CARD HOLDER.
Patentd July 2, 1889.

uaM/HM/ ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN CLAYTON AND JACOB ABRAHAM, OF NEYV YORK, N. Y.
CARD-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,196, dated July 2, 1889.
/ Application filed February 21, 1889. Serial No. 300,651. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN CLAYTON and JACOB ABRAHAM, both of the city, .county, and State of New York, have invented anew and Improved Card-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved card-holder which is simple and durable in construction and specially designed to display cards having an inscription relating to prices, quality, or other matter over the articles, dry goods, clothing, &c.', in stores.
The invention consists of a vertically-adjustable rod, provided with a holder of special construction for supporting the cards.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front View of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, with parts in section. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional elevation of the holder; and Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of the same on the line as w of Fig. 8.
The improved card-holder is provided with a base A, on which is secured a tube or 1101- low post B, in which telescopes a rod 0, supporting on its upper end the holder D, carrying a card E, having an inscription relating to price, quality, or other particulars regarding the goods to be advertised in the store.
In the tube 13 is formed a longitudinal slot F, through which passes the threaded reduced end G of a screw G, said end screwing into the rod 0, as is plainly shown in Fig. 2. The enlarged shank G of the screw G screws against the tube B on each side of the slot F, so as to hold the rod 0 in any desired place in the tube B. The head of the screw G serves as a convenient handle for moving the rod 0 up and down when the screw G is slackened, and when the desired position of the rod has been reached the screw G is screwed up so as to bind against the tube 13, thereby holding the rod in place.
The holder D comprises a shell H, fitting over the upper end of the rod 0, and on the top end of the said shell II is secured a U- shaped band I, forming an aperture for the passage of a spring-wire J, having the shape of an inverted lyre, as plainly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The band I is preferably a part of the top of the shell H, and after the wire J is inserted through the aperture formed by the band I said wire is soldered in place on the shell 11. -The ends of the wire J are formed with a straight part K, adapted to fit closely against the shell H, so that a card passed -between the shell and the said straight part K is firmly clamped in place. From the part K extend outward the curved ends L, to permit an easy insertion of the card in the holder D, as before described.
The device is specially useful in stores on counters containing goods. The stand A-is placed on such a counter alongside the goods, so that the holder D is over the goods and displays on the card E the price or quality of the article directly below. As the rod 0 telescopes in the tube B, the holder D can be adjusted to any desired height to correspond to the height of the article placed on the counter. Thus it will be seen that a very convenient means is furnished for displaying cards over the goods.
As the shell H is loosely fitted on the upper end of the rod 0, it can be conveniently turned so as to display the card E in any desired direction over the goods.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a card-holder, the combination, with a vertically-adjustable rod, of a holder comand described.
