of metal with an upper'label-holding portion land a lower portion provided with an upwardly extending tongue or tongues adapted to fit between the fold and sheet of paper and a plurality of downwardly extending tongues adapted to fit behind the upper part of the sheet of paper. Such label holder is readily slipped laterally ona sheet of paper with said folded edge, and interlocks the label holder therewith against any vertical displacement, although it can'be moved laterally on the sheet of paper. Y I The label holder always rests onthe upper folded edge of the vertical filing sheet and said upper edge of the vertical filing sheet prevents the downward movement of the label '2 holder while the upwardly extending tongue between the filing sheet and its fold prevents the upward movement of the label holder independently of the sheet of paper. One feature of thexinvention consists in the Q 3 simplicity of the label holder as it is formed entirely of one sheet of metal, without fold-- ing any portion of the metal sheet upon itself. 15 and 16 extend downwardly on opposite sides of the upwardly'extending' tongue 17 and are spaced a greater distance from the back of the plate 12 than the tongue 17 It is understood, however, that there can be a plurality of the tongues 17, as shown in Fig. 12, if so desired.

Thespace between the inner Wall of th tongue 17 and back of wall 12 is preferably slightly less than the thicknessof the file sheet 18 to which it is to be attached so the tongue 17 will engage the file sheet fold 19 with some tension when in use. Also the spaces between the inner walls of the tongues 15,16and wall 12 are slightly less than the combined thickness of the file sheet 18 and its fold 19 so that these tongues will also engage the file sheet and fold with some tension when in use.

in use they engage the back side of the file sheet 18 and pinch. its told 19 up against the back side of the plate 12, and also the bases 20 of these tongues ride upon the folded edge 21 of the file sheet. The tongue 17 which is I associated and coacts with the

15 and 16 is preferably arranged between them and it extends upward between the file sheet 18 and its fold 19 and pinches'the latter against the back wall of the plate 12. The purpose of this tongue 17, in addition to properly holding the holder on the file sheet, is to prevent displacement ofthe holder in lines endwise of the file sheet. In other words the pointof the tongue .17 acts as a detent to prevent the holder from being 'moved endwise of the sheet. It extends up between the sheet and folded portion so that when the latter is lifted up the tongue engages the fold and'prevents displacement.

As previously stated, I may use one or more of the tongues 17 and also as many of the

tongues

15 and 16 as may be desired.

It is obvious that the label holder can be moved sidewise, the tension of the tongues being such as to permita relatively free 7 movement of the holder from side to side of the file sheet. s The rectangular bed plate 13 that is connected to the plate 12 by the curved plate 14,

- forms a. bed for-the label 22 and its-trans integral with the plate 13 is bent at rightangles to the latter to form a rest for the lower edges of the label and its cover; and on the opposite edge'of the plate 12 is a flange 24 extending upward and arranged at rightangles to the plate 13 and the height of the flange preferably slightly exceeds the combined thickness ofthe label 22 audits transparent cover 23; and upper edges of the label and cover snugly engage the inside wall of the flange. l

Adjacent the ends of the plate 12 are detents 25, 26 that are struck upward from the. plate 13 and they are arranged parallel with the plate so as to extend over and engage the ends of the label and cover and detachably hold them in place on the bed plate 13.

Preferably the label 22 and its transparent cover 23 are sufficiently resilient to permit them to be bent so their ends can be inserted under the free ends of the detents so that when released they will straighten out and be flat on the bed plateso they will be secure from accidental displacement. Itis obvious that the label and co-vercan beeasily removed for any purpose such as changing the data thereon.

Rectangular strips of suitable material may be used for the label 22, of a width which will permit them to lie in the recess. formed by the wall 114 and flange 24. The label 22 should be long enough for both ends to extend under the tongues'25, 26. A rectangular strip of thin transparent material "23 is useful as a cover with any desired kind of paper bearing the inscription; or, if desired,'a strip of cardboard alone, bearing the label, may be used with good results in this construction.

25, 26 at each end provides means whereby labeling material may be inserted quickly and easily and thereafter may not be accidentally displaced during manipulation of the file' The fingers of the operative willnot dislodge the labels; the labels may be intentionally removed and replaced with great facility. This construction also provides means whereby substantially the entire surface of the bed plate 13 may be occupied by visible lettering. 7

From the foregoing it can readily be seen that I provide a label holder that can be formed by a single stroke of a punch that immediately is in suitable form and condition for .deta'chably connecting it to a'vertical file sheet and which when'so connected is easily movable sidewise along thesheetbut which cannot be displaced endwise thereto.

In use the label holder is detachably connected to a file sheet by first moving theholder sidewise to the sheet so that the top portion of the sheet and its fold willexten'd under n or e other f t eton u s.l5r-l6aYit having an upper label-holding portion, and;

and the holder is moved further so that the 1 other tongue will extend over the back of the file sheet as previously stated, so that the holder can be freely moved from side to side of the file sheet but cannot be displaced endwise thereto. The label and its transparent cover are attached and detached as stated.

I claim as my invention:

1. A label-holder for a vertical file sheet with a portion along its upper edge that can be folded down, consisting of a sheet of metal having the lower portion provided with an integral upwardly to project between the fold and the sheet of paper, and a plurality of downwardly extending integral tongues adapted to rest upon the upper edge and fit behind the sheet of paper, whereby the label-holder cannot be removed vertically from the filing sheet and yet it can readily be moved transversely thereof.

2. A label-holder for a vertical file sheet with a portion along its upper edge that can be folded down, consisting of a sheet of metal integral means for holding the ends and edges of a label thereon, and a lower portion provided with an integral upwardly extending,

tongue adapted to project between'the fold and the sheet of paper, and a plurality of downwardly extending adapted to rest upon the upper edge and fit behind the sheet of paper,-whereby the labelholder'cannot be removed Vertically from the filing sheet and yet is can readily be moved transversely thereof.

3. In a label-holder for a vertical file the combination of a file sheet having a folded portion at its upper end, a label-holder having a plurality of downwardly extending tongues adapted to extend over the upper end portion of said file sheet so that they rest on the foldededge and extend over theback side of said file sheet and pinching ly engage the folded portion with the back side of said holder, and an upwardly extending tongue to said holder that is spaced a less distance'away from theback side of .said

5. In a label-holder for a vertical file the combination with a file sheet having a fold at its upper edge of a sheet-metal label-holder adapted to be detachably connected to the folded edge of said file sheet said holder including an inclined bed plate integral with the top edge of said holder, and bent at an angle toform a rest on the bottom edge of said plate for supporting a label, a flange at the topedge of said plate for engaging the top edge of the label, and detents adjacent the ends ofsaicl bed plate for engaging and detachably holding the label on said bed plate. 7

6. A label holder for a vertical file sheet having a folded portion at its upper end, consisting of a label-holding portion and a lower portion bent at an angle to each other, means on said lower portion for mounting said label having a folded portion at its upper end consisting of an upper label-holding portion and a lower portion for mounting said labelholder on said file sheet, the two portions being bent at an angle to each other, said lower portion having an upwardly extending tongue on the rear side adapted to project under the fold of the sheet and prevent vertical separation of the label-holder from the 4:.
