UNITED STAT S PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS C. DE CARL, OF SAN J OSE, CALIFORNIA.
BOOK-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 7G7,139, dated August 9, 1904.
Application filed February 10, 1904. Serial No. 19Z,98`7. (No model.) l
To all whom it may (zone/37%.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS (J. DE CARLI, a citizen of the United States, rosiding at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State ot' California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Book-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device which is designed to support books in an upright position upon library-shelves where the shelves are not full.
It consists of a clevice litted to and slidable upon a track which is attached to the shel' in proper relation to the books, said device being mounted and projecting, so that it may be slidable lengthwise of the shel' and brought to such position that the projecting portion Will serve as a support for the books contiguous to it, so that in case of considerable vacant spaces the books would be prevented from falling.
It also comprises details of constructiong which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows the application of my de- Vce. Fig. 2 is a side View of same. Fig. Z is a rear View of Fig. 2. Fig. 3 shows device connected with wooden shelf. Fig. 4 is a side View of Fig. 3.
lt is the object of my invention to provide a device by which books may be supported upon library-shelves and prevented from 'alling down upon their sides when the shclves are not full of books which Will mutually support each other.
As shown in the accompanying drawings, A represents one of a series of shelves, which may be of any suitable form or Construction. When steel stacks are employed, the shelves are usually made of that material and curved at 'front and rear, as shown, and these curvatures serve to carry a label-holder and the y supporting device which is the object of my the device is provided with a tongue or with a curved segment, as at 4:. W'hen formed with the tongue, said tongue may be slidable in a grooved plate 5, which is adapted to be fixed to wooden shelves, so that when the tongue is in place within the guide it and the holder may be slid along longitudinally, the latter retaining its relative position to the shelvcs and the books carried thereon. When curved into the form of a segment, as shown in Fig. 2, and adapted for use in connection with steel stacks, the curved portion interlooks with the curved edge of the shelf, which serves as a longitudinal guide upon which the clevice is slidable. In this manner the holder may be moved to any desired point, and when the shelves are only partially filled with books or where some books may be temporarily removed these holders can be placed in such position as to preventthe books falling upon their sicles and becoming disarranged or damaged.
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a shelf having a guide along one side, ot' a plate having one end slidably litting said guide and an opposite portion extending nwardly toward the opposite side of shell? and terminating short of said last-named side.
2. The combination with a shelf having a guide along one edge, of a plate having a vertical member with a foot-piece to slidably fit said guide, said plate having its upper portion extending across the shelf but terminating short o' the opposite edge thereof.
3. The eombination with a shel' having a guide along one edge, of a plate having a vertical portion with a foot-piece slidably litting said guide, said plate having its upper portion extending across the shelf to a point near the center thereo't' and having its terminal made scroll-shaped.
In testimony whcreof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS O. DE CARLI. Witnesses:
JOHN PANoEnA, PE'JPER MINJOULET.
