SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Fatent No. 623,027, dated April 11, 1899.

Be it known that I, AMERIOUS C. MILLS, J r. of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Displaying Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon. I

The object of mypresent invention is to provide a display-stand for attractively exhibiting goods or articles of merchandise in a convenient manner, whereby the goods may be removed or rearranged in part without disturbing the remainder; audit consists in further advantages and improvements in construction and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device; Fig. 2, a cross-sectional view through one of the supporting-blocks; Fig. 3, a plan view of one of the adjustingclips; Figs. 4 and 5, detail views of a modification in which the spring-clip is surrounded by a casing; Figs. 6 and 7, further views showing the upper and lower plates of the casing provided with apertures for receiving displaying-arms, and Fig. 8 a sectional view through the top of the support.

I have shown my device as adapted particularly for use in displaying canes or umbrellas or like articles, and in carrying out myinvention I provide a central support or rod 1, adapted to be suspended from the ceiling and provided upon its upper end with a swiveleye 2 and having arranged intermediate its length blocks or supports 3, provided with sockets or recesses 4, adapted to receive the ends of the umbrellas or canes to be exhibited, and to facilitate the inspection and handling of the same said sockets are bored at a slight angle to the central support, whereby the goods are held and ,extended away from the latter. To adapt separate devices for holding goods of various lengths and also for increasing the capacity of the stand, I arrange the blocks 3 loosely upon the support,

which passes through them, and hold each in any desired position of vertical adjustment by adjustable spring-clips 5, adapted to engage the support beneath the block and hold it, although permitting its free rotary adj ustment thereon. This clip is form ed from a single piece of spring metal bent into loops or doubled arms 6 6, formed with the sen1icircular portion 8 between them, said arms engaging the support 1 and the free operating ends'7 7. The free ends of the clip are turned out at a slight angle at the points 9, so that when they are pressed together the loops or arms 6 6 will be separated, loosening the clip and permitting its vertical adjustment on the standard or support to hold the block in the desired position. It will be noticed that when the clip 5 is opened for adjustment it can be removed from the central support by pulling the ends down or otherwise twistingit, thereby forcing the arms 6 apart, and to prevent their accidental removal in some instances I provide each with a casing consisting of the plates 10, arranged above and below the clip and having the apertures 11 for the passage of the support and;the inclosing plate 12, connecting them, said plate 12 being provided with an aperture at one side through which the ends 7 7 of the clip project. When the clips or springs are thus provided with the casing, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, they give a much neater appearance to the device and may also be utilized for other purposes and for displaying different varieties of goods by providing-a series of apertures 14 in the upper and lower plates 10, adapted to receive the engaging end of radially-extending arms or similar supports. A perforated extension 15, formed upon or attached to the sides or front of the casing, may also carry a transverse rod or support 16 for holding other goods. From this construction it will be readily seen that the several frames carried upon the central support can be rotated independently by the operator to' display the goods'to the best advantage and at the same time adjusted to various levels. The length of the support can be varied to accommodate arious heights of show-windows or store-ceilings, and for this reason I have shown a coupling 20, whereby the lower section may be removed. This construction is simple and cheap and besides permitting various adjustments to be had enables different styles or forms of supports for difierent classes of merchandise to be carried by the single standard.

I claim as my invention 1. In a display device, the combination with the supporting-standard, of the blocks having the apertures through which the standard passes, and the spring-clips having the free operating ends and frictionally engaging the rod beneath the blocks, whereby the blocks are capable of independent rotary adj ustment on the clips, and the latter may be readily adjusted vertically on the standard.

2. In a display device, the combination with the supporting-standard, of the. blocks encircling the standard and having the sockets or recesses in their upper sides for the reception of umbrella-sticks, of the spring-clips, each composed of a single piece of metal having the jaws engaging the standard below the blocks, and the operating free ends, said clips supporting the blocks andperrnitting their free, independent rotation.

3. Ina displaying device, the combination with the standard, having the swivel-hook at its upper end, and the blocks encircling the standard, having the sockets or recesses in their upper sides, of the spring-clips having the clamping-arms engaging thestandard and the outer free operating ends, said clips being clasped around the standard below and supporting the blocks and permitting the free rotary adjustment of the latter, substantially as described.
