S ection 1,Public Law esonugusrs ieie' Patent expires October 1,962 2 Claims. (e1. lee-tat.)
The present invention relates to an appliance for the upright. filing of index-cards, characterized. in that it comprises. an index-card. holder formed by a strip folded lengthwise in such a way as to form a sortofchannel intended to fit Tin a detachable manner onto. the upper-edge of. an index-card, this holder being provided at either end with a m 'ans for its. suspension-on two guide-rods, so'thalt the index-card'canbe suspendedbetween the two guide-rods and; be moved ina direction parallel-to. it by sliding the holder along these guide-rods.
The' annexed draw-ingshows, as an example, one embodiment of the appliance which isv the subject oftheinvention. Figure-lie in perspective; Figure '2' is a cross-section;- on. alarger scale. The appliance shown comprises an index-card holder I formed by a strip of transparent sub stance, which may be tinted if desired, folded lengthwise in such a way as to form a sort of channel in which the upper edge of an indexcard 3 is intended to be held. 7
The arm or part A of the holder which bears on the obverse side of the index-card 3 is closely parallel with the arm or part of this holder which bears on the reverse side of this indexcard. The part 4, however, is longer than the part 5, as can be seen in the drawing.
The distance separating the parts 4 and 5 is such thatthe index-card 3 is gripped between them when it is inserted into the channel 2, as shown in the drawing. If the holder is looked at from the end, or in cross-section as is the case in Figure 2, it will be seen that it is slightly bent at 6, so that its lip or upper part 1 forms an angle, of about 30 for example, with its lower part. The back part 5 of the holder extends approximately as far as thisbend.
The holder I is slightly longer than the indexcard 3. It is provided near either end with a notch 8 extending from its lower part to about halfway up its height. These notches 8 are intended to ride on two parallel guide-rods fitted in a drawer or cabinet not shown. These guiderods may be horizontal or slightly inclined, the rear end being slightly higher than the fore end, giving a slope of, for example, 6% in order to increase the visibility of the index-cards. The holder I may have two notches near either end, which would allow of moving certain cards sideways when they are needed to be more conspicuous than the others, the number of guide-rods still being two. 7
The index-card 3 bears, at the place coinciding with the bend-6 when it: is-fitted in the holder 1, a row of slits 9. whichare. intended to. facilitate, the foldingof the indexcard in the. interior of. the. channel? at; the bend of the. holder I.
The front part: 4 of, the. holder bears; three. small ton ues. 10 punched'outit. and projectin un- W rds inside the channel 2. These tongues It c nstitute. a means of; fixin the indexeeardt in the holder 1.. As an be. seen F ure ea h f heseton ues l0. penetrate one of the slit 9 a d. thusprevents. the index-card. fr m aeeidental y s h e ut of the' older All. hat. is needed topass the tongues. t through he it 9 to open out slightly thepe ts 4 and 5. wh ch is easy, as the substance efwhich the holder is made is slightly elastic. 5 This. substance is, for example, Celluloidora transparent plastic matter such as rhodoid, rhodialine, etc.
It will be noted that the slope backwards of the upperpart of the holder I and of the indexcard allows of the easy reading of the indications appearing on this part of the card.' The reading is, moreover, facilitated by the fact that a group of cards can be easily moved away from the others by sliding them along the guide-rods.
The holder l is provided with a series of slots H in the fold of the channel which are intended for the passage of the heads of flagging devices H2 in the form'of small plates, of which the body l3, less thick than the width of the slots ll, fits into the channel between the index-card and the part 5 ofthe holder. In the example shown, these flaggingdevices are T-shaped, the horizontal branch forming the body and the vertical branch the part serving as flag and projecting through one of the slots l I. So as to obviate any accidental movement of the flagging devices I: in relation to the holder l, these devices bear a rib l4 near the base of the flag projecting above the holder. This rib lies outside the channel when the device is in place, as can be seen in the drawing. The passage of this rib through the slot ll requires sufiicient eifort to obviate any accidental detachment of'the flag.
What I claim is:
1. An indexing device, for use in combination with and to be mounted for slidable movement upon a pair of spaced parallel guide rods, comprising a card member having a body portion terminating at its upper end in a lip bent at an angle of approximately thirty degrees (30) with respect to the said body portion and having formed therein along said bend line a plurality of spaced longer than the other, having a plurality of flagging device receiving slots formed in the fold line thereof encompassing said lip with the shorter of said. arms being parallel with and positioned along the rear face of said lip and the longer of said arms being positioned along the front face of said lip parallel therewith for the entire width of said lip and thereafter extending down said body member of said index card and parallel therewith; locking tongues formed in the longer of said arms, extending through said tongue receiving slits, and positioned between said lip and the shorter of said arms; said folded strip of transparent material having a pair of registering spaced guide rod engaging slots extending upwardly from the lower edges of each of said arms; and at least one flagging device having an indicating tongue and a retaining shoulder positioned between said strip and lip with said indicating tongue extending through one of said flagging device receiving slots.
2. An indexing device,"for use in combination with and to be mounted for slidable movement upon a pair of spaced parallel guiderods, comprising a card member having a body portion terminating at its upper end in a lip bent at an angle with respect to the said body portion and having formed therein along said bend line a plurality of spaced horizontal tongue receiving slits; a strip of transparent material folded to form first and second arms and having a plurality of flagging device receiving slots formed in thefold line thereof encompassing said lip with the first of the arms of said strip being parallel with and positioned along the rear face of said lip and the second of said arms being positioned along the front face of said lip parallel therewith for the entire width of said lip and thereafter extending down said body member of said index card and parallel therewith; locking tongues formed in the second of said arms, extending ,through said tongue ,receiving slots, and positioned between said lip and the first of said arms; said stripof transparent material having a pair of registering spaced guide rod engaging slots extending upwardly from the lower edges of each of said arms; and at least one flagging device having an indicating tongue and a retaining shoulder positioned between said strip and lip with said indicating tongue extending through one of said flagging device receiving slots.
