detail perspective views, illustrating other forms of the pocket engaging clip. Fig; 13 is a detail view of the lever for operating the tablet holding clip. Fig. 14 is a transverse sectional view, showing applied to a cover the clip illustrated in Fig. 10.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In Figs. 1 to 8 inclusive of the accompanying drawings in which is illustrated the preferred form of the invention, 1 designates a memorandum book of any preferred construction consisting of two flexibly connected covers 2 and 3. The cover 2, which forms a base or back for a tablet 4, is preferably equipped with a covering of flexible material, such as leather, cloth, or the like, and it is provided with a flexible. pocket 5 open at the outer end of the cover, and adapted to receive pencils, pens or similar writing implements, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive.
The cover 2 is equipped with a tabletholding clip, comprising an inner approXimately U-shaped tablet-engaging loop 6, outer pocket engaging tongues 7 and spring bends 8, connecting the tongues with the sides of the tablet holding loop. The inner t-ablet engaging loop is composed of spaced Asides and an outer connecting transverse portion, which is provided at opposite sides of the center with inwardly extending approXimately V-shaped bends 9, forming spaced gripping portions for overlapping and engaging the face of the tablet 4, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The spaced side portions of the U-shaped tablet-engaging loop are straight, and are located at t-he side edges of the leaves or sheets of the tablet and assist in retaining the tablet in proper position on the cover 2 of the memorandum book. The spring bends are connected with the inner ends of the sides of the tablet engaging loop by short straight attaching portions 10, which pierce the cover 2, the inner tablet engaging loop being located at the inner face of the cover 2, and the tongues being arranged at thel outer face of t-he same. The spring bends 8 are preferably concealed within or beneath the covering ofthe cover 2, but they may be arranged on the exterior of the same if desired. Each transverse spring bend consists of inner and outer straight transverse por- Patented Apr. 30, 1912.
tions 11 and 12, astraight intermediate connecting portion 13, and an outwardly extending arm lll. The straight connect-ing intermediate portion 13 connects the adjacent ends of the transverse portions 11 and 12, and the arms le, which are straight, cxtend outwardly from the said terminals of the portions 11 of the spring bends and oftset the inner ends of the tongue 7 from the plane of their outer engaging ends 15. 'Ihe tongues 7 are arranged at an angle to the plane of the cover 2, and they pierce the outer wall of the pocket 5 and engage the exterior of the same at spaced points and sub-divide the pocket into separate portions for holding pencils, fountain pens, etc. rlhe tongues, which are resilient, also yieldably maintain the outer wall of the pocket in engagementwith the writing implements and thereby securely hold the same in the subdivisions of the pocket 5. The terminals 15 of the resilient tongues are bent on themselves to 'form eyes to provide blunt ends to prevent the ends of the tongues from piercing the outer wall of the pocket. The angular spring bends support the inclined or angularly disposed tongues in proper position for engaging the flexible outer wall of the pocket, and they also operate to distribute the strain over a considerable portion of the steel wire, or other material of which the clip is constructed, whereby the durability of the clip is materially increased In order to facilitate placing the tablet il in the clip, the `memorandum book is equipped with a lever 1G, provided at one end with an integral pivot 17 and provided at the other end wit-h an operating arm 18 and having an eye 19, arranged adjacent to the operating arm and receiving` the transverse portion of the tablet engaging loop` and slidable on the same between the' V- shaped bends The pivot 17, which extends in the opposite direction from the operating arm 18, is suitably mounted in the cover 2, which is provided at one side of the leverwith a shoulder 2O,` arranged to permit the lever to swing slightly beyond the center, so that the resiliency of the tabletengaging clip will maintain the lever in engagement with the shoulder and 'thereby enable the lever to hold the clip in its open position until it is swung back beyond the center.
