BAG-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,747, dated April 21, 1891.

Application filed October 2, 1890.

To aZZ whom, it may concern- Be it known that we, ORREN G. NOsKER and PETER E. \VHITSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Sheldon, in the county of Iroquois, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag- I Iolders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices designed primarily for holding paper bags and like articles in grocery and confectionary stores, but will be found applicable to other uses.

It has for its object, among others,to provide a simple and cheap device which will hold a large or small quantity of bags and permit of the ready removal of one without disturbing the others. The ends of the bags arefpreferably folded to provide for the more ready removal of one without disturbing the others.

The device may be provided with a base by which it may be supported upon a counter or shelf, or it may be hung upon a hook or other support. It may be used perpendicularly or horizontally. One supporting; or back piece may be provided with one or more sets of clamps.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 is a face view of one form of our improved device. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig. is a vertical transverse section through a portion of the device, on an enlarged scale.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.

Referring now to the details of the draw in gs by letter,A designates a supporting-piece, preferably of wood, and may be of any desired size or shape. In Figs. 1 and 2 we have shown it as provided with and affixed to a base a and ornamented by a suitable cap a; but it may be arranged without base and adapted to be placed or held upon thecountcr Serial No. 366,857. or to be hung upon a hook or other support, as preferred. In this piece A we form a transverse slot Z), extending lengthwise of the said piece and communicating with a right-angled slot or opening 0, as seen clearly in Fig. 1. o form two of these slots parallel with each other, and within the right-angled portions thereof we arrange the coils of the springclamp. There may be one clamp or more upon one side only of the piece A; orthe clamp may be arranged upon both sides thereof, as seen Figs. 2 and 3. These clamps are formed of wire, of suitable size ahd resiliency, bent into substantially the form of a U, as seen in Fig. 1, with their ends secured upon the face of the piece A by suitable means-such, for instance, as the staples cl-the convolutes or coils 0, being arranged in the slots 0, and the body portion of the wire extended through the slots Z), and having a bearing upon the piece or the bags upon the opposite face thereof, as seen more clearly in Fig. 3. The transverse portion of the clamp is preferably formed with a loop or eye f, by which it may be readily manipulated to insert a bunch of bags, as shown in Fig. The body portion of the clamp may be parallel with the supportingpiece A, or they maybe curved, as shown in Fig. 3, to provide greater space for the ends of the bags, as seen in Fig. 3. IVhen thus formed, the eye or loops f should be bent outward away from the supporting-piece, so that the finger may readily catch the loop or eye and the clamp will bear upon the bags at the point of the eye or loop at its junction with the main body of the clamp.

hen the device is used horizontally or when it is hung upon the wall, the clamps will be upon but one side of the picccAonly; but when arranged to stand upon the counter the clamps will be used upon both sides, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3, the clamps having their main portions crossing each other in the slots, as

seen in Fig. 0.

The manner of use will be readily understood from the above description when taken in connection with the drawings, especially Fig. 3. The bags B are doubled over at the ends, as seen in the said figure, the bearingpoint of the clamp being upon the body of the outer bag with the folded ends beneath the body portion of the clamp, so that the ends are practically unconfined or unrestrained, so that when the outer bag is Withdrawn it does not disturb the others, and as 5 the bags are removed the clamp automatically falls against the next remaining bag and holds the bunch in place. Of course the clamps maybe used to hold the bags fiat without their ends being doubled; but we Io have found that they can be more readily removed without disturbing the others by folding the ends of the bags, as shown.

It will be observed that by this construction the coils are confined within the limit of r 5 the supporting-piece out of the way and the device as a whole is simple and compact.

The eyes or loops f may be omitted, if desired.

\Vhat we claim as new is 2o 1. As an improved article of manufacture,

picco, its coils confined in the transverse slots, and its arms passed through the longitudinal slots to the opposite side of the support and adapted to clamp the bags against the face of the supporting-piece, substantially as described.

3. A bag-clamp consisting of a supportingpiece having longitudinal slots and transverse slots communicating therewith, and springwire clamps having their ends secured upon opposite sides of the supporting-piece with their coils located in thetransverse slots and their body portions passed through the 1ongitudinal slots and adapted to clamp the bags against the face of the supporting-piece opposite that to which the ends of the clamps are secured; substantially as described.

4. The combi'natiom'with the support having longitudinal and transverse slots, of the spring-wire clamps secured upon opposite sides of the support and having coils within the transverse slots with their body portions crossed in the longitudinal slots and extended to the side of the support opposite to that to which they are secured, substantially as specified.
