:PAPER-FILE.
Speccaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 12,1913.
Application led IFebruary 21, 1912. Serial No. 679,024.
To all whom, may concern.'
Be it known that I, JAMES MAoDoNAnn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, Aand a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Paper-File,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The objectof the invention is to provide a new and improved paper file arranged to permit of conveniently placing bills, letters and other papers or documents in position on the le, or to allow removaloi' any vone of the papers from the file for reference or other purposes and without disturbing the remaining papers on the lile.
For the purpose mentioned use is made of a holder formed from a single piece of sheet material bent to provide a back and a front, the latter extending upwardly and outwardly from the lower end of the back to permit of placing papers between the front and back, the said front having a 'rearwardly and downwardly -extending spring tongue adapted to press ythe iiled papers against the said back.
A practical embodiment -oi' the invention is represented 'in the accompanying drawings orming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the paper file; Fig. 2 is a transverse section ot' t-he same; Fig. 3 is an enlarged face view of one of the holders ofthe paper tile, the dotted lines showing the manner of connecting one holder with another, and Fig. 4t is a cross section of the same.
The paper file, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, consists of a series of holders A, A, A2 arranged one below the other and detachably connected with each other, as hereinafter more fully explained. Each of the holders A, A, 2 is made from a single piece of sheet metal or other suitable material, bent to provide a back B and a front C, the latter extending from the lower end of the back B in an upward and forward direction so as to permit of placing bills, letters and ,other papers or documents in position between the front C and the back B.
The fro-nt C is provided with an integral struck-up tongue D extending rearwardly and downwardly to press the inserted papers or documents against the back B ot the corresponding holder so as to hold the papers or documents securely in position on the holder.
The several holders A, A, A2 may be fastened to a wall or other suitable support by the use of screws E or other fastening devices, but as the holder A is hung or suspended from the holder A and the holder A2 is hung or suspended from the `holder A, it is evident that only the upper holder A needs to be fastened to a suitable support by the fastening devices E.
The back B of each of the holders A, r and A2 is provided near its upper end and at the rear of the back B with a ticket holder F for supporting a ticket G containing the name of a person, lirm or corporation, the bills or other papers of which are tiled in the corresponding holder A, A or A2. The ticket holder F is preferably au integral part of the back B, and for this purpose an -L-shaped supporting member F is struck up from the back B in a rearward direction for supporting the ticket Gr, and lugs F2 are struck up from the back B on opposite sides of the lug F to form the sides of the holder F to limit the sidewise movement of the ticket G resting on the lug F.
The upper ends ofthe holders A, A2 are provided with slots H .extending across the back and adapted to be engaged by the lower or bent end of the holder next above so as `to support the ,holder from the one next above. It will be seen that by the arrangement .described a hinge connection is had between successive holders to suspend one holder from the next one above, thus permitting of forming the paper lile of any desired number of holders, one suspended from the next one above.
The lower portion of the front C slightly projects at the sides C so that the next lower holder cannot be slipped oft the front of the holder next above and only slipped over the back of such holder, and hence when the upper holder is fastened to a wall or other support the remaining holders cannot be surreptitiously removed by unauthorized persons.
The paper iile shown and described is very simple and durable in construction, can be cheaply manufactured, and the several holders can be readily assembled for holding papers pertaining to particular business transactions.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A paper file, comprising a series of holders suspended one from the other, each holder being formed of a single piece of sheet material bent to form a back and a front, the latter extending upwardly and outwardly from the lowei' end of the back and the said front havino` a struck-up tongue extending between the iront and back, the upper end of the said back having a slot for engagement by the bent end of the next preceding holder above to form a hinge connection between a holder and the one next above, the lower portion of the front projecting at the sides, to prevent a holder being slipped oli the front of the holder next above.
2. A paper ile comprising a series of holders suspended one from the other each holder being formed of a single piece of sheet material bent to form a back and a front, the upper end of the back of a holder having a slot extending across the holder adjacent to its upper edge and forming a bar at said edge for engagement by the bend at the junction of the front and back of the holder next above, the front of the last mentioned holder being wider than the length of the said slot to prevent a holder being slipped off the front of the holder next above.
3. A paper file comprising a plurality of holders suspended one from the other, each holder being formed of a single piece of sheet material bent to form a back and a front, the latter extending upwardly and outwardly from the lower end of the said back, and the said front having a spring tongue extendino` rearwardly and downwardly between the said front and back, the
upper holder having means whereby it may be Vfastened to a support, the suspended holders each having a slot extending across the holder adjacent its upper edge and forming a bar at said edge 'of the holder, the slot of one holder being adapted to pass over the back of the holder next above to cause the said bar to engage the bend at the junction of the front and back of said holder next above, the front of the holders at the lower portion being wider than the length of the said slots, to prevent a 'holder being slipped oif the front of the holder next above.
1l. A paper file comprising a holder adapted to be attached to a support, and a holder adapted to be suspended from the first mentioned holder, the holders each having a front and a back, the front extending upwardly and outwardly from the lower end of the back and having a tongue extending between the front and the back, the last mentioned holder having a transverse slot in its back near the upper edge and forming a bar at said edge, the back of the first mentioned holder being adapted to pass through the said slot, and the said bar being adapted to engage the first mentioned holder at the junction of its front and back to form a hinge connection between the holders, and means for preventing the suspended holder from being slipped off the front of the other holder.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES MACDONALD.
