Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELLICOTT D. AVERELL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN oARD-RAoKs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 70,500, dated November 5, 1867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLrcoTT D. AVERELL, ofthe oity, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement on Gard, Bill-Head, or Paper Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference. being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents an elevation, and Fig. 2 a vertical section, of a round table or sta-nd having my improvement applied to it.
Like letters indicate like parts in both figures.
The nature of my invention consists, in combination, with a suitable frame, of a coiled Wire or spiral spring, in the interstices of which the cards, bills, or bill-heads, or other papers are placed, and within which they are held by the adjacent coils of the wire or spring.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents a round table or sta-nd, which may either be a table proper or a simple stand designed to be placed upon a desk, table, or shelf. In the periphery of the top to this table or stand is a groove, b, for receiving and holding or supporting a coiled-wire, B, preferably having its ends united, and made to form a spring fitting loosely into the groove b, to facilitate removal When required, or having its ends disunited and being otherwise, and, if desired, permanently secured or held. Furthermore, instead of a round stand or frame to the coiled Wire, the latter may be arranged in a straight line or plane, and be secured in any suitable manner to its stock or frame or other support so as to project from the same forinsertion between the instertices of the-coils of cards, billheads, or papers, as represented in Fig. 1. The arrangement, however, of the' coiled Wire on a curved surface is preferable for among other reasons, that the same has a tendency to open.
thepcoils at their outer or receiving edges to facilitate entry of the card, and to give a corresponding increase or grasp on their inner or opposite sides or edges.
A card, bill-head, or paper holder constructed of a coiled Wire or spring hung 011 or united to a suitable stock or frame, as described, so as to present its coils or interstices thereof to receive and hold within or between them the articles mentioned, forms not only a new and simple device for such purpose or purposes, but is cheap, not liable to get out of order, may be made as an edging to present an ornamental appearance, and secures, within a small space or compass, griping surfaces of so numerous a character as to invest it with more than ordinary utility.
What l claim as my invention, and desire to 'secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement, on a curved or circular surface of a stand or frame, of a coiled wire or spring, and forming, in combination with said stand or support, a card or paper holder, essentially as herein set forth.
