Description
Oct. 26, 1965 c. A. JACK RECORD HOLDER Filed March 25, 1963 INVENTOR. CHARLES A. .14 OK BY 34 afi- 24:2
4 TTORNEKS' E 2 w A, I// a 9 f f a x /l 4 III! 4\ J n u a United States Patent 3,214,029 RECORD HOLDER Charles A. Jack, 4972 Pine, La Mesa, Calif. Filed Mar. 25, 1963, Ser. No. 267,451 2 Claims. (Cl. 211-40) The present invention relates to racks particularly adapted for racking disc-type phonograph records.
The rack of the present invention comprises a base, a turntable rotatably carried on the base. The turntable includes a platform for supporting vertically extending disc-type phonograph records. The turntable also includes an upright post which latter is surrounded by a ring-shaped coil spring, the coil spring being utilized for holding the plurality of disc-type phonograph records in up ended position.
In the preferred embodiment, the post is provided with a circumferential groove for receiving the inner portions of the coils of the ring-shaped spring. The outer porttions of the coils extend radially from the post. The coils of the spring extend substantially vertically. Too, the spring is so designed that when it is in position on the post, it is in an inward radial compressing state, so as to be in embracing relationship with the post. The upright coils of the spring are under tension axially thereof for impinging on the opposit sides of discs disposed between adjacent coils of the spring.
Other features and the advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated.
In the drawing:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the rack showing a record being held in position;
FIG. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the center of the rack; and
FIG. 3 is a top plan view of the rack showing a few records in position.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the rack 20 includes a circularly shaped base 22 having an upper, centrally disposed thrust bearing 24, and an upright and centrally disposed spindle 26. The rack also includes a turntable 28 having a lower thrust bearing 30 which rides upon thrust bearing 24. This bearing 30 is carried on the underside of a circularly shaped platform 32 of the turntable.
The upper surface of the platform is provided with a smooth concentric groove 34, shaped to complement the periphery of a selected size disc-type phonograph record, for example, a seven inch, ten inch or twelve inch record.
The turntable also includes an upright post 36, suitably attached to the top side of the platform. In the embodiment illustrated, the turnable and post are drilled at 38 for receiving the spindle 26, whereby the turntable is held in rotatable relationship with the base.
, The post is provided with a circumferential groove 40 for receiving a ring-shaped coil spring 42, the coils being shown at 44 for retaining records 46. The coils of the spring extending substantially vertically, and as previously set forth, the spring is so designed and proportioned so that when it is in position in the circumferential groove 40, it is in an inward radial compressing state, whereby it is frictionally and resiliently held in position in the 3,214,029 Patented Oct. 26, 1965 groove. The coils of the spring are under tension axially, and designed and proportioned so that the records which are disposed, respectively, between a pair of coils, has its opposite sides impinged upon to such a degree that the record is frictionally held in a substantially vertical position. Although frictionally so held, the records can be removed readily. Likewise, the records can be moved into retaining position readily.
From the foregoing, it is apparent that there has been provided an inexpensive, relatively simple, compact, and readily usable record retainer. The titles to the records can be placed radially on the platform on the areas lying radially of the groove or depression 34. Since the platform is rotatable, all titles can be found readily by merely observing the titles as the platform is rotated slowly.
While the form of embodiment herein shown and described, constitutes preferred form, it is to be understood that other forms may be adopted falling within the scope of the claims that follow.
I claim:
1. A rack for phonograph records, comprising:
(A) a platform having a smooth, circular groove in the top surface thereof, said groove complementing an edge of phonograph records when the records are in vertically extending position;
(B) a post extending upwardly from the platform and encircled by said groove;
(C) and a ring-shaped coil spring for maintaining the records in substantially vertical position while resting on the platform, said spring being directly carried by and surrounding said post, the coils of the spring extending vertically for receiving and impinging opposite side of record disposed therebetween and supporting said records in the groove by the platform.
2. A rack for phonograph records, comprising in combination:
(A) a base;
(B) a turntable rotatably carried by the base, said turntable including:
(1) a platform for supporting vertically extending disc-type phonograph records;
(2) a centrally disposed upright post;
(3) and a ring-shaped coil spring directly carried by and surrounding said post, the coils of said spring extending substantially vertical for impinging opposite sides of records disposed therebetween, characterized in that said platform is provided with a smooth, circular groove in the top surface thereof, said groove being concentric with the axis of the upright post.
