SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,662,dated May 21, 1895.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DEAN A. BEOKWITH, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a. new and Improved Library- Stack, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.-

The invention relates to library furniture, and its object is to provide a new and improved library stack, which is comparatively simple and durable in construction, and arranged to permit of conveniently removing the shelves, or placing the same in proper position, without danger of accidental displacement of the shelves.

The invention consists principally of a shelf, provided at its sides with depending flanges adapted to drop into position between the supporting posts.

The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improvement with parts in section. verse section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the shelf-supporting device. Fig. 4 is an inverted plan view of one of the shelves, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the same.

The improved library stack is provided with a suitable casing A, having sets of front posts B and rear posts 0, supporting on their sides lugs D-and D, respectively, of which two corresponding lugs D, D on aligned front and rear posts are connected with each other by a connecting plate D projecting a suitable distance above the top of the lugs, as is plainly illustrated in the drawings. The lugs D and D, and connecting plate D form the supporting device for the shelves E, it being understood that two such devices are necessary for each shelf.

The shelves are preferably made of metal, but other suitable material may be employed, and each shelf is provided on the sides of its body portion with downwardly depending Fig. 2 is a trans.

flanges E, each having an extension E adapt ed to fit in between two corresponding lugs D, D of the supporting device, so that the ends of the flanges E rest on the lugs.

The ends of the extensions E are preferably beveled, as plainly indicated in Fig. 5, so as to permit of conveniently lifting the shelves to permit of an easy removal of the shelves whenever desired, it being understood, that it is necessary to lift the shelves to bring the extensions on top of the front lugs D, D, in order to remove the shelves.

From the. front end of each shelf E, depends a flange E connected with the forward ends of the side flanges E, and the rear end of each shelf is provided with a flange E likewise depending and serving togive strength to the shelf. Now when the shelf is in position, as shown in Fig. 1, then the front flange E completely covers up the supporting device of the shelves, and consequently, the front appearance of the library stack is greatly improved. Furthermore, the extensions of the side flanges, when in position between the sides of the lugs D, D, prevent accidental displacement of the shelves, and consequently the shelves are not liable to slip, but are securely held in the stack.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a library stack, the combination of a casing having front and rear posts with inwardly projecting lugs, a connecting plate extending between the front and rear posts at each side and secured to the ends of said lugs and being held away from the posts of the easing thereby and a shelf formed on its sides with depending flanges adapted to take over the connecting plates, each flange having a notch at each end to receive one of the said lugs, and having between said notches a depending extension adapted to drop between the lugs and hold the shelf in place, substantially as set forth.
