' COASTER AND TRAY Filed June 25, 1946 IN VEN TOR.
7 JOHN WCOZFZFJf/E ATTD R N EYS Patented Sept. 20, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COASTER AND TRAY John W. Colflesh, III, Burbank, Calif.
Application June 25, 1946, Serial No. 679,168
1 Claim. (01. (as-s1) 7 My present invention relates to an improved glass coaster and tray and more particularly to the structure of the coasters and the tray whereby the coaster may be supported on the tray in stabilized condition and the possibility of the coasters and the glasses contained therein of overturning is reduced to a minimum.
According to the structure of my invention, the coasters are supported on the tray in such a manner as to prevent the longitudinal or lateral sliding of the coasters when the tray is full, and the supporting means on the tray is located in the walls in such fashion that the coasters supported thereon are spaced from the bottom of the tray in order that food snacks such as hors doeuvres, may be carried on the tray under the coasters, and the person removing a glass and coaster will find the food readily available as the coaster is removed.
A further object of the invention is to provide coasters having guards into which the glasses may be thrust and held in upright position upon the coasters;
Another object of the invention is to so form the guards that lower ends of posts or standards forming portions of the guards will project downwardly from the coasters and facilitate holding the coasters on the arm of an upholstered chair or the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide the coasters with guards so formed that glasses may be readily removed but will not be liable to tilt and fall from the coasters.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a coaster of the improved construction.
Figure 2 is a topplan view of the coaster. Figure 3 is a view showing the coaster partially in side elevation and partially in vertical section. The coaster illustrated in Figures 1 through 3 consists briefly in a small circular tray or coaster l of a diameter adapting it to receive a glass 2 set therein and having a circular guard 3 surrounding the glass. The tray may be formed of metal, plastic, or other suitable material and is formed about its periphery with an outstanding circumferential flange 4 which fits into slits or grooves 5 leading from the upper ends of the recesses 6 formed in the lower ends of the inner faces of the posts or standards 1 of the coaster. Therefore the tray will be supported above the lower ends of the posts and since the posts are of triangular formation their lower ends will project radially outwardly from the tray or coaster a suflicient distance to prevent the coaster, its guard, and a glass resting therein, from turning over if the glass should be accidentally struck. Notches 8 areformednear the upper ends of the inner faces of the posts to receive portions 60 625,747
'2 of a ring 9 and support the ring with its inner surface flush with the faces of the posts so that a glass may be set in place and rest upon the coaster without striking edges of the ring when moved downwardly through the same.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
A coaster for glasses and the like comprising a tray having a bottom with side walls and an outwardly disposed peripheral flange around the upper edge of the side walls, a plurality of-radially disposed triangular-shaped posts with vertically positioned inner surfaces and provided with notches in the inner surfaces spaced from the lower ends thereof and also notches in the inner surfaces spaced from the upper ends thereof, said notches spaced from the lower ends having vertical and horizontally disposed sections for receiving the side walls and flange of the tray respectively, and adapted to hold the tray with the bottom thereof spaced from the lower ends of the posts, and a horizontally disposed circular band in vertical spaced relation to and concentric JOHN W. CO'LFLESH, III.
