Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOHN A. YOUNG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BOOK CASE OR RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 657,847, dated September 11, 1900.
Application filed March 23,1900. Serial No. 9,952. (No models To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN A.YOUNG, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book Cases-or Racks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an indexing and separating attachment for book cases and racks.
The object of the present improvement is to provide a simple, durable, and convenient attachment for book cases and racks which is adapted upon the removal of a book to antomatically drop forward in place thereof to maintain the next adjacent books in separated and upright relation and at the same time indicate the index-numeral or other required indication of the removed book and which separator-pieces are adapted to swing back out of the way with the replacement of the book or books in the rack or case, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
The accompanying drawing, illustrative of the present invention, is a fragmentary sectional perspective view of a bookrack to which the present invention is applied.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the book-shelf, and 2 the separator-pieces of the present invention individual to the books behind which they are arranged, as indicated in the drawing. In my preferred construction, as illustrated in the drawing, each separator-piece 2 is formed with an elongated body portion and an angular outer end 3, that with the separator-piece in its active position will assume a vertical position in line with the front of the row of books upon the shelf and will be provided with a suitable numeral or legend to indicate the title, 850., of the removed book. Each separate piece is formed at its rear end with a pivot-eye for the passage of the pintle-pin 4, by which the separator-piece is pivoted in its individual pivot-bracket 5.
The series of pivot-brackets may be secured in any suitable manner to the shelf 1, preferably, however, to a continuous rail 6, secured to the rear edge of the shelf 1, as shown, with the pivot-brackets formed with saddleshaped extensions 7 to straddle said rail and be longitudinally adjustable thereon to suit the particular requirements that may arise.
8 indicates flanges or lips on the lower and rearward ends of the pivot-brackets 5 for engagement beneath a secondary rail 9, that locks the series of pivot-brackets in place against accidental disengagement.
10 is a pocket formed in the angular front extension or end 3 of the separator-pieces 2 for the reception of a memoranda-card in relation to the removed book.
WVhile the pivotal construction shown in the drawing is preferred on account of simplicity and convenience, the scope of the present invention isintended to cover, broadly, a series of individual separator-pieces movably connected to the book case or rack and adapted to move into the place of a removed book.
7 Having thus fully described my said invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A separator and index attachment for book racks or cases, comprising a series of pivoted and outwardly-swinging separatorpieces, adapted to move into the place of the removed books, the pivots of the separatorpieces being located in a position immediately adjacent to the rear end of the bookshelf upon which rest the books to be separated, substantially as set forth.
2. A separator and index attachment for book racks or cases comprising a series of pivoted and outwardly-swinging separatorpieces formed with an angular forward end, and adapted to move into the place of the re moved books, the pivots of the separatorpieces being located in a position immediately adjacent to the rear end of the bookshelf upon which rest the books to be separated, substantially as set forth.
3. A separator and index attachment for book racks or cases, comprising a series of pivoted and outwardly-swinging separatorpieces, provided with receiving-pockets at their front ends and adapted to move into the place of the removed books, the pivots of the separator-pieces being located in a position immediately adjacent to the rear end of tho book-shelf upon which rest the books to be separated, substantially as set forth.
4. A separator and index attachment for book racks or cases, comprising a series of pivoted and outwardly-swinging separatorpieces adapted to move into the place of the removed books, the pivots of the separatorpieces being located in a position immediately adjacent to the rear end of the bookshelf upon which rest the books to be separated, and an attaching-rail secured to the rear edge of the book-shelf, substantially as set forth.
5. A separator and index attachment for book racks or cases, comprising a series of pivoted and outwardly-swinging separatorpieces adapted to move into the place of the removed books, a series of pivot-brackets and an attaching-rail secured to the rear edge of the book-shelf, substantially as set forth.
6. A separator and index attachment for book racks or cases, comprising a series of pivoted and outwardly-swinging separatorpieces adapted to move into the place of the removed books, a series of saddle-shaped I pivot-brackets, and an attaching-rail secured to the rear edge of the book-shelf, substantially as set forth.
7. A separator and index attachment for book racks or cases, comprising a series of pivoted and outwardly-swinging separatorpieces adapted to move into the place of the removed books, a series of saddle-shaped pivot-brackets provided with flanges on their lower ends, an attaching-rail secured to the rear end of the book-shelf, and a secondary rail engaging the flanges of the brackets to secure the same in place, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me at Chicago, Illinois, this 17th day of March, 1900.
JOHN A. YOUNG.
