To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALooT J. E. LARsoN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oabinets, of which the following is a specifica- 'tion.
This invention is a sectional case, and while capable of general use is particularly designed for use as a filing case or cabinet of the type employing drawers for containing papers, documents and. the like.
Each case section is complete in itself and is therefore capable of use independent of other sections, while at the same time a plurality of sections may be assembled one upon the other so as to form a vertical stack or series of case units.
It is an important feature of the present invention to provide for the convenient assemblage of two or more units or sections, and to insure a rigid and effective interengagement of superimposed units or sections so as to prevent looseness and accidental separation thereof, without requiring the employment of extraneous fastenings, such as bolts, spring clips and the like. In this connection, it is designed to provide such a connection between the rear end portions of superimposed units as to prevent forward and downward tilting and subsequent separation of an upper section when a drawer substantially full of papers is pulled out to a considerable extent from said upper unit or section.
With these and other objects in View, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and particu larly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that' changes in the form, proportion,- size and minor details may be made, within the scope of the claims,
without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Referring at first more particularly to Fig. 4 of the drawings, it will be seen that aside from the drawer, the unit or section of the present invention is of skeleton form, and includes a pair of front uprights l, a pair of rear uprights 2, an upper front cross 'bar 3, an upper rear cross bar 4, a lower front cross bar 5, a lower rear crossbar 6, lower side bars 7, connecting the respective front and rear uprights, and a top plate 8' connecting the upper front and rear cross bars. The top plate is provided with o 0- site longitudinal depending flanges 9, wli extend for about one-half unit and are preferably integral with the top plate. At the crossings or intersections of the several parts of the frame, said parts are connected together by spot-welding, and no rivets, bolts or other fastenings are used in the construction. of the skeleton frame. The front uprights l and upper cross bar 3 are formed from a single metal strap or bar bent to produce the uprights and the cross bar. The lower end of each front upright extends below the bottom front cross bar to form a depending foot 10. The front half of the lower projecting end of each front upright 1 is notched or cut away as at 11 so as to reduce" the width of the foot, for a purpose as will be hereinafter explained. At the top of each front upright 1, there is a notch 12 intersecting the rear edge of the member and terminating about midway between the front and rear edges of said member. It will of course, be understood that there is a similar notch at each side of the section or unit, and the two notches 12, as-
well as the two notches 11, are formed in the strap or bar before it is bent. The top plate 8 andits flanges 9 lie inside of the skeleton frame, so that the seats formed by the notches 12 are on the outside of the unit.
Each 'rear upright 2 is extended below the section or unit so as to form a foot 13, the rear portion of which foot is provided with 10h the height of the a substantially V-shaped notch 14:, which produces a dove-tail shaped foot, or a foot which is wider from front to rear at its base than at its top, with the rear edge or wall of the foot inclining upwardly and forwardly. At the top of each rear upright 2, there is a notch 15- intersecting the front edge of the upright and having the shape and dimensions of the foot 13. The rear uprights 2 and the rear cross bar 4 are formed from a single strap of metal, as described, for the front uprights and front top cross bar.
The front lower cross bar 5 is a plain bar and is applied to the under sides of the lower side bars' 7, Which are angle bars; The lower rear cross bar 6 is an angle bar, with the side bars 7 fitting inside thereof so that the horizontal flanges or members of the side bars are smooth or free from projections, so as to form a guideway for the drawer 16 which may be of any suitable or preferred construction. However, the sides 17 of the drawer need not be the full height of the drawer, as it is sufficient that they merely overlap the side flanges 9 of the top plate 8, whereby a considerable amount of metal is saved in the construction of the drawer, as well as in the construction of the skeleton frame of the unit or section.
If desired, a suitable stop 18 may be provided upon the under side and at the frontv portion of the top plate 8, so as to limit the outward movement of the drawer. The drawer may be inserted into the skeleton frame by first tilting the same so as to pass its upper rear end inwardly beneath'the stop 18, and then brought down to a substantially horizontal position and pushed into the frame.
It will now be understood that each section or unit is complete in itself and may be used entirely independent of any other sec tion, the front'and rear feet 10 and 13 supporting the device in a slightly elevated position so as to obtain the advantages of the so-called sanitary furniture.
A second unit or section may be placed upon the top of a lower section, by placing the rear feet 13 astraddle of the rear portion of the top of the lower section with the upper section inclined upwardly, and thereafter swinging the upper section downwardly so as to bring the feet 13' into the V-shaped seats or notches 15 and the front feet 10 into the front seats or notches 12. When thus assembled, the feet of the upper section straddle the top of the lower section and prevent sidewise displacement of the sections. Furthermore, the feet of the upper section fit in the seats or recesses at the top of the lower section and prevent separation of the sections in a direction front and rear thereof. This interlocking of the sections is accomplished without extraneous fastenings, therefore the sections may be very con veniently assembled and taken apart without requiring the removal or the manipulation of any fastening devices, and therefore it does not require the employment of skilled labor for the assembling and taking down of a plurality of units or sections of the present invent1on.
It will here be noted that the joint beother objects, the upper section will be positively held against tilting forwardly and downwardly by reason of the fact that the dove-tailed rear feet 13 are overhung by or engage beneath the under out rear wall of therear notch or seat 14:.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A cabinet section or unit comprising a skeleton frame made up of uprights, cross bars and side bars, the front uprights and top front cross bar being bent from a single bar'having its ends projecting below the bottom of the frame and reduced in width to form feet, said bar being provided with a pair of notches intersecting its rear edge and disposed at the top of each side of the frame, shape and sizeof one of the lower feet, the rear uprights and rear top cross bar being bent from a single metal bar, the ends of the bar depending below the frame and each provided in its rear edge with a dove-tailed notch roducing a dove-tailed foot, and the bar being provided with a pair of notches intersecting its front edge and located at the tops of the sides ofthe frame andshaped to correspond to the dove-tailed feet.

5. A filing case consistin of a plurality of units each of Which inclu. es a framework comprising similar Vertically-disposed rectangular front and rear frames of strapiron, longitudinally extending angle-irons forming horizontal slide-Ways secured to the lower corner of such frames, and a flanged cover-plate secured to the upper portion of said frames, the metal of each frame being cut to form depending lugs flush With the sides of the frame, and the front and rear frames being cut away at their upper corners and in the rear and front edges respectively to form openings extending down their sides adapted to receive the lugs of a superposed unit.