In Fig. 9 of the drawings, is illustrated a simpler form of the tablet and pencil holding clip, the inclined or angularly related tongues 21 being connected with the sides 2Q of the tablet engaging' loop by straight transverse portions Q3 and outwardly projecting arms Q4, short straight transverse attaching portions 23a being provided, In Fig. 10 is illustrated another form of tablet engaging clip in which the tablet engaging loop 25, t-he ltransverse connecting portions 26, the outwardly projecting arms 2T and the short straight attaching portions 26a are constructed similar tothe corresponding parts illustrated in Fig. 9. The clip of Fig. l0 is equipped with a pair of inclined or angularly disposed approximately U-shaped tongues 2S, spaced apart and having spaced side portions and adapted to sub-divide a pocket into live divisions for the reception of live different pencils or other writing implements. The pocket, however, may be divided into any number of subdivisions by employing a proper number of spaced inclined tongues.
In each form of the invention the tablet engaging clip retains itself on the cover of the memorandum book, and in addition thereto performs the double function of holding the tablet and retaining the writing implements in the pocket of the memorandum book. The other cover of the memorandum book is equipped with a clip consisting of an inner approximately rectangular resilient clamping loop 29 and an exterior jaw or tongue 30. The inner clamping loop, which has one end free, is adapted to hold a stamp book, cards and various other miscellaneous papers, and the exterior tongue or jaw is adaptedl to engage the fabric of the pocket of a garment to retain the memorandum book therein. The rectangular loop 29 has an exterior U-shaped clamping portion, and inner angular spring bends 81 consisting of spaced transverse portions 82 and 33, and a straight intermediate connecting portion 34e, arranged at right angles to the transverse portions 32 and 38. In practice the spring bends will be concealed within the covering of the cover 3, but this is not absolutely necessary. The spring bends are adapted to distribute the strain throughout a considerable portion of the steel wire, or
other material of the clip and increase the durability thereof. The inner transverse portion 33 is connected by a short attaching portion 35 with an approximately U- shaped loop 36, which supports the tongue or jaw 30. The attaching portion 35 pierces the cover 8 of the book, and it connects the inner and outer portions of the clip with each other. The U-shaped loop 36 is preferably arranged beneath the covering of the cover, and the tongue or jaw 30, which is formed by doubling the wire on itself, isinclined or angularly disposed and is con-A nected with the loop by an outwardly project-ing arm 37 and has an angularly bent terminal engaging portion 38. VThe outer side of the loop 36 is provided with a laterally projecting gripping device, adapted'to engage one of the side edges of the cover and consists of an outwardly extending transverse portion 39, a short longitudinal connecting portion 10, an inwardly extending transverse portion l1 and a longitudinal terminal portion 42, arranged in substantial parallelism wit-h the longitudinal connect* ing portion 40 and being of a length slightly in excess of the same. The gripping of the side edge of the cover 3 by the said laterally projecting gripping device assists in retaining t-he clip in proper position on the same. The clip retains itself in position on the cover and also performs the double function of engaging the pocket of a garment and holding miscellaneous articles.
In F ig. 11 of the drawings, is illustrated a clip diering slightly in form from the clip of the cover 3, the rectangular loop 43 being provided at t-he outer portion of the angular spring bends 44 with a short faste-ning portion 45, which is adapted to pierce the cover adjacent to the side edges thereof instead of near the central port-ion of the same. The fastening portion 45 is co-nnected with the outer side of the loop 43 with a short transverse connection portion 46, and the inner terminal of the angularly bent resilient connecting portion r44 is connected directly with the inner side of the U-shaped loop 47 which supports the pocket engaging jaw or tongue 48. The outer side of the loop 47 is provided with a cover engaging device 49, constructed-similar to thatheretofore described, and adapted to engage the side edge of the cover.
In Fig. l2 of the drawings, is illustrated a pocket engaging device consisting of a tongue 50L a supporting loop 51 and a cover engaging device 52, adapted to grip the side edge of the cover. The loop 5l, which is approximately U-shaped, is provided at the opposite side with an attaching device 53, having a short angularly bent portion 54 to pierce the cover and provided with a relatively small approximately V-shaped loop 55, connected wit-h the attaching portion 54 by a short transverse 'portion 56, and adapted to engage the opposite face of the cover. The form of clip shown in Fig. l2 is adapted to be applied to any memorandum book, when it is merely desired to equip the same with means for retaining the book in the pocket of a garment.
The clips with their inner and outer engaging portions when applied to the covers of a memorandum book' or analogous book are adapted to permit any one of the enga-ging portions to be manipulated with* out aHecting or disturbing the other engaging portions, or the articles held by the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l.
