UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK \V. PELSTER, OF JOHNSTOlVN, NEBRASKA.
COMBINED DISPLAY-HOOK AND PRICE-CARD HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,872, dated April '7, 1896.
Application filed May 25, 1895. Serial No. 550,651. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. PEL- STER, of J ohnstown, county of Brown, State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Combined Display-Hook and Price- Oard Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of display-hooks which are combined with price card or ticket holders and used by merchants and others for displaying goods and holding the ticket or card indicating the price of the goods; and the obj ect of the invention is to provide a device of this nature of a simple, inexpensive, and durable character, which shall afiord a secure means for holding the goods and the attached price-ticket, and which shall also be of such a construction as to be convenient for use.
The invention consists in a display-hook having clamping-arms adapted to clamp the goods to be displayed, one of said arms havin g projecting side portions arranged on opposite sides of and adapted to be guided on the other arm, the said projecting side portions being connected and braced by a clip adapted to hold a price card or ticket.
The invention also contemplates certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts whereby the device is made stronger and more convenient for use, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the claims.
In order that my improvements may be the better understood, I have illustrated in the accompanying drawings a combined displayhook and price-ticket holder constructed in accordance with my invention, in which draw- 1ngs Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, and Fig. 2 is an edge view showing the device in use.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
The device is constructed of a piece of springwire of proper size and strength, and in forming the device said wire is provided with a central elongated loop 1, forming the extremity of one of the clamping-arms, the wire at the ends of said loop being bent inwardly or toward one another, as indicated at 2, and
being then bent at right angles to form the inner clamping-arms 3, which are arranged parallel to each other and slightly spaced apart, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. At the upper ends of the inner clamping-arms 3 the wire is bent to form similar hooks 4, each formed of two strands of wire, the outside strands 5 being carried down parallel to the upper ends of the inner clamping-arms 3 and forming the upper ends of the outer clamping-arms, being bent forward, as indicated at 6, and downward, as indicated at 7, parallel to each other and in front of the plane of the inner clamping-arms 3.
The lower ends of the outer clamping-arms are bent inward or down, as seen at 8, under the ends of the elongated loop 1, and provided with loops 9 of greater width than the end portions of said elongated loop and adapted to bear elastically on the opposite sides thereof, as clearly seen in Fig. 1.
The vertical forward portions 7 of the outer clamping-arms are tied together by means of a clip 10, which may be conveniently formed of a piece of sheet metal, provided at its opposite sides with vertical pockets 11, formed therein by means of bends and adapted to receive the portions 7 of said outer clampingarms, and at its lower part the said clip 10 is provided with an upwardly-bent portion 12, extending transversely across it and forming an elastic clasp to receive and hold the price card or ticket 13, as seen in Fig. 2.
In operation the loops 1 and 9 at the lower ends of the inner and outer clamping-arms are pressed apart by pressure of the thumb and finger of the operator on the front face of the clip 10 and the rear sides of the underlying portions of the inner clamping-arms 3, which are at this point separated from the outer c amping-arms by reason of the forward bends in the latter, and said loops being separated the article 15 to be displayed is inserted between said loops and clamped securely thereby by the resiliency of the springwire of which the device is composed. The arms 8, being provided with independent loops 9, permit two separate articles to be clamped by the same device at one time. The pricecard 13 is now inserted in the clasp 12 and the device is suspended by engaging the hooks 4 with any convenient supporting device 14.
The device constructed as above described is exceedingly simple and inexpensive, and may be applied for supporting articles of any description which it may be desired to display. It is also very convenient for use, the construction being such that very slight pressure of the thumb and fingers on its opposite sides serves to separate the loops 1 and 9 to permit the insertion of the article to be displayed. Moreover, the arrangement of the price-card clip as above described afiords not merely a convenient means for securing the same in place, but also forms a simple brace or tie for connecting the outer clamping-arms together and causing them to move in unison, and also forms a convenient device to be engaged by the finger of the operator in separating the loops. The forward bends in the outer clamping-arms also serve to guide the inner and outer clamping-arms in their movements toward and from each other, and the hooks 4 are in the nature of springs tending to hold the loops 9 and 1 in engagement.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A device of the character described provided at its upper end with a hook and having two sets of clamping-arms, the lower ends of which are provided with loops adapted to engage and clamp an article to be displayed, one set of said clamping-arms being provided with forwardly-bent portions located on opposite sides of the arms of the other set and forming guides therefor, and a clip uniting said forwardly-bent portions, and provided with a clasp to receive and hold a price card or ticket, said clip consisting of a piece of sheet metal having its end portions bent around said forwardly-bent portions substan tially as set forth.
2. A device of the character described provided at its upper end with a hook and having two sets of spring clamping-arms provided with loops at their lower ends to engage and clamp an article to be displayed, the central portions of the clamping-arms of one set being bent forward, and a clip uniting the bent portions of said arms and hav-' ing a clasp to receive and hold a price card or ticket, substantially as set forth.
3. A device of the character described, provided at its upper end with a hook and having two sets of spring clamping-arms extending in parallel planes, the arms of one set be ing arranged inside those of the other set and provided with a single clamping-loop uniting them, and the arms of the other set having central forwardly-bent portions and being each provided with a clamping-loop arranged under the single clamping-loop of the firstmentioned arms, and a clip connecting the forwardly-bent portions of the last-mentioned set of arms and provided with a clasp to receive and hold a price card or ticket, substantially as set forth.
