Be it known that I, FRANK P. HARBAUGH, of Ghambersburg, in the county of Franklin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Book-Holder, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved book-holder, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical transverse section.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.

The object of my invent-ion is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and effective device for holding books in an open position at a suit able inclination for reading.

My invention consists in a base-piece pro vided with wire arms for holding the book at the required inclination and with a spring clamping device for holding the book in an open position, all as hereinafter more fully described.

In the base A, near opposite ends, are in- U serted the ends of the wire standards B, the

wires being bent into an approximately V shape, with the rear arm, a, of each standard bent at right angles and driven into the edge of the block, the forward arm, I), being bent outward at right angles, then downward at right angles and driven into the top of the block, and secured by a staple, 0. Midway be tween the standards B is secured a support, 0, for the back of the book, the said support consisting of a wire bent twice at right angles with the extremities of the wire, bent forward parallel with the top of the block A, then downward at right angles and driven into the block, said extremities being secured by staples d driven into the block.

Between the standards B and the support 0 are arranged the arms eof the bottom support D, the said support consisting of a wire bent twice at right angles, the two arms e thus formed being offset, each being bent twice at right angles, but in opposite directions, and the free extremities of the arms 6 being bent inward parallel to the inner portion of the arms a and driven into the rear edge of the block.

bowed outward and the supports 0 D are arranged to spring,'so that when an open book is placed upon the arms 6 of the support D,with the covers resting against the standards B, the leaves will be held in an open position by the horizontal part of the support D, and the book will be clamped between the said part of the support and the back support 0 and the standards 13.

My improved book-holder is particularly adapted to the use of copyists and musicians. It is also useful for holding books of reference.

Having thus described my inven.tion,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a book-holder, the combination, with the base A, provided with a bottom-support, D, substantially as shown, of the wire standards B, formed of a single piece of wire bent into an approximately V shape and secured at one end to the top of the base A and at the other end to the rear of said base, substantially as shown.

2. In a bool;-snpport, the co1nbination,with the base A, of the end uprights, B, formed of a single piece of wire bent upon itself and having horizontal extension at one end, having a downward]y-extending portion entering the top of said base A and an inwardly-projecting portion at the opposite end adapted to enter the rear of said base A, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

In a book-holder, the combination, with the base A, provided with the standards 13, said standards formed of asingle piece of wire bent into an approximately Vshape, having a horizontal portion bent at right angles and driven into the base A at the top thereof, its other end bent inwardly and driven into the base at the rear thereof, and staples c, for holding suclrends in place, of the back 0, formed of a single piece of wire having a vertical inverted-U-shaped portion and a horizontal portion having downwardlyprojecting ends entering the base A in the top thereof, and staples (Z, for holding such ends in position, substantially as herein shown and described.

4. As an improved article of manufacture, a book-holder composed of a base, A, having wire standards B, one end of said standards fastened to the top of said base A and the other end in the rear thereof, a wire back-support ar ranged centrallybetween the standards l3, said forming a retaining-ledge, said support disback-support formed of a single piece of wire posed between the standards B and at each to bent into an invertedU shape and provided side of the back-support 0, all arranged subwith extensionssecured to the top ofthebase A, stantially as and for the purpose described. andabottom-supportD,formedofasinglepiece FRANK P.
