this specification.
- UNITED? STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK vv. SANGUINET, oF ST.- LOUIS', MISSOURI.
FlLE'FoR PACKAGES oF LETTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,230, dated February 3, 1880.
A Application filed May 26, 1.879. l
To atl whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. `SAN- GUINET, ofthe city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Files for Packages of Letters, Snc., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of My invention consists in a direction plate or piece for packages of let-ters, 850.", passing Y through the mail, and which is provided with a number of hooks placed in pa-irs,'with their points or end pointing toward each other, for the holding of elastic bands that serve to hold the letters in the package, and also to hold the direction-piece tlat down upon the top of the package. Y
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through one of the bands. Fig.
l 3 is a section showing a pair of hooks in sidev view, formed of one piece of wire; and Fig.
4 is a top view of a modification shown in Fig. 3. Y
A is the direction plate, board, or piece, upon which may be a paper or other label, B, with the destination ofthe packagel C printed or otherwise marked upon it. This board or piece A forms one face of the package orbunch of letters or papers. vIt may be made ,of Inill board, leather, wood, or any suitable material.
There may be any number of the bands DA D. Two transverse bands, D, and one longitudinal band, D', are shown. These bands are secured to the outer face of the direction-piece Y A by hooks or holders E F. The hooks or tion 0f the band between them. After insertion the band is spread out tlat upon the face of the direction-piece A, its edges being held by the two hooks E and F.
The hooks or holders are of any suitable.
bands as they are stretched .or contracted by the insertion or removal of the bunch ot' let ters or other papers.
I have shown the holders E and F with iiat heads, or formed of wire bent into suitable form for the described purpose; but I do not confine myself to any precise form or material. They are riveted fast to the piece-A, or attached in any other proper manner.
It will be seen that there is a space, e, be-
tween the two hooks of each pair E F, to allow theintroduction of the band D orD. Such provision is necessary because the elastic bands 4are liable to break after they have been used for a'time, and must be replaced by others.
In Fig. 1 is shown a pair of hooks, E F, formed of wire, and in Figs. 3 and 4 is shown amodification, in Which.the hooks E F are formed upon the ends of a single wire passed through the piece A in the form of a staple, the ends E F being lapped past each other over the band D, as shown. l
I claim as Iny'invention- The direction-clip herein described, consisting of the plate A, hooks or holders E F, ar-
ranged in pairs and projecting upwardly from the face of said plate, and having the projecting portionsl b turned toward each other, and the elastic band or bands D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
FREDERICK W. SANGUINET.
