clear,.and-exact description of: the invention, such as wil l enable others-skilled in the art to 'w-hichi'it appei'tains to makeand .use the same:
;-The'-present= invention relates toplace holder for books, and has for its object to provide-a device offlthis' character which embodies novel features of construction whereby fit-.can be readily applied to an opened book without danger/of defacing or injuring the same, and. WlllgholdthjbOOlI in an open position with the pages spread out substantially fl'a't so thatthe printed matter thereon can be read without-zannoyance or difliculty. z
Further objects of .the2 inventi'onfare to provide a place holder for books which is comparatively simple' 'andinexpensivein its construction, which can be readily placed in position or removed therefrom, which can be easily manipulated to admit of the pages of the book being turned as desired, and which can be utilized for advertising puroses.
' With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a top plan view of the upper portion of an open book, the device being shown as applied to the book in-such a manner as to retain it in an open position.
Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of the device, one of the advertising cards being shown as partially withdrawn.

- lar portions of thewire body upon which the card receiving plates are mounted.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description; and indicated inall the views of the drawings by the same reference characters. I
- Specifically describing the present embodiment of the invention, the numeral 1 designates an elongated U-shaped wire body which is adapted to be inserted between the pages "2' ofwa book As, The two .sides of the U-shaped wireibodyhavethe upper ends thereof :ofl'set forwardly, as indicated at 3 andreturned laterally. in opposite directions at 4 in a plane substantially parallel to and spaced from that of 'the lower portion of the body; The lower ends of the returned portions '4; ofv the wire are extended laterally-at 5 in the plane of the returned portions, thereby providing substantially -L- shaped; arms or wings upon whichthe sheet.
metal plates Spare mounted; These plates 6 are substantially,v rectangular. in shape and.
have the lower sides and inner ends thereof rolled around the L-shap'ed wire arms, las
indicated at 7 the extreme'edges of these rolled portions of the plates being extended over the body of the plate and ofiset outwardly therefrom to provide retaining flanges 8 which cooperate with the returned upper edges 9 of the plates to receive cards 10 upon which any desired advertising matter may be printed. As indicated by Figs. 2 and 3, these cards 10 are readily removable by sliding them through the outer ends of the plates, and the cards of any merchant or business man could be readily inserted in position, thereby enabling the device to be used very advantageously for advertising purposes.
When using the device the U-shaped body portion 1 is inserted between the pages of the book and the laterally extending wings or plates 1 caused to fit over the upper edges f the pages of the book at the place where the book is opened. These lateral wings have a sufficient spread to extend appreciable distances on opposite sides of the back binding of the book at which the book is opened. The device thus serves to hold the book in an open and substantially flat position, so that the printed matter on the pages can be read without difiiculty or annoyance, even though the book may be new and have a stiff binding so that the pages have a tendency to spring together instead of remaining in an open position. In ioltdfir to turn a page of the book it is merely,,neces sary to slide the device upwardly until after the page is turned, the device-being, ,then moved backto its original position.
